In the comparison reported in October 2026, a U.S.-to-China oil-tanker voyage was quoted at about $80 million, while a standard SpaceX Falcon 9 launch was priced at $74 million. That does not mean rockets and tankers provide equivalent transport—or that launch costs have not fallen. The tanker figure reflects an unusually tight, disrupted shipping market; the rocket figure is a launch-service price. Jalopnik relayed the tanker comparison from Bloomberg, citing shipbroker Gibson.

What does the $80 million versus $74 million comparison mean?

The two numbers are total prices for different services, not a like-for-like measure of transport efficiency. The reported $80 million covers a particular tanker voyage from the United States to China. The $74 million is the quoted price of a standard Falcon 9 launch service. A tanker moves crude oil between ports; a rocket launch delivers a payload to space.

The comparison does not show which option costs less per tonne, per kilogram, per mile, or per unit of cargo delivered. The available report does not match cargo mass, destination, distance, delivery time, or contract terms across the two services. It therefore supports a striking price comparison, not a conclusion that rockets are generally cheaper freight transport.

Why was the tanker voyage so expensive?

The October 2026 news account attributed the high charter price to a global shortage of tanker capacity and disrupted trade routes that made voyages longer. Vitol Group CEO Russell Hardy, quoted by Bloomberg and reproduced by Jalopnik, said: “There’s really not quite enough shipping to go around. We’ve had pretty parabolic pricing.”

The same report said one U.S.-to-China booking worked out to $41 per barrel, compared with an average of $4.50 per barrel for the same route the previous year. Those are attributed figures from a volatile market snapshot, not a normal or enduring tanker rate. The $80 million voyage price is likewise reported through Jalopnik’s account of Bloomberg, which attributes the comparison to shipbroker Gibson; it should not be read as a verified market-wide price.

Have rocket launch costs fallen?

Yes. The tanker comparison is not evidence that space travel has failed to get cheaper. A study covered by Space.com in July 2026 estimated that average launch cost per kilogram to orbit fell 96% from 1960 to 2025, in 2024 U.S. dollars.

The study dataset included 4,405 launches from 1960 through 2025, more than 330 rocket configurations, and multiple spacefaring regions. Its estimated average cost declined from $87,023 per kilogram in 1960 to $3,868 per kilogram in 2025. These are historical average estimates, not the price any particular customer would necessarily pay for a launch.

Space.com reports that the researchers associated the long-term decline with learning from accumulated launches, a post-Cold War shift toward commercial space activity, and the scaled introduction of reusable rockets. The study estimated a 21.2% reduction in average cost per kilogram for each doubling of cumulative payload. That is an industry-level learning-rate estimate; it does not mean every launch becomes 21.2% cheaper on a set schedule.

What might happen to launch costs next?

The study authors projected average costs of $1,600 per kilogram by 2030 and $300 per kilogram by 2040 if the historical trend continues. These are conditional forecasts, not observed prices or guarantees. Study co-author Alessio Terzi, an assistant professor of public policy at the University of Cambridge, cautioned: “Forecasting at moments of structural break is very hard in general, and therefore also in our case.”

The Space.com coverage also identifies potential headwinds: orbital debris, economic incentives for a dominant launch provider to raise prices, and governments’ interest in maintaining independent national access to orbit. Those factors could slow or alter the trend; the projections do not establish how they will play out.

Smartivity DIY Rocket Launcher STEM Kit for Kids 6-12 Years
  • BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
  • REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
  • SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
  • STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
  • RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.

How should you read the headline?

  • It compares two quoted totals: a specific, reported tanker voyage charter and the published price cited for a standard Falcon 9 launch.
  • It captures a shipping-market spike: the tanker price was attributed to tight capacity and disrupted, lengthened routes in an October 2026 report.
  • It does not compare equivalent cargo delivery: the figures do not establish a cost per unit of cargo or a general winner between ships and rockets.
  • It does not erase the long-term decline in launch costs: the study estimates a substantial fall in average cost per kilogram to orbit from 1960 to 2025.
