Cargo resupply missions use uncrewed spacecraft to carry a mixed load of food, crew supplies, station hardware and scientific investigations from Earth to the International Space Station (ISS). The launch vehicle sends the cargo spacecraft toward the station; the spacecraft then follows its own approach and attachment procedure. Some vehicles dock autonomously, while others are captured by the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm and berthed at a port.
After attachment, astronauts open the hatch, unload the manifest and begin using the delivered equipment or operating the new investigations. The final leg varies by vehicle and mission: a spacecraft such as Dragon can return research samples and hardware to Earth, while a mission such as Progress 91 was planned to leave with station trash for disposal. “Resupply” therefore describes the overall logistics mission, not one identical spacecraft design or one universal end-of-mission process.
What an ISS cargo resupply mission carries
Every flight has a mission-specific manifest. NASA describes commercial resupply as a way to sustain research aboard the ISS, so a single spacecraft can carry ordinary crew provisions alongside experiments and the equipment needed to support station operations.

- Station hardware: replacement equipment, maintenance items and hardware for the station’s systems.
- Scientific investigations: research payloads that astronauts will operate or monitor in orbit.
- Experiment support: the hardware or materials required to make a particular investigation usable after delivery.
The contents are not the same on every flight. A reported cargo weight is also not automatically a spacecraft capacity. For example, NASA described nearly 6,500 pounds delivered by a Dragon mission on May 17, 2026; that is the amount carried on that flight, not a standard Dragon payload rating. NASA’s CRS-24 overview expected about 11,000 pounds of science and supplies on that specific Cygnus XL mission, while the March 2025 Progress 91 report described about three tons of food, fuel and supplies. Each figure belongs to its named mission and date.

How supplies and experiments travel from Earth to the station
1. A mixed manifest is prepared for one flight
Before launch, the mission combines the items assigned to that flight: consumables, replacement hardware, research investigations and related equipment. The available sources establish that these categories travel together, but they do not define one standard selection, packing or environmental-protection process for every experiment. Those details depend on the individual payload and require payload-specific documentation.
2. The launch vehicle sends the cargo spacecraft into orbit
The rocket and the cargo spacecraft are separate parts of the delivery system. In NASA’s May 2026 Dragon example, a Falcon 9 launched the spacecraft, and Dragon docked with the ISS two days later. The rocket’s job is to place the uncrewed vehicle on its way; Dragon then performs the subsequent approach and station-attachment operations.
3. The spacecraft approaches the ISS using its own flight procedure
Once in the vicinity of the station, the cargo vehicle follows a vehicle-specific rendezvous and attachment plan. There is no single arrival method shared by the entire cargo fleet. Dragon’s cited May 2026 flight docked autonomously with the Harmony module. For the CRS-24 Cygnus XL mission, NASA described astronauts using Canadarm2 to grapple the spacecraft and then robotically install it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. Progress 91 docked at the aft port of the Zvezda module in March 2025.
4. The crew opens the hatch and unloads the delivery
After the spacecraft is secured, station crew members open the hatch and move the manifest into the ISS. NASA’s account of the May 2026 Dragon arrival says the crew unloaded supplies and began new experiments. This is the point at which a delivered investigation becomes an operating station activity: the spacecraft transports the payload, while the astronauts and station facilities make the research work possible.

5. Research begins aboard the ISS
Experiments remain on the station for the period specified by their individual plans. Crew members may install, activate, observe or maintain the investigation, but the exact sequence is payload-specific. The cited material confirms that new experiments began after the Dragon cargo was unloaded; it does not establish one universal activation procedure for all ISS research.
How cargo spacecraft attach to the ISS
Autonomous docking
In autonomous docking, the cargo spacecraft conducts the final approach and connects to a compatible station port without astronauts physically grappling it with Canadarm2. The May 2026 Dragon mission is the documented example: Dragon autonomously docked with Harmony. “Autonomous” describes that attachment method; it does not mean the vehicle carries no mission oversight or that every Dragon flight uses an identical timeline.
Canadarm2 capture and robotic berthing
Some vehicles are captured by Canadarm2, the station’s robotic arm, rather than docking directly under their own control. NASA’s CRS-24 overview says astronauts used Canadarm2 to grapple Cygnus XL and robotically berth it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. Capture and berthing are therefore distinct from autonomous docking: the arm handles the physical positioning and installation after the crew captures the arriving spacecraft.

Direct docking at a station port
Progress 91 provides another docking example. NASA reported that it docked at Zvezda’s aft port in March 2025. The example shows why a useful mission description should name both the spacecraft and the station interface instead of treating every arrival as if it used Harmony or Unity.

How experiments are sent to the ISS
An experiment reaches orbit as part of the cargo spacecraft’s mixed manifest. The launch vehicle carries the spacecraft, and the spacecraft carries the investigation to the station. Once the vehicle is attached, astronauts transfer the payload through the hatch and begin the work described by the investigation’s operating plan.
This arrangement separates transportation from research operations. The cargo vehicle is a delivery platform; it does not by itself conduct every experiment. Station crew members, station power and other facilities are involved after arrival. NASA’s May 2026 Dragon report specifically describes the crew unloading supplies and beginning new experiments, illustrating that transition from delivery to operations.
There is no single publicly established packing recipe that applies to every ISS investigation. Requirements such as experiment selection, packaging, environmental controls and payload integration vary with the payload. A reader looking for those details should use the documentation for the particular investigation rather than assume that one cargo-vehicle procedure covers all research.
What happens to cargo after it arrives?
Supplies and equipment are used on the station
Food and other consumables enter the station’s stores. Hardware is moved to the location where it is needed, and research equipment is installed or otherwise prepared for its planned operation. The crew’s unloading work is therefore an essential part of delivery, not a separate optional step.

Some cargo returns to Earth
Return capability depends on the vehicle and the mission. NASA reported that Dragon returned research samples and hardware after its June 2026 departure. This makes Dragon an example of a cargo spacecraft that can support a round trip for selected research and equipment. It does not establish that every cargo vehicle can return experiments or that every Dragon flight carries return cargo.
Some spacecraft leave with trash for disposal
NASA’s Progress 91 report said the spacecraft was expected to stay docked for approximately six months and then re-enter with trash loaded by the crew. In that mission, disposal was the planned outbound function. It should not be generalized to every resupply vehicle: a spacecraft’s ability to return useful cargo, carry waste or perform both roles is vehicle- and mission-specific.

Dragon: autonomous arrival and research return
The May 2026 Dragon flight demonstrates a complete delivery sequence. Falcon 9 launched the cargo spacecraft, Dragon reached the station two days later and autonomously docked at Harmony. The reported delivery was nearly 6,500 pounds. After the crew opened the hatch and unloaded the manifest, new experiments began. NASA later reported that Dragon departed in June 2026 carrying research samples and hardware back toward Earth.

The CRS-24 overview illustrates a different interface. NASA expected about 11,000 pounds of science and supplies on that Cygnus XL mission. Instead of autonomous docking in the cited description, astronauts grappled the spacecraft with Canadarm2 and robotically installed it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. The named port and capture method matter because they explain how the spacecraft became part of the station’s attached cargo configuration.

Progress 91: docking and planned disposal
Progress 91 shows a third combination of choices. NASA reported about three tons of food, fuel and supplies, and said the vehicle docked at Zvezda’s aft port in March 2025. The plan called for approximately six months attached to the station, followed by re-entry with trash loaded by the crew. Its example emphasizes that a resupply flight can end as a controlled disposal mission rather than a return of research samples.
How to compare an ISS cargo mission accurately
A meaningful comparison uses the same questions for each flight:
- What was aboard? Separate routine provisions, hardware and investigations, and identify whether a weight is a mission load or a vehicle specification.
- How did it arrive? Record autonomous docking, direct docking or Canadarm2 capture and berthing.
- Where did it attach? Name the station module and port, such as Harmony, Unity’s Earth-facing port or Zvezda’s aft port.
- How long was it expected to remain? Use the mission’s stated duration when available; do not infer a standard stay from another vehicle.
- What happened afterward? Distinguish return of research and hardware from re-entry with crew-loaded trash, and mark the outcome as mission-specific.
These criteria reveal differences without pretending that the cited examples form a complete ranking of all international and commercial cargo vehicles. They also prevent a common mistake: turning one flight’s cargo number or end-of-mission plan into a universal fleet statistic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the delivery process means for ISS research
Resupply flights make orbital research practical by connecting Earth-based logistics with the station’s crew and facilities. The same spacecraft can carry ordinary provisions needed to keep astronauts working and investigations that require an orbital laboratory. After arrival, astronauts physically transfer the payload and start the experiments; after the investigation is complete, the responsible cargo vehicle may return samples and hardware or may be loaded with waste for disposal, depending on its design and mission plan.
NASA’s acting Administrator Sean Duffy summarized the broader purpose on August 24, 2025: “Commercial resupply missions to the International Space Station deliver science that helps prove technologies for Artemis lunar missions and beyond.” The operational details behind that statement are concrete: a mixed manifest launches, a vehicle-specific attachment method secures the spacecraft, the crew unloads it, and the station turns delivered hardware and materials into active research.
