AI helps wildlife teams turn images, sounds and other sensor data into usable detections faster—but it does not make a camera trap see beyond its frame, guarantee accurate counts, or remove the need for expert review. Its value depends on matching the model to the field question, checking how it performs at the actual site, and having people ready to verify and act on the results.

What does AI do in wildlife monitoring?

A monitoring program starts with a question and a sensor. A camera trap may record which species pass a location; a microphone may capture calls; other systems can process seismic observations or molecular evidence. AI can help detect an animal in a recording, classify its species, identify an individual, count observations, or assist with behavior annotation.

These are different tasks, not interchangeable measures of “accuracy.” Detecting that an animal is present does not establish how many animals live in an area, and recognizing a species does not necessarily mean a model can identify the same individual later. Teams still need to decide what evidence would answer their question and how detections will be checked.

How does an AI monitoring system work in the field?

  1. Choose the question and sensor. Decide whether the goal is to document presence, estimate numbers, recognize individuals, study behavior, or alert a team to a possible threat. Select cameras, microphones, or another suitable source of observations.
  2. Collect observations in the field. Sensor placement, visibility, habitat, power, and access shape what the system can record. A camera trap samples the area in front of its lens; it is not a complete view of a landscape.
  3. Run a model on the data. Some programs analyze recordings after they are retrieved. Others use edge processing—a model running near the sensor—to filter observations before transmitting selected events.
  4. Validate useful detections. People can check uncertain classifications, investigate false alerts, and judge whether the result is reliable enough for the decision being made.
  5. Act on the result. A detection only helps if the relevant researchers or field teams can interpret it and, where needed, respond.

In a vendor-described TrailGuard workflow, an on-camera model filters frames for people, vehicles, or animals; selected images go to cloud processing for detection and species classification; and uncertain cases are referred to a person. Nightjar also says the system limits classification to species expected near each camera. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its system, not independent performance findings.

Which monitoring methods can use AI?

Sensor or method What it can contribute Key constraint
Camera traps Images or video for species detection and classification, and potentially individual identification or behavior annotation. Coverage is limited to the camera’s field of view; results can change when a model is used in a different environment.
Acoustic sensors Recordings that can be analyzed for calls and other animal sounds. Sound-based observations are not the same as a complete count or a visual identification.
Seismic observations Sensor data that can contribute to monitoring where relevant signals can be interpreted. The evidence available here does not establish a universal performance level or a single use case for this modality.
Satellite imagery Broad-area imagery that may help flag likely animal locations in remote landscapes. Resolution, vegetation, shadows, animal visibility, and image timing can limit detection and counting.
Molecular data Evidence that can contribute to wildlife monitoring and analysis. The appropriate interpretation depends on the sampling and research question; no universal model performance is established here.

The modalities produce different kinds of evidence and operational demands. There is no universally best sensor: a method useful for finding a likely location may not be adequate for estimating a population.

How accurate is AI at identifying animals?

Accuracy figures depend on the species, task, dataset, habitat, and system. A 2023 review in Royal Society Open Science reports around 90% species-classification accuracy across some cited camera-trap publications. That is a range reported across studies, not a promise for a new deployment.

Reported result What it refers to Source and qualification
Around 90% Species classification in camera-trap publications cited by the review. Royal Society Open Science review, 2023; a general result across cited studies, not a guarantee for a particular site.
96% across 25 species Camera-trap species classification by Mbaza AI. As reported by the Royal Society Open Science review, 2023.
74% among 276 individuals Individual-elephant identification in one CNN-based study. As summarized by the Royal Society Open Science review, 2023; this is a specific study and task.

These results should not be read as interchangeable benchmarks. Species classification and distinguishing individual elephants are different problems. The review also notes that systems can struggle when transferred to new environments, so teams need validation on observations representative of their own site and conditions.

Can satellite imagery and AI replace wildlife surveys?

Not on the evidence described in a 2022 feasibility case study by the Connected Conservation Foundation. The study used satellite imagery with 30 cm resolution and explored whether AI could help survey wildlife across difficult-to-reach areas. Tested approaches did not consistently match traditional aerial survey accuracy.

The case study describes false positives from off-the-shelf models, difficulty distinguishing rhinos from elephants in some imagery, animals obscured by vegetation, interference from shadows, and satellite pass-over timing that could coincide with animals resting under cover. Its more promising use was to produce heatmaps that help people decide where to look, rather than to replace accurate aerial counts. The review also notes that high-resolution satellite acquisition can be costly and that drone noise can affect animal behavior.

When does real-time AI alerting help?

When the field question is whether a team should respond to a likely event, filtering at the sensor can reduce the need to transmit every frame. Nightjar reports that its TrailGuard system checks for people, vehicles, or animals on-camera and that a West Bengal deployment sent alerts in roughly 42 seconds from detection. The vendor contrasts that with traditional detection pathways it describes as closer to 170 minutes. Nightjar’s page does not state a publication date for these figures, and both the alert time and comparison are vendor-reported—not independently verified results.

Alerting is a different goal from building a complete census. A fast notification may be useful for a time-sensitive response, while a population estimate requires suitable coverage, a defined counting method, and validation. Teams should assess the system against the outcome they need, not treat low latency as proof of comprehensive monitoring.

What should conservation teams check before deploying AI?

  • Define the decision. Specify whether the model must detect presence, classify species, identify individuals, estimate counts, or trigger a response.
  • Check coverage and visibility. Consider camera view, vegetation, shadows, landscape scale, image resolution, and when a satellite or other sensor can observe the area.
  • Test errors at the site. Look for both false positives and missed detections, and validate performance in the habitat and conditions where the system will be used.
  • Plan for human review. Decide who checks uncertain cases and how validated observations will inform field decisions.
  • Account for operations. Consider field access, equipment placement, batteries, data retrieval, connectivity, and the time between detection and useful action.
  • Match the method to the job. A tool that helps locate likely herds may not provide the accurate counts required for a survey; sensor choice should follow the monitoring question.
  • Involve ecological expertise. The 2023 review emphasizes collaboration between AI practitioners and ecological researchers so that model outputs are interpreted in context.

AI is most useful as a way to help conservation teams manage and interpret more observations—not as an automatic substitute for field knowledge. A model’s output becomes evidence only when its limits are understood, its performance is checked for the task and site, and people can judge what the result means.
