Prepare for AI by analyzing how your tasks may change, learning to use approved systems safely, strengthening skills that complement automation, and agreeing with your employer how AI-assisted work will be checked and governed. Exposure to AI is not a prediction that your job will disappear.

Start with the right question: which tasks will change?

A job is a bundle of tasks, not a single activity. An AI system may automate one part, accelerate another, create a new review duty, or leave a physical or relationship-based task largely unchanged. That is why “AI exposure” should not be read as a forecast of redundancy. The International Labour Organization’s 2025 update estimates that one in four workers worldwide are in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure, while noting that continued human input makes transformation more likely than full replacement for most jobs.

Exposure, automation risk and actual displacement are different measurements. The OECD’s 2026 analysis notes that high-skill occupations can be highly exposed yet less automatable because they involve non-routine cognitive and social work. Routine tasks generally face greater automation risk, but an employer’s choices, local demand, tool capability and worker protections determine what happens in a particular workplace.

Figure What it measures How to interpret it
One in four workers globally (ILO, 2025) Workers in occupations with some generative-AI exposure Potential task exposure, not the share of jobs that will disappear
Around one-quarter of workers, 2022–2024 (OECD, 2026) Another international estimate of worker exposure A separate estimate with a different method and time basis
Firm AI uptake rose from about 7% to 20% in OECD countries, 2021–2025 (OECD, 2026) Share of firms adopting AI Firm adoption, not the percentage of workers using AI
31% to 45% of vacancies in ten OECD countries (OECD, 2024) Vacancies in occupations classified as highly exposed; 31% was Austria and 45% the United Kingdom Vacancy composition, not a replacement rate; “high exposure” was at least one standard deviation above the study’s mean measure

The OECD’s vacancy analysis covers workers who use AI rather than build it. Exposed occupations include administrative, financial, technical, management and human-resources work. Use these figures to decide where to investigate your own tasks, not to calculate your personal probability of job loss.

1. Map your current tasks before choosing a course

Create a task inventory for a typical week. This is a planning tool, not a prediction model. Record the task, how often it occurs, the information it uses, the consequence of an error and the parts that require judgment or human contact.

  • Drafting and transformation: emails, reports, code comments, presentations, translation, transcription or formatting.
  • Summarizing and retrieval: meeting notes, case files, policies, research or customer histories.
  • Classification and routing: triaging requests, tagging documents, screening applications or assigning tickets.
  • Analysis: spreadsheet calculations, forecasting, anomaly detection or comparing options.
  • Customer and colleague interaction: explanation, negotiation, coaching, conflict resolution and relationship management.
  • Physical and regulated work: equipment operation, inspections, care, safety checks and decisions requiring a licensed professional.

For each task, mark one of four possibilities: AI could assist; AI could perform a first pass that you review; the task is unlikely to change soon; or the task may expand because someone must supervise, explain or correct an AI output. Identify dependencies too: a drafting tool may save time only if source data are clean and a person is available to approve the result.

Turn the inventory into a risk-and-learning list

Prioritize tasks that are frequent, information-heavy and easy to check. Treat high-impact tasks—those affecting safety, pay, eligibility, legal rights or sensitive personal information—with stricter controls. For every candidate task, write the human decision that must remain yours and the evidence you would need before accepting an output. This gives you a concrete agenda for training and for a conversation with your manager or worker representative.

2. Build practical AI literacy, not just tool familiarity

The ILO’s 2026 report, Changing landscape of skills in the age of AI, describes AI literacy as “increasingly seen as a foundational skill – an essential enabler of human agency and inclusion in AI-augmented environments.” In practice, literacy means understanding what an approved system can and cannot do, supplying relevant context, recognizing uncertainty and deciding when not to use it.

Learn a safe work cycle

  1. Check the policy first. Use only employer-approved systems and the permitted data types. Do not paste confidential business information, personal data, client records, passwords or unpublished material unless written workplace policy explicitly allows it.
  2. Define the task and success test. State the audience, format, constraints and facts the result must contain. Decide in advance how you will verify it.
  3. Provide minimum necessary context. Remove names and identifiers where possible. Supply authoritative excerpts or structured data instead of asking a system to guess missing facts.
  4. Review the output yourself. Check factual claims, calculations, citations, dates, tone, accessibility and omissions. Test important results against the original record or a second reliable method.
  5. Record human approval. Keep the prompt, source material and substantive edits when your organization requires an audit trail. Make clear who made the final decision.

Practice first on low-risk, reversible work such as reorganizing your own notes or generating alternative headings. A fluent answer can still be wrong, incomplete or based on a misleading assumption; confidence in the wording is not evidence of accuracy.

Know what “safe” includes

Safety covers privacy, security, bias, intellectual property, accessibility and accountability as well as factual correctness. Ask whether the tool retains prompts, whether outputs are used for further training, who can access logs and how errors are reported. If the system cannot provide an explanation or a reliable source for a high-stakes decision, use it for a draft or comparison—not as the final authority.

3. Strengthen the skills AI does not supply by itself

Digital familiarity is only one part of readiness. The ILO and OECD emphasize critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability, problem solving and continued learning alongside technical skills. Keep foundational literacy and numeracy strong: they are what let you detect a malformed argument, an impossible total or a missing caveat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Critical thinking: challenge assumptions, test evidence and recognize when a request is underspecified.
  • Communication: frame a problem clearly, explain uncertainty and translate a technical result for a customer or colleague.
  • Collaboration and empathy: negotiate priorities, handle disagreement and support people affected by an automated process.
  • Domain judgment: know the regulations, customers, materials and failure modes that a general-purpose system does not understand.
  • Adaptability: learn a revised workflow, switch tools and reflect on what worked instead of treating one system as permanent.

Do not assume that preparation requires becoming an AI engineer. A nurse, electrician, analyst or administrator may gain more from learning how to verify and supervise a system in their field than from studying model architecture.

4. Choose training tied to real work

There is no universal course or credential that prepares every occupation. The OECD’s 2024 analysis of training supply stresses relevant, inclusive and accessible learning for the AI transition. Compare options against the work you actually do:

Selection test Questions to ask
Task and sector relevance Does the practice use your documents, data types, regulations and workflow rather than generic demonstrations?
Safety and critical assessment Does it teach privacy, permissions, bias, source checking, error handling and when not to use AI—not only button-clicking?
Hands-on application Will you complete exercises with the current, approved tools and receive feedback on the result?
Access and cost Can you attend in your schedule and format, and is the price sustainable? Ask whether your employer provides paid time or funding.
Recognition and currency Will your employer or professional body recognize the learning, and how often is the material updated as tools change?

Ask a manager, union representative, professional association or trusted colleague which tasks are changing and what internal training exists. A short, current workshop applied to one workflow can be more useful than a broad certificate with no practical assessment. Keep examples of the work you improved and the errors you caught; they demonstrate capability without claiming that AI alone produced the result.

5. Discuss workload, review and rights with your employer

AI can remove a repetitive step while adding monitoring, exception handling or a faster output quota. The OECD’s 2024 workplace report records worker concerns about work intensity and the collection and use of data. It also reports that four in five surveyed workers said AI improved their performance and three in five said it increased enjoyment of work; these are survey responses, not a guaranteed causal effect.

  • Which tasks and tools are being introduced, and what problem are they intended to solve?
  • What training, paid time and technical support are available?
  • Who reviews AI-assisted work, at what stage and against which standard?
  • What data are collected about workers or customers, who can see them and how long are they retained?
  • How can you report an unsafe, biased or incorrect output without being penalized for raising it?
  • Will targets, staffing, schedules or job descriptions change when the tool is deployed?

The OECD Recommendation of the Council on Artificial Intelligence, revised in 2024, says governments “should empower people to effectively use and interact with AI systems across the breadth of applications, including by equipping them with the necessary skills.” At work, that principle supports asking for meaningful training, human oversight and a clear route to challenge decisions—not merely being told to adopt a tool.

6. Keep evidence of how your role is evolving

Maintain a simple log with the date, task, approved tool, time saved or added, errors found during review and any new responsibility created. Do not store sensitive prompts or records outside the systems your employer authorizes. Use the log in development discussions to request training, redesign a workflow or update your résumé with specific outcomes such as “reviewed automated summaries against source records” rather than an unsupported claim of productivity.

Review the inventory every few months. A system’s capability, your employer’s policy and the risks of a task can change independently. Retire experiments that produce unreliable results, and document a manual fallback for critical work so an outage or revoked permission does not halt the process.

A practical 90-day preparation plan

  1. Days 1–30: establish a baseline. List recurring tasks, classify their information and consequence of error, read your organization’s AI and data policies, and identify one low-risk approved use case.
  2. Days 31–60: practice and verify. Complete role-relevant training, run the use case with sanitized data, compare outputs with the original method, and record corrections, omissions and time effects.
  3. Days 61–90: formalize the workflow. Agree on review checkpoints, escalation rules, data handling and success measures with your manager or representative. Share the evidence, request support for the next skill, and update your task inventory.

This cycle keeps preparation focused on changed work rather than speculation about job titles. It also gives you a defensible way to show where human expertise remains essential and where a tool can safely assist.
