MSPs can help businesses secure AI by mapping where AI is used and what data it touches, checking the identity, endpoint, cloud, and security controls around it, and agreeing who monitors alerts and responds to incidents. That work creates a plausible service opportunity—not guaranteed demand or a substitute for the customer’s own security responsibilities.

Why do AI security concerns create an opening for MSPs?

AI changes both sides of cybersecurity: organizations need to protect the AI systems and data they use, while defenders must adapt to attacks that use AI. NIST describes the balance this way: “AI may create new opportunities such as the use of AI technology to augment defensive capabilities, but also challenges for implementing cybersecurity measures such as adapting existing defensive activities to thwart AI-enabled cyber-attacks as well as protecting AI systems and their components.” NIST’s Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI program page was updated July 15, 2026 (NIST: Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI).

For a business without dedicated security staff, an MSP may already manage identity, endpoints, cloud services, or security tools. That makes the provider a potential source of practical help: inventory AI use, find gaps in existing controls, connect tools, and establish monitoring and response procedures. The work should be scoped to the customer’s actual AI use and the provider’s demonstrated capabilities.

What AI security services should an MSP offer?

Inventory AI services, data, and access

Start by identifying which AI services employees or business systems use, what information flows into and out of them, and which people or systems can access them. The assessment should surface sensitive-data exposure and clarify where the customer’s data is processed or stored, to the extent that information is available from the service and its configuration.

Review the controls around AI use

Check whether identity controls, endpoint protections, cloud safeguards, and security tools cover the accounts, devices, and environments involved. NIST’s 2025 Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations offers shared terminology for understanding attacks and mitigations. It helps frame AI security as more than access to a chatbot: confidentiality, integrity, and availability matter, as do the security of training and output data, software, and hardware.

Integrate tools and define alert ownership

An MSP can connect existing security tools to the customer’s environment and help determine which team receives alerts, who investigates them, and how incidents are escalated. Tool integration alone is not a complete service; the agreement should say what is monitored, during which hours, and what response the customer can expect.

Offer monitoring or a time-bounded assessment

Some customers may need a one-time review; others may want ongoing monitoring and periodic reassessment as AI use changes. These are different commitments. An MSP should offer recurring monitoring only where it has the people, processes, and customer authorization to deliver it.

Assess agentic AI services carefully

AI agents that can take actions or interact with other systems warrant attention to the permissions and consequences of those actions. In May 2026, CISA and international partners published guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI services, including threat modeling, continuous monitoring, and security assessments (CISA: Secure Adoption of Artificial Intelligence: Agentic AI).

What does the available survey evidence say about customer expectations?

Barracuda’s 2025 MSP Customer Insight Report chart says 39% of surveyed organizations identified security-tool integration as an expected area of provider support. In the same chart, 36% identified help presenting the case for cybersecurity investment to senior management. These are findings from that report’s survey, not universal market-demand estimates; the figures do not establish how many businesses will buy AI security services. The report also describes expected support for AI/ML implementation, but the exact percentage is not stated here. See the Barracuda MSP Customer Insight Report 2025.

How should a business compare MSP AI security offerings?

Ask for a written scope rather than relying on a broad “AI security” label. Offerings can address different problems, and an assessment is not interchangeable with ongoing operations.

Why do MSP access and shared responsibility matter?

An MSP’s access can make support effective, but privileged accounts and access paths can also expand a customer’s attack surface. CISA’s 2018 advisory on advanced persistent threat activity exploiting managed service providers explains why provider security and account governance matter (CISA: Advanced Persistent Threat Activity Exploiting Managed Service Providers). This is foundational MSP security guidance, not an AI-specific finding, and it does not mean every MSP relationship is unsafe.

CISA and partner agencies have urged transparent security discussions between MSPs and customers and warned that malicious actors target both provider and customer networks (CISA and partners: MSP cybersecurity advisory announcement). Customers should use those discussions to document provider access, account controls, monitoring, escalation, and incident responsibilities. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide also advises considering third-party and MSP cyber hygiene; if an MSP manages backups, confirm that its backup practices meet relevant guidance.

  3. Which alerts does the MSP handle, who owns escalation, and what incident response is included?
  4. Who owns backup operations, and how will the customer verify that backup practices meet relevant guidance?
  5. When will the service be reassessed as the customer’s AI use, systems, or risks change?
