You can retrieve a limited set of information about the LinkedIn member who signs in to your app using OpenID Connect. Getting broader profile data—or data about someone else—requires specific LinkedIn-approved API access and remains subject to member privacy settings, storage limits, and the terms for the product you use. OAuth consent alone does not grant unrestricted profile access.
What LinkedIn API access can return
LinkedIn requires an application to be authorized and authenticated before it can fetch LinkedIn data. Most permissions and partner programs require LinkedIn’s explicit approval; its documented Open Permissions are the options available without special approval. Check the current access and permissions documentation because availability and requirements can change.
OpenID Connect: basic information about the signed-in member
For the general OpenID Connect product, the profile permission covers the authenticated member’s name, headline, and photo. The email permission covers that member’s primary email address. These scopes support a limited identity and sign-in use case; they are not a member-search endpoint or a way to export arbitrary public profiles. See LinkedIn’s permission descriptions.
Profile API: restricted, broader profile access
The separate Profile API is restricted to developers approved by LinkedIn and is governed by the permissions and data restrictions in the applicable agreement. For the authenticated member, LinkedIn documents GET https://api.linkedin.com/v2/me as the profile request. The response depends on the approved access, an authenticated access token, and the member’s privacy settings. Approval for one product or application should not be assumed to cover another. Can you retrieve someone else’s LinkedIn profile?
Not through a general-purpose profile lookup. LinkedIn’s Profile API documentation says a request for another member requires that member’s Person ID, which is available only through certain limited-access APIs. The returned information remains subject to privacy settings; LinkedIn says requests for another member succeed only if that member has not limited Off-LinkedIn Visibility.
This is a separate and more constrained case than retrieving the profile of the member who authorized your app. Do not treat a sign-in permission, a public profile page, or possession of a name as authorization to retrieve another person’s profile through the API.

Which authorization flow applies?
LinkedIn uses OAuth 2.0 for authorization and API authentication. Choose the flow documented for the particular permission and product rather than assuming one type of token provides every kind of access.

In member authorization, the app requests the required scopes and the member approves access before the app can act on that member’s LinkedIn resources. For a member-specific profile request, consent is part of the authorization process; it does not override the API’s approval requirements, privacy controls, or data-handling terms. Application authorization (two-legged OAuth)
Application authorization exists for certain application-level permissions. It does not turn member-profile access into unrestricted access. Use it only where the specific API permission and product documentation says it applies.
How to implement a compliant profile request
- Confirm the product and permission. Decide whether the use case needs only the signed-in member’s basic OpenID Connect information or an approved Profile API capability. Verify current availability and the scopes assigned to your application in LinkedIn’s access documentation and developer portal.
- Obtain the required authorization. Configure the OAuth flow for the permission. For member-specific access, request only necessary scopes and have the member grant access through the documented authorization flow.
- Call only an endpoint your app is approved to use. For an approved Profile API request for the authenticated member, LinkedIn documents
GET https://api.linkedin.com/v2/me. Send an authenticated access token and handle the response according to the member’s privacy settings and your approved permissions. - Apply the data rules before storing, displaying, or reusing a response. Check the storage, use, transfer, and display provisions in the applicable product documentation and agreement. Do not infer that data returned by an API can be retained or repurposed without limits.
- Recheck access and API lifecycle status before release and maintenance. Permission names, available programs, fields, and supported API versions can change. Review current documentation and migration guidance when building or updating an integration.
Can you store LinkedIn profile data?
LinkedIn’s Profile API guidance distinguishes between the authenticated member and other members. Data returned for authenticated members may be stored only with those members’ permission. Data returned for members other than the authenticated member may never be stored under that API guidance. Confirm whether your specific API agreement adds or clarifies requirements before designing persistence, caching, or deletion behavior. The rule appears in LinkedIn’s Profile API documentation.

What limits apply after retrieval?
Technical access is only one part of compliance. LinkedIn’s Marketing API restricted-use guidance places limits on member-data use, transfer, and display. Its examples prohibit using that data for unrelated advertising, sales prospecting, lead generation, CRM enrichment, marketing automation, recruiting, audience lists, or ad targeting. It also restricts export or transfer and where data may be displayed. Those rules are product-specific: check the agreement and terms for the API your application actually uses rather than assuming that Marketing API guidance applies identically to every LinkedIn product. The access documentation also marks Compliance permissions as closed and says they cannot be requested. Those scopes are not a workaround for profile retrieval; see the current permissions documentation.

Is scraping a substitute for API access?
No. The documented API routes are permissioned and constrained; their limits do not create an alternate entitlement to collect profile data by scraping. Use only an access method and purpose permitted by the applicable LinkedIn terms and agreement. If your application does not have the necessary API access, do not treat scraping as a replacement.
Check version status before deploying
LinkedIn’s restricted-use page says Marketing API version 202510 is scheduled to sunset on October 15, 2026. That lifecycle notice applies to that Marketing API version, not to all LinkedIn APIs. If your integration uses it, check LinkedIn’s versioning and migration guidance and supported versions before deployment. API lifecycle dates and access status can change, so verify them again when maintaining the integration.
