To disable Developer Mode on most Android phones, open Settings > System > Developer options, then switch off the master control. On Pixel phones, that control is labeled Use developer options; a restart prompt may appear.
The quickest way to disable Developer options
Android calls its advanced settings area Developer options. The reliable way to disable the whole area is to turn off its master switch, not merely one setting inside it.
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap System.
- Tap Developer options.
- Turn the main switch off. On Pixel, the switch is labeled Use developer options.
- If the phone asks to restart, follow the on-screen prompt.
Android menus vary by manufacturer, model and software version. If you do not see this exact route, use the phone maker’s support instructions for your model rather than changing unrelated settings.

These two controls are related but not identical. USB debugging is one setting inside Developer options. Turning USB debugging off changes only that connection-related option. Turning off the master Developer options switch disables the broader Developer options area.

If your goal is to remove Developer Mode, use the master switch. Switching off USB debugging alone does not perform the same action.
Step-by-step instructions on standard Android menus
1. Open Settings
Launch the built-in Settings app from the app list, home screen or notification shade. You do not need a computer, cable or third-party utility to change this setting.
2. Open System
Scroll to System and tap it. Google’s current general Android path places Developer options under this heading. Some phones use a differently organized Settings app, so the heading may be elsewhere.

Tap Developer options. Google’s guidance indicates that this menu appears when Developer options are enabled. If it is absent, skip to the troubleshooting section below instead of assuming the phone is malfunctioning.
4. Switch off the master control
At the top of the Developer options screen, locate the overall switch. Set it to Off. Do not stop at an individual item such as USB debugging if you intend to disable the entire feature.

5. Handle a restart prompt
Pixel documentation notes that a restart prompt may appear after you turn off Use developer options. Accept that prompt if it appears. A restart is not established as a universal requirement for every Android phone, so do not force a restart solely because another model may behave differently.
Pixel phones: label and behavior
On Pixel devices, Google uses the wording Use developer options for the master control. The menu is still reached through Settings > System > Developer options in Google’s documented route.

After switching the control off, Pixel may ask you to restart. Follow the prompt on that device. Because restart behavior can depend on the phone and software release, treat the prompt as device-specific rather than a rule for all Android handsets.
When your phone uses a different Settings layout
Android manufacturers can rename categories, move advanced settings or present a different navigation hierarchy. The same principle still applies: find the top-level Developer options page and turn off its master control.
- Use the Settings app’s search field and search for Developer options.
- Try searching for Use developer options if the phone uses Pixel-style wording.
- Check the System, Additional settings or similarly named advanced-settings area shown by your manufacturer.
- Compare the result with the support page for your exact model and Android version.
An older Google Community answer described Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options. That is an older interface path, not a universal current route. If your phone displays an Advanced submenu, it may be using a layout based on that older organization.

Google’s general guidance is explicit that settings can vary by phone and recommends contacting the device manufacturer for model-specific information. Do not assume that instructions for a Pixel, Samsung, Motorola or another manufacturer apply unchanged to your phone.
If an app only asks you to disable USB debugging
Some apps and services check specifically for USB debugging. In that case, you may not need to disable the entire Developer options area.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Developer options, or use Settings search to find the page.
- Locate USB debugging.
- Switch USB debugging off and confirm any warning shown by Android.
This changes one setting. If the original instruction says to turn off Developer options, return to the top of the page and use the master Developer options or Use developer options switch instead.
What turning off Developer options does—and what it does not require
The documented action is a Settings change: switch off the overall Developer options control. It is not a factory-reset procedure. Nothing in Google’s instructions tells you to erase the phone, remove your accounts or uninstall apps in order to disable Developer options.
The available official guidance establishes that a Pixel restart may be requested, but it does not establish one universal restart rule or identical side effects for every Android manufacturer and version. Follow the behavior shown by your own phone rather than relying on a generic promise about what will happen next.

Because Developer options contains many separate controls, disabling the master switch is broader than changing USB debugging alone. If you were following a temporary troubleshooting guide, read its wording carefully so you change only the scope it requests.

Developer options is not listed
Google says the menu appears when Developer options are enabled. If the menu is missing, search Settings for both Developer options and Use developer options. If neither appears, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model; the category may be placed under a different heading or not exposed in the same way.
You found USB debugging but not the main switch
USB debugging is an individual option, not the overall control. Scroll to the top of the Developer options page. The master switch is normally presented separately from the list of individual settings. If you cannot locate it, verify that you opened the actual Developer options page rather than a search result that jumped directly to USB debugging.
The phone shows a restart prompt
On Pixel, accept the prompt if you want the change completed as instructed. On another phone, follow that model’s on-screen directions. Do not assume every Android device requires a restart when the prompt is not shown.

The menu labels do not match
Labels and paths change with Android releases and manufacturer software. Treat Settings > System > Developer options as the general Google route, then use your manufacturer’s support documentation when the screen differs. An older path containing System > Advanced may appear on some interfaces.

An app still reports Developer Mode
First confirm which condition the app is checking. If it specifically checks USB debugging, switching off the master menu may not be the message the app is describing, and vice versa. Reopen Developer options and verify the relevant control’s displayed state. If the app’s wording is unclear, use its own support instructions rather than changing additional Android settings at random.
How to verify that Developer options is off
- Open Settings.
- Use Settings search for Developer options if you cannot remember the path.
- Open the result if it appears.
- Check that the master control is off, or that the phone no longer exposes the Developer options page in the same way.
Do not use the disappearance of one individual item as proof that the whole feature is disabled. USB debugging and the master Developer options switch have different scopes, so verify the control that matches your goal.
Choosing the right action for your situation
You are undoing a temporary development change
Use the master switch if you want the entire Developer options area disabled. This is the direct interpretation of “Turn off Developer options.”
You are responding to a USB-security warning
Determine whether the warning names USB debugging specifically. If it does, switching off USB debugging addresses that individual setting; disabling the full menu is a broader change.
You are following instructions written for another phone
Keep the objective, not necessarily the menu path. Find the equivalent master control on your own device and follow the labels shown there. Manufacturer support is the appropriate authority when the documented Google route does not match your screen.
