A 2022 Chemical Communications report identified C70H6, a hydrofullerene containing two heptagons, in soot made by low-pressure combustion. The molecule has the same unusual heptagonal carbon cage previously observed in the chlorine derivative C70Cl6 from carbon-arc products. These are different compounds: the connection is their shared cage framework. The authors describe C70H6 as the first nonclassical fullerene reported as isolable from both combustion and carbon-arc production.
What the 2022 report actually discovered
Fullerenes are closed carbon cages built mainly from five- and six-membered rings. A conventional fullerene follows the familiar pattern of 12 pentagons surrounded by hexagons. A cage containing a seven-membered ring, or heptagon, is called nonclassical because it departs from that standard pattern.
The compound reported in 2022 is C70H6. Its carbon framework contains two heptagons, so it is often described as a double-heptagon or diheptagon fullerene. Six hydrogen atoms are attached to the C70 cage, making it a hydrofullerene rather than an unsubstituted C70 cage.

That wording matters. C70H6 and C70Cl6 are not the same molecule and should not be treated as interchangeable samples. One carries hydrogen substituents; the other carries chlorine. What they share is the underlying carbon-cage topology.
Why two heptagons are significant
Heptagons change the cage topology
Replacing a six-membered ring with a seven-membered ring changes how neighboring carbon bonds are arranged and how curvature is distributed across the cage. In a classical fullerene, pentagons provide much of the curvature needed to close the shell. Inserting heptagons introduces a nonclassical topological feature that can create strain and alter the cage’s electronic and chemical behavior.
The C70H6 structure is therefore not simply a larger version of a familiar spherical fullerene. It is a distinct carbon framework whose stability depends on the complete arrangement of pentagons, hexagons and heptagons, together with the positions of the six hydrogen atoms.
“Double-heptagon” describes the carbon skeleton
The prefix “dihept” refers to two heptagons in the cage. It does not indicate two separate molecules, two hydrogen pairs or a mixture of isomers. In the 2022 report, the two heptagons belong to one C70 carbon framework.
How combustion enters the story
Low-pressure combustion can generate soot containing a complex mixture of carbon clusters, cages and partially hydrogenated species. At the molecular level, the flame creates reactive carbon fragments; some can grow, rearrange and close into fullerene-like shells before they are removed from the hot reaction zone. Hydrogen-containing species may terminate reactive sites, producing hydrofullerenes such as C70H6.

For C70H6, however, the abstract does not specify the fuel mixture, pressure, temperature profile or residence time used in the 2022 experiment. Those details should not be borrowed from other combustion studies. The safe description is simply that the compound was isolated from low-pressure combustion soot.
Combustion soot is not a single product. It contains many carbon structures, so finding one unusual fullerene requires extraction, separation and structural identification. Isolation demonstrates that the molecule survives long enough, and in sufficient amount, to be separated from the soot mixture; it does not mean the combustion process produces only that cage.
C70H6 and C70Cl6: same cage, different derivatives
| Feature | C70H6 | D ihept-C70Cl6 |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon cage | C70 cage containing two heptagons | Reportedly the same double-heptagon C70 cage |
| Attached atoms | Six hydrogen atoms | Six chlorine atoms |
| Compound class | Hydrofullerene | Chlorinated fullerene |
| Production context in the cited reports | Isolated from low-pressure combustion soot | Previously identified in carbon-arc products |
| Relationship | Shared carbon-cage topology; not chemical identity | |
The shared cage gives researchers a useful cross-route comparison. It shows that an unusual carbon framework can appear in chemically different production environments and can be stabilized by different substituents. It does not establish that the two routes have the same reaction mechanism, yield, selectivity or operating conditions.
The earlier C66H4 combustion example
The C70H6 finding belongs to a broader line of work on nonclassical fullerenes formed in combustion. In 2019, an ACS paper reported C66H4 from low-pressure combustion of a benzene–acetylene–oxygen mixture. This is a separate experiment and a different molecule.
The reported C66H4 cage has point-group symmetry C2v, two heptagons and two pairs of fused pentagons. Four hydrogen atoms are attached at the common vertices of those fused pentagon pairs. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to identify the structure.

What “first” means in the 2022 paper
The authors’ novelty claim is narrow: they call C70H6 the first nonclassical fullerene isolable from both carbon-arc and combustion products. This does not mean it was the first fullerene with a heptagon, the first nonclassical carbon cage, or the first fullerene made by combustion.
Earlier work had already established heptagon-containing fullerene chemistry in carbon-arc products. A 2011 Nature Communications report described hepta-C68Cl6 and its extraction from soot followed by multistage high-performance liquid chromatography purification. The 2022 C70H6 report extends the cross-route record by connecting a combustion-isolated hydrofullerene to a cage previously seen in chlorinated carbon-arc material.
How the structures are established
Isolation is only the first step
Soot contains many fullerene sizes and derivatives. Researchers must first extract soluble carbon species and separate closely related compounds, commonly with chromatographic methods. A claim that a particular formula was “found in soot” therefore refers to a purified molecular species, not an inspection of raw soot.
Formula and cage assignment are different questions
A mass measurement can support a molecular formula such as C70H6, but formula alone does not reveal where the heptagons are located. Several cage arrangements can share the same elemental composition. Structural assignment requires data that distinguish the connectivity and three-dimensional geometry of the carbon framework.

For C70H6, the authors state that the compound was unambiguously characterized and that its cage matches the one in dihept-C70Cl6. The available abstract does not provide enough detail to summarize every analytical method or experimental parameter, so those should be taken from the full paper rather than inferred.
For C66H4, the 2019 report specifically identifies single-crystal X-ray diffraction as the method that established its structure. That is a separate evidence record and should not be presented as the characterization method for C70H6.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What may be happening during combustion—and what remains uncertain
A plausible conceptual sequence is carbon-fragment formation, cage growth or rearrangement, closure of a curved shell, and termination of reactive sites by hydrogen. Such a sequence explains why hydrogenated cages can appear in a combustion environment, but it is a framework for thinking, not a demonstrated step-by-step mechanism for C70H6.
The C66H4 paper provides an explicit example of the distinction. Its density-functional-theory calculations suggest that in situ hydrogenation could stabilize the unusual cage. “Suggests” is important: a calculated pathway or stabilization effect does not by itself prove which transient species formed in the flame or how fast each step occurred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor C70H6, the cited summary does not settle whether the heptagonal cage forms directly in the flame, rearranges from another carbon cluster, or is stabilized after formation by hydrogen addition. Nor does it establish how pressure, fuel composition or quench rate controls the product distribution.

What the finding does—and does not—show
Established by the reports
- C70H6 is a hydrofullerene with two heptagons in its C70 cage.
- The molecule was isolated from low-pressure combustion soot.
- The reported C70H6 cage is the same heptagonal cage as that in dihept-C70Cl6 from carbon-arc products.
- The 2022 authors describe it as the first nonclassical fullerene isolable from both carbon-arc and combustion products.
- Nonclassical combustion products also include the separately reported C66H4 cage.
Not established by the cited summaries
- A universal combustion recipe for making C70H6.
- The yield, selectivity or production rate of the 2022 process.
- A complete, experimentally verified formation mechanism.
- Commercial availability or a practical device application.
- Interchangeability of C70H6 and C70Cl6.
Why this matters for fullerene chemistry
The result links two difficult areas of carbon-cluster chemistry: making nonclassical cages and recovering them from chemically different high-energy environments. A shared cage observed in hydrogenated and chlorinated derivatives gives researchers a structural reference point when comparing combustion and carbon-arc products.
It also shows why fullerene research cannot be reduced to carbon count alone. C70H6 and C66H4 both contain two heptagons, yet their carbon counts, hydrogen patterns and overall cage structures differ. Conversely, C70H6 and C70Cl6 share a cage but differ in substituents and production history. Formula, topology, derivative and synthesis route each describe a different part of the chemical identity.

For readers asking how combustion can produce a double-heptagon fullerene, the most accurate answer is: under low-pressure conditions, combustion soot can contain rare carbon cages that survive extraction and purification, and C70H6 is a documented example. The broad physical picture is understandable, but the detailed pathway and operating recipe remain specific questions for the primary paper rather than conclusions that can be inferred from the headline result.
