App store optimization (ASO) can help more relevant people discover an app and help more of those who see its store listing choose to download it. Treat those as separate problems: diagnose discovery by store source, then improve and test the listing, measuring each change against a clearly defined baseline. Neither a listing edit nor an experiment guarantees higher rankings or more downloads.
How does ASO lead to organic app downloads?
ASO works across two stages of a store funnel: discovery and conversion. Discovery is whether an app appears in relevant store surfaces, such as search or browse. Conversion is whether people who encounter its listing go on to download it. An app can have strong exposure but a weak listing response, or a persuasive listing that few people encounter. The remedy depends on which stage is underperforming.
Start by making the listing relevant to the audience and store surface in question. Its name, description, screenshots, and other available creative should accurately explain what the app does and why it may suit that audience. This is practical listing guidance, not a claim that either store uses a particular wording formula to rank apps.
Which metrics show where downloads are being lost?
Use the store’s own definitions and keep the denominator attached to every conversion rate. Apple and Google report different units and acquisition categories, so their raw rates should not be treated as directly comparable.
#1 Best Overall
| Store | Useful reporting | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | App Store Connect acquisition reporting includes unique impressions, product page views, and total downloads. Sources include App Store search, App Store browse, app referrer, web referrer, and custom campaigns. | Apple’s reported conversion rate is total downloads divided by unique impressions—not product page views. Total downloads can include first-time downloads and redownloads. See Apple’s Acquisition – App Store Connect Analytics Help. |
| Google Play | Play Console reports user acquisitions and device acquisitions, and provides store listing conversion analysis. Its organic Play Store channel includes people who discovered an app through search or explore; those components are also reported separately. | Do not substitute device acquisitions for user acquisitions. Some installs may happen without a store listing visit, and the acquisition report does not track web or over-the-air impressions. See Google Play Console Help’s Understand and grow your app’s user base and Measure your app’s acquisition and retention. |
Read a funnel in stages rather than treating “downloads” as a synonym for impressions or ranking. If exposure is weak, investigate discovery by source and market. If exposure is present but the listing is not converting well, examine the page’s relevance and clarity and consider testing its creative.
How should you establish an organic-download baseline?
- Choose the outcome. Decide whether the immediate concern is low discovery, weak listing engagement, or low install conversion. Record the exact metric you intend to improve.
- Set the measurement frame. In App Store Connect, use acquisition reporting; in Play Console, use acquisition and store listing conversion reports. Note the date range, source, country or locale, language, metric denominator, and whether the count is users, devices, or downloads.
- Break out the segments. Compare search with browse or explore where the platform reports them, and inspect relevant markets and languages. Google Play’s listing analysis can be filtered by traffic source, listing, country, language, UTM source or campaign, and acquisition state.
- Check what brings people to the listing. Google recommends reviewing the search terms that drive listing visits and looking for markets or translations with weaker conversion. Use the available breakdowns to identify a specific gap rather than relying only on an overall rate.
- Keep the comparison fair. Compare like-for-like periods and segments. Changes in traffic mix, seasonality, source definitions, or attribution windows can alter reported results even when the listing itself has not changed.
Google notes that numbers can differ between Play Console, Google Ads, Google Analytics, and third-party sources because their measurement methods differ. Before interpreting a discrepancy, align the date range, channel, attribution window, and counting unit. Apple and Google’s figures also use different categories and counting units, so a higher raw rate on one store does not by itself show that ASO performed better there.
What listing changes should you make first?
Use the segment diagnosis to shape the page. A search audience has expressed a particular intent; a person encountering the app through browse or explore may have less context. In either case, make the app’s purpose and value clear and keep the listing accurate. Avoid promising functionality or outcomes the app does not deliver.

- Ensure screenshots and previews represent the actual experience and communicate the most relevant benefits.
- Review language and localization where conversion differs by market or language.
- Change a limited set of elements at a time when you need to understand which treatment may have affected the result.
These are editorial practices for improving relevance and comprehension, not guarantees of ranking changes. The platform reports help identify performance patterns; they do not establish that a specific creative edit caused a change in organic discovery.
How can you test App Store listing creative?
Apple’s Product Page Optimization lets developers compare alternate product-page treatments with the original to evaluate conversion. Apple’s current guidance, accessed October 8, 2026, allows up to three treatments in addition to the original. Eligible users are randomly shown a treatment and continue seeing that same treatment during the test.
Apple says a test can run for up to 90 days or until the developer stops it. Its estimated duration and required-impression figures are guidance, not guarantees. Apple reports unique impressions, conversion rate, improvement, and confidence. A treatment receives the labels “Performing Better” or “Performing Worse” at at least 90% confidence under this Apple feature; that threshold should not be generalized to other experiments.

- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
Apple says Product Page Optimization can test screenshots, app previews, descriptions, and app icons. New metadata requires App Review approval, and a running test cannot be changed. More treatments can take longer to produce conclusive results, so keep the number of variants and the question being tested manageable. Apply a treatment when the evidence is strong enough for the decision, while weighing the value of a possible improvement against test duration and traffic volume. Google Play’s acquisition reporting is designed to help publishers examine changes in impressions, acquisitions, and conversion. Use its store listing conversion analysis to separate results by source, country, language, listing, and other available filters. Review search terms, localization, and market-level performance before deciding whether the issue is the audience reaching the listing or the listing’s ability to convert it.
Best Value
Google Play also provides peer context for daily click-through rate in some reporting views, including a peer median and 25th- and 75th-percentile comparisons. Its period breakdown uses the peer median for the last 28 days in the selected range. These are comparison views, not universal ASO targets or promises of a result. Google directs publishers to store listing experiments as a tool for evaluating listing optimization; do not assume Apple’s experiment mechanics or confidence labels apply to Google Play. See Google Play’s Acquisition reporting.
How should you interpret results and keep improving?
After a change or experiment, review the same metric, source, locale, and date frame used for the baseline. For an experiment, consider the reported conversion, lift, confidence, and traffic allocation together. A before-and-after change is not proof of causation: the audience mix, season, and measurement window may have shifted.
Downloads are not the only meaningful outcome. Where reporting access and availability permit, Google Play acquisition reporting also supports buyer and retained-installer views. Monitor retention or downstream value in the publisher’s analytics when possible; a larger install count alone does not establish that the app reached a well-matched audience.

- Identify the weakest funnel stage and segment.
- Make a focused, accurate listing improvement that addresses that diagnosis.
- Use the platform’s experiment tools when available and relevant.
- Compare results over a suitable, like-for-like period and retain the metric definitions.
- Repeat the diagnosis if results differ by source, market, or language.
