A capacitive touch sensor detects how a finger changes an electric field—and the resulting change in capacitance. The finger does not need to conduct through the glass or plastic cover: conductive electrodes sit beneath that insulating layer, and a touch controller measures the electrical change caused by the finger’s presence.

How a capacitive touch sensor detects contact

An electrode and the conductors around it have capacitance even when no one is touching the sensor. The electrode creates an electric field; when a finger comes near, it alters that field and changes the capacitance the controller measures. The glass or plastic cover is a dielectric: it insulates the finger from the electrode while still allowing the electric field to couple through it.

The controller repeatedly samples the sensor, compares the reading with an untouched baseline or configured threshold, and reports a touch when the change is large enough. A button may have one sensing electrode and produce a simple detected/not-detected result. A touchscreen repeats the measurement across an array of sensing locations so it can estimate where the finger is.

Self-capacitance and mutual capacitance

The two common approaches differ in what the controller measures. Self-capacitance measures one electrode relative to ground; mutual capacitance measures the coupling between transmit and receive electrodes.

Feature Self-capacitance Mutual capacitance
Electrodes measured One sensing electrode relative to circuit or earth ground A transmit (Tx) electrode and a receive (Rx) electrode
How the controller measures It charges the sensing electrode to a known potential and measures the resulting charge. It drives pulses on Tx and measures the coupling, or transferred charge, at Rx.
Typical touch effect A finger generally increases the electrode’s apparent capacitance. Texas Instruments’ CapTIvate Technology Guide 1.50.00.00 gives 1–10 pF as a typical added touch capacitance; actual values depend on the sensor. A finger disturbs the field between Tx and Rx. The coupling often decreases, but the direction and size of the measured change depend on the circuit and measurement convention. The same TI guide gives less than 1 pF as a typical touch-related change.
Field and layout The field extends around the electrode and can interact with nearby structures or keys. The field is more tightly associated with the Tx–Rx interaction. Distinct intersections can form a dense sensing matrix.
Touch location Electrodes can identify which sensor responds; the arrangement determines the available location information. Separately measured Tx/Rx intersections form sensing nodes that can support touch localization and multi-touch.

These capacitance figures are typical values in a vendor guide, not universal specifications. Sensor geometry and implementation affect the actual change. Microchip summarizes the electrode arrangement this way: “The mutual-capacitance method uses a pair of sensing electrodes (X-Y lines).” (Microchip Developer Help)

How the controller turns a change into a touch location

1. Acquire a reading

The controller repeatedly measures the sensor signal. It uses an untouched baseline or another configured reference to interpret the reading.

  • 【EASY INTEGRATION】Compact size with clear pinouts (VCC, GND, I/O) and low power consumption for DIY applications.

2. Compare the change with a threshold

The controller evaluates how far the current measurement has moved from the reference. If that delta crosses the configured touch threshold, it reports a touch. The threshold is part of the sensor’s design and calibration; there is no single fixed capacitance that makes every sensor register contact.

3. Identify the responding sensor or node

For a button, the result may simply be on or off. In a mutual-capacitance touchscreen, the controller scans Tx and Rx electrodes and evaluates their intersections as separate sensing nodes. The pattern of responding nodes helps it estimate touch position; a matrix can also support multi-touch.

Why glass thickness, layout, and calibration matter

A capacitive sensor can work through an insulating cover, but the cover and the surrounding circuit affect how clearly the controller can distinguish a touch.

  • Cover material and thickness: A thicker overlay increases the separation between finger and electrode and diffuses the field, reducing the touch-related capacitance change. Electrode geometry must suit the cover.
  • Electrode shape and spacing: Layout changes both the electric field and the sensor’s baseline capacitance. A design that improves sensitivity may make noise, water rejection, power use, or response latency harder to manage.
  • Parasitic capacitance and nearby ground: Unwanted capacitance can make the touch-related change a smaller fraction of the total measurement. Nearby ground can also draw field lines away from the touch surface.
  • Measurement method and panel layout: Self-capacitance has a broader field and can interact with neighboring structures. Mutual-capacitance changes may be smaller, but distinct Tx/Rx nodes support dense matrices.
  • Threshold and calibration: The controller’s reference and touch threshold determine how large a measured change must be to count as a touch.

These are connected design choices rather than independent settings. Microchip’s Capacitive Touch Sensor Design Guide (AN2934) discusses electrode layout, thresholds, shielding, and touch covers; Texas Instruments’ CapTIvate Technology Guide explains field behavior and parasitic capacitance.
