Link building can expand a website’s reach in two different ways: links can help Google discover pages, and links on other sites can give their readers a path to your content. Google also uses links as one signal when assessing relevance—but no link guarantees a ranking, a visit, or a sale.

How do backlinks help a website?

Google says it uses links both “as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl.” Those are separate mechanisms: a crawler may discover a page through a link, while a person may follow that same link to visit it. Discovery does not mean a page will be indexed or rank, and a link’s presence does not ensure a human will click it. Google’s link best practices describe links as one part of how its systems work, not as a stand-alone ranking guarantee.

Discovery through links

A link from a crawlable page can provide Googlebot with a route to a page it might not otherwise have found. Internal links can help connect pages on your own site; external links can point crawlers toward your content from elsewhere. A link is a discovery path, not a promise that Google will crawl or index the destination.

Relevance signals

Links can help Google understand relationships between pages, but the documentation does not say that every backlink is an endorsement or that a particular number or anchor phrase will produce a ranking. Other systems and signals also matter. Treat link building as one part of publishing and maintaining useful, discoverable content.

Human referral paths

A link in a relevant article, resource page, or other useful context can introduce your page to people already reading about the subject. Whether that produces visits depends on the audience, placement, and usefulness of the destination. A link that exists for crawlers but makes little sense to readers may have limited referral value.

Can link building bring more visitors to my site?

It can create opportunities for both referral visits and search discovery, but the available sources do not establish a typical traffic increase caused by link building. An Ahrefs roundup labeled 2026 reports a positive correlation between the number of websites linking to a page and its search traffic. That association does not show that links alone caused the traffic; popular or useful pages may attract both links and visitors. Ahrefs’ 2026 SEO statistics roundup also reports a positive correlation between higher Google results-page positions and new followed referring domains in an analysis of 10,000 SERPs. This is observational, not a causal estimate or a forecast for an individual site.

To evaluate an opportunity, consider the audience and purpose of the link rather than counting backlinks alone:

  • Audience relevance: Is the linking page read by people who may genuinely need your destination?
  • Editorial context: Does the link fit naturally, and does nearby text explain what readers will find?
  • Destination usefulness: Does your page answer the need that prompted the link?
  • Discovery and navigation: Can people and crawlers follow the link to a relevant page?
  • Policy treatment: Is the link paid, sponsored, or affiliate-related, and is it properly qualified?
  • Evidence quality: Is a claim about results supported by official guidance, an observed correlation, or merely a promise?

These are practical comparison questions, not a validated scoring formula or universal quality threshold. The cited sources provide no standard amount of traffic or ranking improvement to expect.

How can you build links that are useful to readers?

Start with pages worth citing or recommending: clear resources, original explanations, useful tools, or other material that serves a real audience need. Pursue links where they help readers discover that material, rather than treating link acquisition as an end in itself.

Make links crawlable and descriptive

Google recommends links implemented as crawlable <a> elements with an href. Use anchor text that is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the destination. The surrounding context should make the link’s purpose clear. Avoid stuffing keywords into anchor text or implying that a chosen phrase guarantees a ranking.

Connect important pages internally

Use internal links to help visitors move between related pages and to clarify how your content fits together. Google recommends that every page you care about have at least one internal link from another page. It does not prescribe a magical ideal number of links per page, so add links where they genuinely improve navigation or understanding.

Link out when it helps explain or support a page

External links can give readers useful context, such as a source for a claim or a route to a related resource. Google says site owners need not fear linking out; explain what readers can expect from the destination and make the link relevant to the surrounding content.

Which link practices should you avoid?

Google warns against link schemes intended to manipulate search rankings. A link-building plan should not depend on buying links to pass ranking credit, excessive guest-post campaigns whose main purpose is passing ranking signals, private blog networks, or keyword-stuffed anchors. Links created this way can put the site at odds with Google’s spam policies; Google says its systems may reassess spam links.

Paid, sponsored, and affiliate links need appropriate qualification. Google’s 2021 guidance says, “In general, using affiliate links to monetize a website is fine,” and specifies that affiliate links should be qualified with rel="sponsored", whether added manually or dynamically. See Google’s guidance on qualifying links and link spam for its discussion of affiliate, sponsored, and guest-post links.

How do I check who links to my website?

Google Search Console’s Links report lets site owners inspect the link information Google provides, including top linking sites, pages on your site receiving links, link text, and internal links. It is a useful way to review known links and the paths they point to, not a complete or real-time census of every link on the web. Google documents the report in its Search Console Links report help.

  1. Open Google Search Console and select the property for your website.
  2. In the left navigation, open Links.
  3. Review the external-link sections for top linking sites, top linked pages, and top linking text; use the internal-links section to inspect how pages on your own site connect.
  4. Open the available details or export the report if you need to examine the listed pages and linking sources more closely.

Use the report to identify links worth checking in context: confirm that the linking page is relevant, that the destination is useful, and that a commercial relationship has been qualified where required. Do not treat a count in Search Console as a measure of traffic caused by links or as proof of a ranking effect.
