A content delivery network (CDN) can serve cached content from distributed edge locations, while DDoS protection detects or filters malicious traffic at the network, transport, or application layer. Together, they can reduce the work that reaches a website’s origin and absorb or reject some attack traffic earlier in the delivery path. They improve resilience, but neither a CDN nor any single protection setting guarantees that a site will stay online through every attack or failure.
How do CDNs protect against DDoS attacks?
A CDN places a distributed delivery layer between visitors and a website’s origin server. When a visitor requests an object that the CDN has cached, an edge location can return it without fetching a fresh copy from the origin. That reduces repeated origin work and can leave the origin with more capacity for requests that genuinely need application processing. Amazon Web Services describes CloudFront as a globally distributed service for delivering data and applications; its documentation explains its delivery and caching model (Amazon CloudFront documentation).
This matters during an attack because a website’s origin is often a more limited resource than a provider’s distributed edge infrastructure. If many requests ask for the same cacheable images, scripts, stylesheets, or other objects, cache hits can prevent those requests from becoming equally many origin fetches. The CDN may also provide a point at which traffic can be inspected and mitigated before it reaches the application. Those benefits depend on the service, traffic pattern, and configuration; they are not an assurance that every request will be stopped or served from cache.
Protection is a chain, not a single feature: DNS directs visitors to an endpoint; the CDN or other edge service receives traffic; network and transport defenses address some infrastructure-level attacks; application controls assess HTTP requests; and the origin processes whatever valid requests still need it. A weakness or bypass in one part can undermine the rest. AWS describes CloudFront and Route 53 as components of an edge entry path and describes edge mitigation for those services (AWS Shield Standard overview).

What is the difference between a CDN and DDoS protection?
A CDN is principally a content-delivery and caching layer. It can improve delivery by serving cacheable content closer to users and reduce repeated work at the origin. DDoS protection is a set of detection and mitigation capabilities intended to identify or limit traffic that overwhelms infrastructure or application resources. A provider may combine CDN delivery and mitigation features in one service, but the terms describe different functions.
| Function | What it does | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| CDN delivery | Routes users to distributed edge infrastructure and can return cached objects without a new origin fetch. | It does not mean every request is cacheable, or that an application-layer attack will automatically be stopped. |
| Network and transport mitigation | Inspects or mitigates certain attacks against the network and transport layers before they consume origin resources. | It does not establish that every HTTP request flood or application failure is covered in the same way. |
| Application-layer controls | Evaluates requests to a web application and can allow, block, or monitor traffic according to configured rules. | It does not make poorly chosen rules harmless; configuration and monitoring still matter. |
The table describes roles, not a claim that every provider offers the same controls or coverage. When assessing a particular service, verify which layers it protects, where inspection happens, what is enabled by default, what requires configuration, and whether any feature is separately charged. The cited AWS materials describe specific AWS services, not a balanced comparison of all providers or their current prices.
How does caching reduce load on an origin server?
When a CDN has a usable cached copy of an object, it can answer a matching request from its edge cache rather than retrieving the object from the origin again. In simplified terms, a cache hit avoids that origin fetch; a cache miss, expired object, or request that must be processed dynamically may still require the origin. The share of requests served from cache is often described as the cache-hit ratio, but a high ratio for cacheable material does not mean the entire site can operate without its origin.

Static assets are commonly easier to cache than personalized pages or requests whose response depends on account state, a live database query, or submitted form data. The site owner has to decide which responses may be reused, for how long, and under what conditions. If cache behavior is too restrictive, repeated requests can continue to reach the origin. If it is too permissive, visitors might receive content that is stale or inappropriate for their session. Caching is therefore both a performance choice and a resilience choice, with correctness taking priority over maximizing cache hits.
AWS describes Origin Shield as an additional caching layer that can improve cache-hit ratio and reduce origin load (Use Amazon CloudFront Origin Shield). An additional cache layer can consolidate some requests before they reach an origin, but it does not eliminate origin dependencies for uncached or dynamic work. A site should plan for the requests its application must still serve, rather than treating a cache as a substitute for origin capacity.
Which DDoS attacks need different defenses?
Network- and transport-layer attacks
Some attacks target the network path or transport mechanisms, aiming to consume bandwidth, connection capacity, or other infrastructure resources. These are distinct from an attack that sends web requests the application must interpret. AWS Shield documentation describes protection for common network- and transport-layer threats, including protections AWS says are included for AWS customers through Shield Standard. AWS also says CloudFront and Route 53 mitigation systems inspect traffic at edge locations and mitigate attacks in real time (AWS Shield Standard overview). This is a description of those AWS services and scope, not a promise of protection against every threat or a claim of comprehensive application-layer defense.

Application-layer request floods
An HTTP flood can target the work required to handle apparently valid web requests. A request may pass basic network checks and still consume application, database, or compute resources. This is why a large edge network and a cache can help without being sufficient: requests for uncached or dynamic behavior may continue to exercise the application. AWS describes AWS WAF rules that can allow, block, or monitor requests and describes application-layer mitigation capabilities separately from Shield Standard’s common infrastructure-layer protections (Amazon CloudFront FAQs).
Application controls need to match the site’s real traffic. A rule that is too broad could block legitimate visitors; one that is too permissive may fail to limit abusive requests. Monitoring helps operators understand what rules are seeing before or while they change enforcement. The exact rule options and service behavior depend on the product and configuration, so consult the relevant service documentation rather than assuming a generic setting exists everywhere.
DNS and the route into the site
DNS tells a user’s device where to send traffic for a domain. It is part of the route into a CDN or other protected endpoint, but DNS configuration alone is not an application defense. If an origin remains reachable directly, an attacker may be able to target it without using the CDN’s cache or edge controls. A protected design therefore considers how traffic reaches the origin as well as how it enters at the edge. The AWS Shield overview discusses CloudFront and Route 53 in this edge-entry context.

Can a CDN keep my website online during a DDoS attack?
It can help, but no responsible answer is an unconditional yes. A CDN can serve cached objects while reducing repeated origin fetches, and a provider’s distributed infrastructure may inspect or mitigate some attack traffic before it reaches the application. The outcome depends on whether the relevant traffic is covered, whether requests can be served from cache, whether the origin is protected from direct bypass, how the application behaves under load, and whether the service is configured appropriately.
Availability also depends on more than attack filtering. Dynamic pages can rely on databases, authentication, APIs, or other services that remain bottlenecks even when static content is cached. An outage could arise from an application bug, an overloaded dependency, a routing or configuration error, or a failure outside the mitigation service’s scope. A CDN changes where some work happens; it does not remove the need to design and operate the rest of the system.
AWS reported that CloudFront automatically mitigated an HTTP/2 rapid reset event that peaked at over 155 million requests per second between August 28 and August 29, 2023 (How AWS protects customers from DDoS events). That is AWS’s account of one specific event and service response, not an independent benchmark, a typical attack size, or a guarantee that every CloudFront deployment—or every website—will receive the same outcome.

How to plan a CDN and DDoS protection setup
These steps are a vendor-neutral planning sequence, not a promise that a particular set of settings is available in every product. Use the service’s documentation to verify its exact controls and costs before enabling them.
- Map the delivery path. Record the domain’s DNS destination, edge or CDN endpoint, origin servers, and important dependencies such as APIs or databases. Identify any route that could let traffic bypass the intended edge layer.
- Classify what the site serves. Separate reusable static objects from personalized or dynamic responses. Decide which content can be cached safely, what invalidates it, and how long a cached copy may remain valid without serving incorrect information.
- Identify the resources that are easiest to exhaust. Consider bandwidth and connection capacity as well as expensive application operations, database queries, login flows, and API calls. Different resource targets call for different controls.
- Match controls to attack layers. Confirm what the provider handles at network and transport layers, then separately review application-layer request controls. Check which capabilities are included by default and which need explicit configuration or additional services.
- Reduce origin exposure. Review whether the origin accepts direct public traffic that bypasses the edge. Where supported, restrict origin access to the intended delivery path and test that ordinary application traffic still works.
- Test cache correctness and origin behavior. Verify representative pages and assets as both cached and uncached requests. Ensure personalized content is not shared incorrectly, and observe how much dynamic traffic still reaches the origin.
- Monitor and rehearse changes. Know where to review request and mitigation activity, who can change rules, and how to reverse a rule that affects legitimate users. Document escalation steps for an event instead of making high-impact changes without an owner.
- Revisit the design as the site changes. New endpoints, APIs, login flows, and content types can alter which requests are cacheable and which resources need protection. Recheck the traffic path and rules after material architecture changes.
What to check when choosing a service
A useful evaluation is about fit and operational scope, not just the label “CDN” or “DDoS protection.” Ask the provider or consult its current documentation for specific, answerable details:
- Layer coverage: Are network, transport, and application attacks addressed, and are those protections bundled together or separate?
- Mitigation location: Is traffic inspected at provider edge locations, regional infrastructure, or only after it reaches the origin?
- Cache behavior: Can the site’s static and dynamic content be handled safely, and what configuration determines whether a request reaches the origin?
- Origin protection: Can users or attackers connect directly to the origin and bypass the edge path?
- Operator workload: What must the site owner configure, monitor, tune, and respond to during an event?
- Scope and cost: Which protections are enabled by default, and which services or features are separately charged? Confirm current terms for the region and deployment rather than assuming one provider’s arrangement applies elsewhere.
The AWS example illustrates why the distinctions matter. AWS describes Shield Standard as included for AWS customers for common infrastructure-layer threats, while its materials discuss AWS WAF and application-layer controls separately. CloudFront provides the CDN role, and Route 53 can form part of the DNS entry path. These are complementary roles within AWS’s services, not interchangeable names for one universal protection feature. The precise scope remains subject to each service’s documentation and configuration.
