A digital marketing agency can help a business pursue growth by planning online campaigns, measuring whether they attract the right visitors and customers, and adjusting the work against agreed goals. It can provide expertise and execution, but hiring an agency does not guarantee more sales or a particular growth rate. The value depends on whether its work is tied to outcomes that matter to your business.

Start with the business result you want

Before choosing channels or evaluating an agency, decide what expansion means for your business. It might mean more sales, qualified leads, website visits, or awareness among a defined audience. These goals call for different campaigns and different ways of judging results. Google Ads guidance recommends prioritizing campaign goals and selecting metrics that match them: Google Ads campaign goals and measurement.

For example, a campaign intended to increase sales should be judged by completed purchases and, where the business can measure it reliably, their financial impact—not by clicks alone. If the goal is awareness, visibility and reach are more relevant than treating sales as the only evidence of success.

Where an agency can support expansion

Plan and manage online advertising

An agency may help identify search terms and customer intent, develop advertising campaigns, and connect ads to relevant landing pages. It can monitor clicks, clickthrough rate, keyword performance, and search terms when the aim is to understand traffic. More clicks do not automatically mean more customers; the quality and relevance of the visits matter.

Set up measurement around valuable actions

Analytics and conversion tracking can help distinguish activity from outcomes. A conversion is an action the advertiser values, such as a purchase, newsletter signup, or request for information. Your business should define which actions count and ensure the tracking reflects them. For a fuller picture, compare campaign reports with reliable business records rather than assuming every recorded action became revenue.

Use results to refine campaigns

Campaign data can inform changes to keywords, messages, audiences, landing pages, or budget allocation. This is an iterative way to learn what is working toward the agreed goal, not proof that a particular agency will cause growth. A useful reporting conversation explains what changed, what the available data shows, and what the agency proposes to adjust next.

Organize and follow up on leads

If inquiries are a meaningful conversion, a customer relationship management (CRM) or email marketing system may help the business organize and follow up with prospects. This is most useful when there is a clear process for handling inquiries; collecting contact details without timely, relevant follow-up does not by itself create customers.

Choose metrics that fit the goal

Business goal Useful measures What to watch for
Increase website traffic Clicks, clickthrough rate, keyword performance, and search terms Traffic volume does not establish that visitors are potential customers.
Generate leads or sales Completed actions the business values, their quality, and financial impact where measurable Make sure the tracked action corresponds to a real business outcome.
Improve traffic quality Whether visitors become buyers or qualified leads Google’s small-business guide illustrates the distinction with four buyers from one referral source versus 50 window shoppers from another; this is an example, not a benchmark: Google’s small-business guide.
Build awareness Measures tied to visibility and reach Awareness measures should not be presented as evidence of sales.

Evaluate the agency’s approach before committing

There is no single agency-selection checklist established by the cited guidance, but its emphasis on goals and measurement suggests practical questions to ask before agreeing to work:

  • Which business goal will the work pursue, and how will success be measured?
  • Which actions will count as conversions, and how will tracking be checked?
  • What work is included—such as campaign planning, advertising, landing pages, analytics, or lead follow-up?
  • How often will results be reported, and what will the report connect to business outcomes?
  • If performance misses the agreed goal, how will the agency diagnose the issue and decide what to change?

Ask for a clear scope and a way to assess progress rather than relying on broad promises. The available evidence does not establish typical agency fees, contract terms, or that agencies generally outperform in-house teams, so those points should be evaluated for your specific proposal and circumstances.

Keep advertising claims and endorsements credible

Any marketing material created for your business—including testimonials, influencer content, incentivized reviews, and case studies—needs careful handling. The Federal Trade Commission says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based: FTC advertising and marketing guidance.

The FTC’s revised Endorsement Guides, announced in 2023, say endorsements should reflect the endorser’s honest opinion and cannot be used to make claims the marketer could not legally make. A connection that could affect how consumers evaluate an endorsement should be clearly and conspicuously disclosed. See the FTC Endorsement Guides guidance.
