Use three separate controls to track SMS alerts: reject invalid destinations, suppress recipients who have opted out, and process asynchronous delivery-status callbacks. An API’s initial acceptance response does not prove the alert reached a handset. SMS providers also do not share one universal “bounce” model: an invalid number, an opt-out, a provider or carrier rejection, and a delivery failure are distinct outcomes.
What “bounce” means for SMS alerts
Email systems commonly describe undeliverable mail as a bounce. SMS APIs expose a more varied set of outcomes, including invalid or unreachable destinations, opt-out suppression, provider or carrier rejection, and later delivery reports. Check the API’s product-specific status definitions rather than treating every failure as the same kind of bounce.
In particular, distinguish submission from delivery. Vonage’s Messages API separates submitted from later SMS statuses such as delivered and rejected. Sinch’s Latam SMS API documentation likewise distinguishes carrier submission from a later device delivery report. A successful initial send response can therefore be followed by an asynchronous failure update.

1. Invalid-destination rejection
Check when and how the API classifies a destination as invalid, and whether the reason is available in a response or callback. Sinch’s Latam SMS API documentation distinguishes INVALID_DESTINATION_NUMBER from an opt-out block. Those codes describe that documented product and geography; they should not be assumed to apply to every Sinch product or region. Sinch SMS delivery reports

2. Opt-out suppression
Determine whether the specific API product stores and enforces opt-outs, and how it reports a suppressed send. Vonage says a message to a recipient who opted out from the sending number is blocked and reported asynchronously through a receipt or webhook. The initial request may have been accepted before that later status arrives. Vonage Messages API opt-out documentation
Consent handling is not necessarily shared across a provider’s products. Sinch Conversation API documents consent lists for all, marketing, and notification opt-outs, but its documentation says SMS STOP replies do not trigger opt-out callbacks on unsupported channels. 3. Asynchronous status reporting
A callback gives the app lifecycle information after the send request, including whether a message was delivered or rejected where the product reports those states. Vonage describes status callbacks as updates when a message changes state; Twilio’s Message resource documents a StatusCallback endpoint for message updates. Callbacks provide status information, not a guarantee that every provider uses identical states or error details.
Vonage’s documentation puts the distinction plainly: “The Messages API sends status callbacks to your webhook URL to inform you whenever an event changes the state of a message — for example, when it’s submitted, delivered, or rejected.” Vonage Messages API status callbacks Twilio Message resource

These products cannot be ranked on a shared “bounce” scale from those descriptions alone. The sources do not provide a unified regional matrix, and API semantics can depend on product, channel, country, sender type, account setup, and carrier.

A useful high-level flow is: send request accepted → submitted to a provider or carrier → delivered or rejected/failed status arrives later. The exact meaning of “submitted” varies by product, so preserve the provider’s own state instead of treating it as a synonym for handset delivery.

- Record the initial response. Store the provider message identifier and the initial status returned by the specific API.
- Receive status callbacks. Configure the documented callback or webhook endpoint and associate each update with the stored message identifier.
- Update app-facing state. Map provider-specific statuses into states your application needs, such as pending, delivered, rejected, or suppressed, while retaining the original status and error details.
- Handle repeated or out-of-order updates safely. Make callback processing idempotent and avoid overwriting a more informative final state with an earlier lifecycle event. This is an implementation recommendation for asynchronous callbacks, not a provider guarantee.
Keeping both a normalized application state and the original provider status/error makes it possible to present a clear alert outcome without losing details needed to diagnose failures.

What to verify before choosing an API
- Which exact API product and channel the documentation covers.
- Whether invalid destinations and opt-outs have distinct status or error details.
- Whether opt-outs are enforced by the provider, by your application’s consent model, or through both.
- What each callback status means: provider acceptance, carrier acceptance, or end-device delivery report.
- Which country, sender type, account configuration, and carrier conditions affect the documented behavior.
