Cryptocurrency can produce a gain if an asset rises in value or if an activity such as trading, staking, or mining generates proceeds. None of these routes guarantees a profit: prices can fall, costs can exceed rewards, and fraud or lost access can wipe out holdings. There is no reliable return estimate that applies across these methods.

How can I make money with cryptocurrency?

The main routes differ in what creates a possible return and what you have to do to pursue it. Buying and holding is exposure to price changes; trading tries to benefit from shorter-term moves; staking and mining involve activity connected to a blockchain network. Those descriptions are not a ranking: the available U.S. regulator sources do not provide comparable performance data or a common expected-return calculation for the four routes.

Route How a return might arise How losses or setbacks can occur Control, costs, and complexity
Buy and hold An asset may appreciate and be sold for more than its purchase cost. The asset may fall in value; a sale at a lower price can lock in a loss. You may hold the keys yourself or rely on a platform. Consider fees, spreads, transfer costs, safe access, and transaction records.
Active trading A trader seeks to benefit from price movements by buying and selling. Price moves can go against the position; mistakes and leverage can magnify losses. Trading takes time and involves fees, spreads, and recordkeeping. A platform may control access to funds, and some spot markets operate on platforms that are unregulated and unsupervised, according to the CFTC.
Staking Some network arrangements provide rewards for participating in protocol operations. Rewards are not guaranteed; asset-price changes, protocol issues, or the terms and operation of a service can affect the outcome. Arrangements vary: a participant may interact with a protocol directly or use a service. Understand who controls access, what fees apply, and what rules govern withdrawals.
Mining Mining may earn protocol rewards for contributing computing resources to a network. Asset value and rewards may not cover hardware, electricity, and operating costs; equipment and network conditions matter. It requires technical setup and ongoing resources. Profitability cannot be established without current, location-specific costs, network difficulty, rewards, and asset value.

In a March 17, 2026 joint interpretation, effective March 23, the SEC and CFTC addressed how federal securities laws apply to certain transactions involving, among other activities, protocol staking and protocol mining. That discussion does not establish that every staking product, pooled service, or mining arrangement is outside securities laws; the activity and facts matter. Read the SEC and CFTC interpretation.

Can you earn passive income from crypto?

Some crypto services advertise rewards for staking or other participation, but “passive” does not mean risk-free or guaranteed. A reward may be denominated in an asset whose market price changes, and the service or protocol may have rules, fees, access limits, or technical risks. A displayed reward rate alone does not tell you what you will keep after costs or what the asset will be worth when you can access it.

Before using a staking service, find out how rewards are generated, who holds or controls the keys, how withdrawals work, what fees apply, and what happens if the protocol or provider has a problem. Do not assume that an arrangement is legally or economically equivalent to holding an asset directly.

Is crypto trading profitable?

Trading can result in gains, but a strategy cannot assure them. The CFTC says virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and warns that leverage in margined futures magnifies both profits and losses. It also cautions that spot markets may operate on platforms without regulatory oversight. As the agency puts it, “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” Read the CFTC’s virtual-currency trading advisory.

Regulator guidance is to avoid products or strategies you do not understand, learn how they can lose money, and speculate only with money you can afford to lose. These are general risk principles, not a forecast of what any individual will earn.

How does crypto staking work?

In protocol staking, participants contribute tokens to a network process used by some blockchain protocols. Depending on the arrangement, a participant may operate directly with the protocol or rely on an intermediary or pooled service. The details—including reward mechanics, access to funds, and who controls the keys—depend on the specific network and service, so check the terms rather than treating “staking” as one uniform product.

The SEC and CFTC’s 2026 interpretation discusses certain protocol staking activity, but it should not be read as a blanket conclusion about all staking products or providers. Legal treatment depends on the facts of the arrangement. The agencies’ interpretation is available here.

What should you check before buying a token?

A token’s label does not establish its value or the rights it gives its holder. The CFTC says there is no widely accepted standard for valuing tokens and advises prospective buyers to understand the rights attached to a token and the factors that could affect its value. Offerings can be fraudulent, and promised products may fail. See the CFTC’s digital-currency advisory.

  • Identify the rights, if any, attached to the token and what the project says those rights mean.
  • Understand what could drive demand or reduce the token’s value; a promotional label is not a valuation method.
  • Verify that the platform and wallet you use are legitimate before sending funds or credentials.
  • Treat claims of guaranteed returns as a warning sign, not as proof of safety.

Do I have to pay taxes on cryptocurrency earnings?

For U.S. taxpayers, digital assets are treated as property, digital-asset income is taxable, and transactions may have to be reported. The tax result depends on the transaction and your circumstances; there is no single rate or rule that applies identically to every sale, reward, or other activity. The IRS digital-assets hub links to current guidance on topics including sales, basis, staking, and broker reporting. Keep transaction records and consult current IRS instructions or a tax professional about your situation. Visit the IRS digital-assets hub.

How do I keep cryptocurrency safe?

Crypto custody is about how and where assets are stored and accessed. A wallet does not hold the crypto itself: it manages the private keys or passcodes used to access it. If you lose control of those credentials or disclose them to a scammer, you may lose access to the assets. The SEC’s investor bulletin explains custody choices and their risks. Read the SEC custody bulletin.

Choose custody with its trade-offs in mind

Using a platform or custodian may make access and administration easier, but you depend on that provider and should understand its fees and policies. Ask about asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closing fees. Self-custody gives you direct responsibility for credentials; a hardware wallet is one optional physical tool for managing keys, not protection against price declines, protocol failures, or user error.

Protect access and watch for withdrawal scams

  • Keep private keys and recovery information secret, and be alert to phishing messages that imitate legitimate services.
  • Verify the identity and legitimacy of a platform, wallet, or support contact before transferring funds or sharing information.
  • Be especially suspicious if someone demands unexpected fees or supposed taxes before releasing a withdrawal. The CFTC describes this tactic in its digital-asset fraud guidance.

Scammers may impersonate organizations or promote tokens, trading platforms, or guaranteed returns. Do not send additional funds to unlock a promised balance without independently verifying the claim; an unexpected withdrawal charge can be part of a fraud pitch. The CFTC’s fraud guidance outlines these warning signs.
