In my setup, moving the soundbar six inches improved the audio. That is a personal observation, not a magic measurement: where a bar sits relative to the TV, shelf edge, and nearby objects can affect how clearly sound reaches your listening seat.
Why can a soundbar sound muffled?
A soundbar sends sound directly toward you, but nearby surfaces can reflect it back into the listening area. Roku’s setup guidance says reflected sound can combine with direct sound in a way that reduces clarity, an effect it calls comb filtering. Roku notes that the loss of crispness can be especially noticeable in higher frequencies such as dialogue. Roku’s setup guidance explains the effect.
Physical obstructions are another possible cause. A cabinet lip, decorative object, or the TV itself may block part of the soundbar’s sound path. Shifting the bar can help if it changes those reflections or clears an obstruction; it may not help if the underlying issue is elsewhere.

Start with the instructions for your exact model. Placement advice and mounting requirements can vary by product. Sony advises owners to consult their model’s instructions for the safe mounting procedure, required tools, dimensions, and recommended position. Sony’s placement guidance also discusses wall placement.

On a shelf or TV stand
Roku recommends placing the soundbar’s front edge flush with the furniture edge, avoiding an enclosure, and clearing objects from in front of it. Roku’s instructions apply to the Roku models covered by that page, but the underlying checks—edge position, clearance, and obstructions—are useful when assessing your own setup.
Bose gives similar, model-specific advice for the Smart Ultra Soundbar: position it below and in front of the TV, close to the shelf edge, and leave the top speakers unblocked. It advises against an enclosed cabinet or diagonal placement in a corner. These are recommendations for that product, not universal dimensions for every soundbar. On a wall
If the preferred position is not supported by the stand, wall placement may be an option, but use the exact model’s mounting instructions. Check compatibility, dimensions, tools, and the required installation procedure before choosing a mount; do not assume that one mounting method fits every bar. Sony’s model-specific guidance explains why those details matter.
How to test whether moving it helps
- Check the current position. From your normal listening seat, note whether the bar is set back from the shelf edge, blocked by the TV or nearby objects, enclosed, or off-center relative to the TV.
- Change one placement variable. For example, move the bar forward so its front edge is flush with the furniture edge, or clear an object from its path. Avoid changing several things at once so you can tell what made a difference.
- Replay the same material. Use a familiar dialogue-heavy scene or passage at the same volume, listening from the same seat. Compare dialogue clarity and overall sound rather than relying on memory from a different program or volume.
- Keep or reverse the change. If the sound is clearer, keep the new position and make any further adjustments one at a time. If you hear no improvement, return to the original position and check another possible obstruction or placement issue.
This is a practical listening comparison, not a standardized test. The six-inch move that helped in my setup is not a recommended distance or a guarantee for other rooms and models.

What if the soundbar has a separate subwoofer?
Treat the subwoofer’s bass as a separate placement variable. TCL says subwoofer position can affect bass response and recommends trying different locations, then adjusting available settings as needed. A change that improves dialogue from the soundbar does not necessarily improve bass from the subwoofer. TCL’s placement advice covers both components.
