Genetically identical animals can behave differently because sharing DNA does not make development a copy-and-paste process. Behavior emerges from developing bodies and nervous systems, and those systems are shaped by both experience and biological variation that can arise during development. Even animals raised under apparently similar conditions may encounter different inputs—or develop differently in response to similar ones.
What genetic identity does—and does not—mean
DNA provides instructions and constraints for development; it does not specify every movement, preference, or response in a fully deterministic way. Animals described as genetically identical share the same or virtually identical genome, but that does not mean every cell, physiological state, developmental event, or experience is identical. Small differences in any of those can influence behavior.
Behavior is produced by systems that develop over time. The nervous system receives signals, forms and adjusts connections, and works alongside hormones, sensory organs, muscles, and other body systems. Genes influence how these systems form and function, but their effects unfold within cellular and environmental contexts. As a result, the same inherited sequence can be associated with more than one behavioral outcome.

Benjamin L. de Bivort’s 2025 review, “The Developmental Origins of Behavioral Individuality,” describes behavioral differences even among animals with the same genome and rearing environment. That observation is not a claim that genes or environments do not matter. It means that neither shared DNA nor broadly similar rearing guarantees identical behavior.

How development can produce differences without an obvious exposure
Stochastic events can change developmental trajectories
Cells do not carry out every molecular interaction in precisely the same way each time. Gene expression and other cellular processes can vary probabilistically. During development, those small variations may influence which cells take on particular roles, how tissues form, or how neural circuits develop. Once a difference has arisen, later processes can amplify it.
Development is also nonlinear: an early difference does not have to remain small. A change in one part of a developing system can affect later events, and some biological processes reinforce a state once it has begun. In the nervous system, variation in developing circuitry can contribute to differences in how an animal responds, even if researchers have not identified a distinct outside event that caused the divergence.
A 2015 review describes different phenotypes emerging from the same genotype in the same environment through stochastic cellular events, nonlinear processes during patterning and morphogenesis, and probabilistic self-reinforcing circuits in adult life. It discusses evidence for such variation under narrowly standardized laboratory conditions. The review’s PubMed record provides an entry point to that literature.
“Stochastic” does not mean causeless
In this context, stochastic means that outcomes involve probabilistic variation; it does not mean that behavior has no causes or that every action is arbitrary. Genes, a cell’s current state, and its surroundings can all influence the probabilities of what happens next. The point is that these influences need not force one identical outcome in every genetically identical animal.
Nor does one instance of different behavior prove that stochastic development was responsible. The explanation is a mechanism supported by research on developmental variation, not a label to apply whenever two animals differ. Identifying the cause of a particular difference requires evidence about that behavior and the animals’ development and conditions.
Why “the same environment” may not mean the same experience
Animals housed in the same cage, nest, or laboratory room share some conditions, but they do not necessarily receive identical inputs. Their position, timing of contact, social interactions, sensory experiences, and maternal influences can differ. Internal physiological states can differ too, affecting how an animal responds to a shared event. Conditions that look the same to an observer may therefore be different at the level relevant to a particular animal.

Researchers can standardize and measure conditions, which makes comparisons more meaningful. But “same measured conditions” is more precise than “literally identical experience.” Standardization also does not eliminate developmental stochasticity: the 2015 review describes variation in genetically identical organisms under tightly controlled laboratory conditions.

An experience can influence development, while an animal’s particular developmental state can shape its response to that experience. A small difference in input may matter differently to two animals, and an early cellular difference may affect how they later encounter or process their surroundings.
How experience can affect neural function and gene activity
Environmental conditions and experiences can alter physiology, neural function, and gene expression. The nervous system responds to environmental changes over multiple timescales, as described in a 2020 review by Natalie Niepoth and Andres Bendesky, “How Natural Genetic Variation Shapes Behavior.” De Bivort’s 2025 review also discusses neural-circuit features, neural activity, and neuromodulation as factors associated with behavioral individuality.
These ideas help explain why a behavior need not be fixed simply because an animal’s genome is fixed. An experience can affect the systems that produce behavior; repeated or developmentally timed inputs may have effects that differ from a brief, isolated event. The result depends on the exposure, the animal, and the biological process involved. The cited reviews do not justify treating every observed behavioral difference as the result of a known environmental event.
Neural systems are not merely passive outputs of DNA: they develop and respond to signals over time. The same external event can therefore meet different internal states, and a circuit’s activity or modulation can be part of the explanation for different behavioral tendencies. This does not identify a single cause for any one animal’s behavior; it explains why shared genes and broadly shared surroundings leave room for variation in how a nervous system develops and functions.

Epigenetic regulation refers to changes in gene activity that do not alter the underlying DNA sequence. Such regulation can affect whether, when, or how strongly genes are expressed. Some epigenetic states can persist as cells divide; the persistence and inheritance of particular changes vary, and claims about transmission across generations require care.

Epigenetic regulation is one possible bridge between experience or developmental variation and lasting differences in gene expression. Reviews of animal research describe environmental signals modifying epigenetic states during early development and adulthood. The 2025 review by Amy K. Webster and Patrick C. Phillips, “Epigenetics and individuality: from concepts to causality across timescales,” considers how epigenetics may relate to individual differences over time.
That does not mean that every experience rewrites an animal’s epigenome, or that an epigenetic difference automatically caused a behavioral difference. An association between a gene-regulatory state and behavior is not, by itself, proof of causation. Epigenetic regulation is a possible mechanism among several, and it should not be used as a catch-all synonym for environmental influence.
Persistence also needs to be described precisely. A regulatory state that lasts through cell divisions is not automatically inherited by offspring. Some forms of epigenetic change may persist across generations, but the extent and mechanisms vary by context. It is therefore safer to say that epigenetic regulation can help maintain a difference in gene activity than to assume that an experience is passed on unchanged to descendants.
Honeybees show how conditions can shape distinct outcomes
Honeybee queens and workers provide a clear example of environmental and developmental influence, rather than a clean example of stochastic variation. They originate from the same genome but can develop markedly different morphology, social behavior, and lifespan following differences in larval feeding. A 2018 review of epigenetic phenotype variation discusses this contrast.
The example shows why shared genetic information does not dictate one single adult form or pattern of behavior. It does not demonstrate that the difference arose randomly: the relevant larvae received different food conditions. It is therefore useful to distinguish an environmentally induced developmental contrast from cases in which animals differ despite tightly matched measured conditions.
It also illustrates why “same genome” alone is not enough to explain an outcome. Developmental conditions can direct animals with the same genetic starting point toward distinct adult phenotypes. The honeybee example supports the role of environmental input; it should not be used as evidence that all behavioral individuality results from feeding differences, epigenetics, or randomness.

How the main explanations differ—and overlap
| Route | What varies | Possible connection to behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental induction | Experiences or developmental conditions | Inputs can affect physiology, neural function, and gene regulation. | Effects depend on the exposure and context; the honeybee feeding example involves different conditions. |
| Stochastic developmental variation | Molecular and cellular events and developmental trajectories | Early differences can be amplified into physiological or neural-circuit differences. | Variation has been described under standardized conditions, but “stochastic” does not mean causeless or wholly random behavior. 2015 review |
| Epigenetic regulation | Gene-activity states, without a change in DNA sequence | May mediate or help stabilize differences in gene expression. | It is one possible mechanism; persistence varies, and an association alone does not establish causation. |
These routes can interact. An environmental input may affect gene regulation; a developmental difference may affect neural function; and an animal’s physiology may alter how it experiences or responds to later conditions. The categories help organize possible explanations, but they are not mutually exclusive accounts of every individual animal.

A comparison becomes more informative when it states what “same” means: the animals’ genetic relationship, which conditions were controlled, which exposures were measured, and which behavior was observed. A single behavioral difference cannot on its own identify whether the cause was an unmeasured experience, stochastic development, gene regulation, or an interaction among them.
Likewise, there is no universal percentage that can be assigned to genes, environment, epigenetics, or stochasticity as the source of behavioral variation. The contribution of each route depends on the organism, behavior, developmental stage, and conditions. The reviews cited here do not establish a general numerical partition that applies across animals or behaviors.
Variation may sometimes have an adaptive role. De Bivort’s 2025 review discusses the possibility that behavioral diversity could function as a bet-hedging strategy, in which variation may help a population cope with uncertain conditions. This is a hypothesis considered in the literature, not proof that all behavioral differences are adaptive or that each individual difference benefits the animal.

Does epigenetics explain why identical animals behave differently?
It can be one part of an explanation. Epigenetic regulation changes gene activity without changing DNA sequence and may help connect experience or developmental differences to persistent expression patterns. It is not a complete explanation on its own, and an association with behavior does not prove causation.
Does behavioral variation mean evolution or bet-hedging is at work?
Not necessarily. De Bivort’s 2025 review discusses bet-hedging as a possible adaptive role for behavioral diversity, but this is a hypothesis rather than a universal explanation. A difference between two animals does not by itself show that the difference benefits them or their population.
Can scientists say what percentage of behavioral differences comes from genes, experience, or randomness?
There is no universal percentage that applies across animals and behaviors. The relative contributions depend on the organism, behavior, developmental stage, and conditions, and a particular difference may involve several interacting routes.

Genetically identical animals can behave differently because shared DNA does not make development deterministic. Probabilistic cellular events, environmental inputs, neural-system development, and epigenetic regulation can interact to produce individual differences. Which factors matter most depends on the animal, behavior, developmental stage, and conditions; no single cause or universal percentage explains them all.
