Cannibalism and scavenging describe different features of feeding. Cannibalism means an animal ate another member of its own species (or, in some discussions, its own kind). Scavenging means it fed on a carcass that was already dead. Because one term identifies who was eaten and the other describes when and how the food became available, the categories can overlap: a prehistoric predator could scavenge a dead member of its own species and therefore be both a scavenger and a cannibal.
Fossils usually show that feeding occurred more clearly than they show who caused the death. Tooth marks, punctures and bone damage must be interpreted with the position and shape of the marks, the condition and arrangement of the remains, transport, weathering and burial history. That is why a conspecific bite mark is evidence of cannibalistic feeding, but not automatically evidence that the feeder killed its victim.
The two terms answer different questions
What cannibalism identifies
Cannibalism is defined by the relationship between eater and food. If a theropod consumes another individual of the same species, the feeding is cannibalistic whether the carcass resulted from hunting, disease, an accident, territorial conflict or another cause. “Conspecific” is the technical word for an animal belonging to the same species.

What scavenging identifies
Scavenging concerns the condition of the food. A scavenger feeds on an animal that was already dead, or on a carcass whose death it did not cause. Scavenging can involve an active hunter taking over a carcass, an opportunistic animal finding a corpse, or several animals returning to the remains at different times.

Why the categories overlap
Imagine a dead Edmontosaurus being opened by a crocodile-like reptile. If another Edmontosaurus later ate the remains, that second animal would be both a scavenger and a cannibal. Conversely, a carnivore could kill a different species and consume it: that would be predation, not cannibalism, even if the carcass was later scavenged by others.
What fossil evidence can—and cannot—show
Teeth can leave punctures, scores, furrows, pits and striations. These marks demonstrate contact between a feeding animal and a bone or, in rare cases, preserved soft tissue. They can reveal the type of interaction more reliably than they reveal its timing. A mark on a conspecific bone supports the conclusion that an animal fed on its own kind; it does not by itself establish that the marked individual was attacked and killed by the feeder.
Researchers therefore compare several observations rather than relying on one dramatic mark:

- Mark morphology: punctures, grooves and scratches can be compared with the tooth shape and size of candidate predators.
- Placement: marks concentrated around muscle attachments, joints or areas that provide access to organs can indicate how a carcass was opened.
- Distribution: repeated marks on many elements may indicate prolonged feeding, while isolated damage can have other explanations.
- Bone condition: fresh bone, weathered bone and brittle, transported bone respond differently to tooth pressure.
- Association and articulation: an articulated skeleton, a partly dismembered carcass and a river-transported bonebed record different sequences of events.
- Alternative processes: trampling, sediment abrasion, cracking, weathering and post-burial chemical changes can mimic or modify feeding traces.
Even a close match between a mark and a predator’s tooth does not prove that the predator made the original kill. The strongest conclusions combine trace-maker identification with the geological and biological history of the deposit.

Taphonomy: the sequence behind a fossil
The U.S. National Park Service defines taphonomy as what happens to remains between death and fossilization. A carcass can decay, be carried by water or wind, be scavenged, weather at the surface, become brittle and then be altered physically or chemically after burial. Each stage can add, erase or distort evidence.
For example, tooth-marked bones in a river-transported bonebed at Dinosaur National Monument support scavenging, but the transport history matters. Water may have moved bones away from the original carcass and mixed remains from different animals. A mark found on a displaced bone is still evidence of feeding contact, but it is weaker evidence for the exact location, timing or identity of the death event.
This is why “a bite mark” is not a complete behavioral story. The practical question is not simply whether teeth touched bone, but what sequence of death, carcass access, transport, weathering and burial best explains all of the observations together.

| Majungatholus atopus, Madagascar | Conspecific bones were among the consumed remains; sauropod bones were also involved. | Tooth-marked dinosaur bones from three well-documented Upper Cretaceous Maevarano Formation localities. | Cannibalistic feeding by Majungatholus. | The marks do not prove that the marked animals were killed by the feeder rather than scavenged. |
| Mygatt-Moore Quarry, Colorado | Theropod marks occur on vertebrate fossils; the surveyed sample includes potential conspecific interactions. | Upper Jurassic assemblage; 684 of 2,368 surveyed vertebrate fossils (28.885%) had at least one theropod bite mark. Marks included punctures, scores, furrows, pits and striations. | Very frequent feeding traces and an ecosystem in which scavenging, feeding and possible cannibalism were important interpretations. | 28.885% is a proportion of surveyed fossils with marks, not a rate at which prehistoric animals scavenged or cannibalized. |
| Dakota, a mummified Edmontosaurus, North Dakota | The proposed feeder was a crocodyliform, possibly Brachychampsa montana, not a conspecific. | Unhealed bite and puncture marks occur on preserved skin and bones of a Late Cretaceous mummy. | Carcass opening during or after death; scavenging is the leading interpretation in the account. | The trace-maker and the exact preservation pathway remain proposed interpretations; marks on the tail are less securely assigned. |
Majungatholus: clear evidence for cannibalistic feeding
Rogers, Krause and Curry Rogers reported tooth-marked dinosaur bones from three localities in Madagascar’s Upper Cretaceous Maevarano Formation. Their 2003 Nature paper concluded that Majungatholus atopus fed on sauropods and on members of its own kind. That is direct evidence for cannibalistic feeding in this particular dinosaur: the food included conspecific bones and the marks were consistent with the animal’s teeth.

The conclusion is narrower than “Majungatholus routinely hunted its own species.” The fossils establish consumption, not the complete cause-of-death sequence. A carcass could have been killed by the feeder, killed by another animal, or found after dying from injury, illness or starvation. The cannibalism label answers the species-identity question; it does not settle the predation-versus-scavenging question.
The case is published as “Cannibalism in the Madagascan dinosaur Majungatholus atopus”. A separate 2007 Proceedings of the Royal Society B paper examines prey choice and reported cannibalistic behavior in Coelophysis; its subject likewise illustrates why behavioral claims must remain tied to a named taxon and its specific specimens rather than generalized to all theropods (paper text).
Mygatt-Moore Quarry: many bite marks, cautious behavioral claims
Drumheller and colleagues surveyed 2,368 vertebrate fossils from the Upper Jurassic Mygatt-Moore Quarry in Colorado. They found that 684 specimens had at least one theropod bite mark: 28.885% of the surveyed fossils. The marks included punctures, scores, furrows, pits and striations. Their 2020 PLOS ONE article describes this as unusually frequent compared with other dinosaur-dominated assemblages and discusses feeding, scavenging and possible cannibalism in a stressed ecosystem (full article).

The authors emphasize that bite marks document trophic interaction, while separating predation from scavenging is difficult in many assemblages. Mark placement, size comparisons between marks and candidate teeth, and which prey elements are present all contribute to the interpretation. Direct fossil evidence for scavenging by large carnivores, including cannibalism, remains uncommon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dakota: scavenging recorded in skin as well as bone
Natural History Museum reporting describes unhealed bite and puncture marks on the skin and bones of Dakota, a Late Cretaceous Edmontosaurus mummy discovered in North Dakota. Researchers proposed that a crocodyliform, possibly Brachychampsa montana, tore open the carcass to reach flesh. The marks indicate activity during or after death, making carcass feeding more plausible than an attack recorded in living tissue, but the exact trace-maker is not certain. Marks on the tail are less securely assigned.
The proposed preservation sequence is unusually informative: a scavenger opened the carcass, the remaining durable skin dried, and that skin later fossilized. Dr Clint Boyd summarized the significance this way: “Not only has Dakota [the dinosaur mummy] taught us that durable soft tissues like skin can be preserved on partially scavenged carcasses, but these soft tissues can also provide a unique source of information about the other animals that interacted with a carcass after death.” The account and its qualifications are available from the Natural History Museum.
Dakota is not a cannibalism case because the proposed feeder and the consumed dinosaur were different kinds of animals. It is a useful scavenging example because both skin and bone preserve evidence of access to a carcass, while the evidence still stops short of proving every detail of the interaction.

How scientists distinguish feeding after death from an attack during life
Signs that favor carcass feeding
- Marks occur on exposed, meat-rich areas or on several bones in a partly disarticulated carcass.
- The marks lack signs that the prey survived long enough for healing.
- There is evidence of weathering, drying or transport before burial, consistent with a carcass being available over time.
- The marks match the teeth of a likely scavenger and occur in a pattern expected from opening a corpse.
Why those signs are not absolute
“No healing” usually means the bone did not show a biological response before death; it does not, by itself, reveal whether the animal died before the bite, died during the attack or was already incapacitated. Weathering can happen before or after feeding, and transport can move bones away from the original carcass. Researchers must combine all observations rather than treat one criterion as decisive.
Human archaeological criteria are related but not interchangeable
The Australian Museum’s discussion of the question “Was cannibalism practiced?” concerns human archaeological remains, a related but distinct subject. It recommends checking whether damage came from animal teeth or tools, determining whether bone was fresh when modified, comparing treatment of human and animal remains, examining marrow extraction and breakage, and considering alternatives such as ritual defleshing or secondary burial (Australian Museum overview).
Those criteria cannot simply be transferred to dinosaur tooth-mark claims. A dinosaur assemblage requires taxon-specific tooth comparisons, geological context and an understanding of how fossilization altered the remains. The shared principle is to test competing explanations; the diagnostic details differ between human archaeology and vertebrate paleontology.
A practical evidence rule for reading claims
- Identify the eater and the food. Ask whether they are conspecific, different species or impossible to determine.
- Describe the trace. Record the mark’s shape, dimensions, location and distribution instead of calling every groove a bite.
- Reconstruct carcass history. Check articulation, weathering, transport, decomposition and burial setting.
- Separate conclusions. “Fed on this animal,” “scavenged a carcass” and “killed this animal” are progressively stronger claims and require progressively stronger evidence.
- Keep the claim local. A well-supported case in one quarry or species does not establish a universal behavior rate for prehistoric animals.
The most defensible plain-language conclusion is therefore: fossils can show that an animal fed on another animal, and sometimes that the food was its own species. Establishing that the feeder killed the victim rather than scavenged it requires the entire taphonomic context, not a tooth mark alone.
