A webpage can feel instant from thousands of miles away because the server that answers your browser may be a nearby CDN edge—not the site’s distant origin. Cached files, reused connections, modern web protocols, and loading the visible part of a page first all reduce the wait you notice. Distance still matters when content is not cached or must be personalized.
Does a CDN mean the website is hosted near you?
Not necessarily. A site’s origin server stores or generates its content, but a content delivery network (CDN) can keep eligible copies at data centers called edge locations. When your request reaches an edge with the requested file already cached, that edge can serve it without a round trip to the origin.
If the edge does not have the file, it must fetch it from an upstream cache or the origin. That trip still takes time. Cloudflare describes its own cache hits as serving content from a nearby data center and eliminating the round trip to the origin; this is a description of Cloudflare’s service, not a guarantee that every CDN request will be a hit. Cloudflare’s slow-website troubleshooting guide explains the distinction.

Several different stages contribute to the delay. Some can be shortened or avoided by caching and connection reuse; none makes a long physical route disappear.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
- DNS lookup: The browser needs an IP address for the domain. A resolver cache may already have the answer. If not, the resolver must look it up, and that can take longer because of distance, congestion, packet loss, resolver load, or cache misses. A page that depends on many different domains may require several lookups. Google’s DNS performance guidance describes these factors.
- Connection and security setup: The browser connects to the service and negotiates secure transport. If a connection to that origin is already open, the browser may reuse it rather than repeat setup for every request.
- Cache lookup: If a CDN is involved, the edge checks whether it can serve a cached copy. A hit avoids the origin trip; a miss requires a fetch from an upstream cache or origin.
- Server work and transfer: The service processes the request and sends the response. The time until the first response byte arrives is distinct from the time needed to transfer the whole response.
- Browser rendering: The browser can display useful visible content before it has downloaded every image, script, or below-the-fold item.
Why can a page look ready before it is fully loaded?
Perceived speed is not the same as completing every request. A site can prioritize the text and images near the top of the page, defer nonessential scripts or images, and load some resources only when they are needed. The visible portion can therefore become useful while other work continues in the background. This changes what the reader waits for; it does not shorten the network path to an uncached server. Cloudflare’s latency explainer discusses proximity and asset optimization.
How do HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 reduce waiting?
Modern protocols can reduce some connection overhead, but they do not defeat distance. HTTP/2 multiplexes multiple request-and-response streams over one TCP connection. HTTP/3 uses QUIC over UDP; it can reduce connection setup time and limit how packet loss affects individual streams. The practical benefit depends on the route and network conditions, and may be more noticeable on high-latency or lossy connections. Neither protocol removes the propagation delay to a distant origin. web.dev’s CDN guidance covers these protocol and delivery tradeoffs.

Why isn’t every page or response cached?
Cacheability depends on what a response contains and how it is configured. Public static files are generally easier to cache. Responses marked private or no-store should not be treated as public cacheable content. Personalized pages and APIs need particular care: serving one visitor’s data to another would be a serious error.

Defaults are provider-specific. For example, Cloudflare’s default cache behavior, updated September 14, 2026, says HTML and JSON are not cached by default. When no Cache-Control or Expires header applies, its documented default edge TTLs are 120 minutes for selected 200, 206, and 301 responses; 20 minutes for 302 and 303; and 3 minutes for 404 and 410 responses. These are Cloudflare defaults, not universal CDN rules.

More edge locations can put a cache closer to more visitors, but may also split requests among more caches and lower the chance that a particular edge already has an object. A tiered cache can trade a little latency for a greater chance of a cache response. The best arrangement depends on the site’s audience, content, routing, and workload; no single CDN design is fastest everywhere. web.dev’s CDN overview discusses these tradeoffs.
What does a slow page’s timing tell you?
In browser developer tools, open the Network tab and inspect the slow requests. Break the delay into DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS handshake, Time to First Byte (TTFB), and total time. These measurements are clues, not definitive diagnoses. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guide maps common patterns to possible causes:

- BACKWARD COMPATIBLE - eero 7 is backward compatible with all previous generations of eero and compatible with eero Built-in on select Amazon Echo devices.
- High DNS time: Check for resolver delays or cache misses.
- High TCP connect time: The network path may be slow, or the service may be far away.
- High TLS time: Connection negotiation or certificate-related issues may be contributing.
- High TTFB: The server may be taking time to process the request, or an uncached request may be traveling to the origin.
- High total transfer time: The response may be large, or the connection may be transferring it slowly.
If a site exposes cache status, it can help explain a request. In Cloudflare’s terminology, HIT means served from its cache, MISS means fetched from the origin, DYNAMIC means not eligible under its current behavior, and BYPASS means caching was intentionally bypassed. A cache label describes the handling of that request; it does not by itself explain every delay in the page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen connection or TLS time is high, investigate the network path as well. Cloudflare recommends checking latency, jitter, and packet loss and using MTR to observe latency or loss at network hops. The geographically closest data center is not always selected: traffic engineering, ISP routing, peering, capacity, or reliability can affect the route.

How much difference can a nearby edge make?
Cloudflare offers a simplified illustration: for a New York visitor and an origin in Singapore, it estimates about 3,000 ms of transit time for five assets from the origin, compared with about 1,100 ms when static content is cached at an Atlanta edge. The example assumes 250 ms for New York-to-Singapore request travel and 50 ms for New York-to-Atlanta travel. These are assumptions in a vendor illustration—not current route measurements, a universal benchmark, or a promise about an actual site. Cloudflare’s CDN performance example provides the calculation.
What determines whether a distant site feels fast?
- Whether the requested content is cached at an edge serving your route.
- Whether the request is a cache miss or needs personalized processing at the origin.
- How DNS, ISP routing, peering, congestion, packet loss, and the selected CDN path affect the trip.
- Whether the browser can reuse a connection and how the site uses HTTP/2 or HTTP/3.
- How much work the page makes the browser do before it can show the content you need.
That is why the same website can feel immediate on one visit and slow on another. A warm cache and a responsive route help; a cache miss, distant origin work, or a busy or lossy network adds delay.
