Butterflies and humans both build color from light-sensitive receptors, but they do it with different visual hardware. Humans use a vertebrate retina with three main cone classes—short-, medium- and long-wavelength sensitive—plus rods. Butterflies use compound eyes made of ommatidia, and many species have six or more spectrally distinct photoreceptor classes, sometimes including ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity.
That does not mean every butterfly sees “more colors” or has better vision. Receptor counts describe the signals entering the nervous system, not the number of colors an animal consciously experiences. Species differ substantially, and the best-studied example, the Japanese yellow swallowtail (Papilio xuthus), cannot stand in for all butterflies.
The short answer
Butterfly vision differs from human vision in three fundamental ways:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Eye structure: humans have a single camera-type eye with a retinal cone mosaic; butterflies have compound eyes built from many ommatidia.
- Spectral sampling: humans typically have three cone classes, while butterfly retinas commonly contain six or more receptor classes, with combinations that can extend into UV.
- Variation: butterfly receptor systems range from only a few classes in some species to many more in others, and males and females can differ.
In laboratory tests, Papilio xuthus distinguished wavelength changes as small as 1–2 nanometres in three parts of the spectrum. A receptor-noise model fit those results best when it used UV, blue, proximal-green and red receptors, leading the authors to describe the animal as potentially tetrachromatic. “Potentially” matters: the model identifies channels that explain a behavior; it does not reveal the butterfly’s complete subjective color experience.

Different eyes sample light in different ways
Human eyes: three cone classes in a retinal mosaic
Human color vision usually begins with three cone classes. S cones are most sensitive to shorter wavelengths, M cones to medium wavelengths and L cones to longer wavelengths. Rods support vision in dim light but do not provide normal daylight color discrimination. Every retinal location receives a combination of cone signals, and the brain compares those signals to infer color.
David H. Brainard’s 2015 review, Color and the Cone Mosaic, emphasizes that trichromacy is a statement about the information available from cone classes and how the brain interprets it. It is not simply a count of three “color pixels.” At fine spatial scales, the perceptual result depends on where cones are located and how neural circuits combine their measurements.
Butterfly eyes: many ommatidia
A butterfly eye is compound. Its surface is divided into ommatidia, repeating optical units that each collect light from a small direction. Photoreceptor cells inside those units convert light into neural signals. The resulting eye is a mosaic of sampling channels rather than one continuous vertebrate retina.
The number and spectral identity of those channels are not fixed across butterflies. Kentaro Arikawa’s 2017 review in The Journal of Physiology contrasts the usual three human cone classes with butterfly retinas that typically have six or more photoreceptor classes. Some receptors are tuned to overlapping portions of the visible spectrum; others can be sensitive to UV or have broad spectral responses. Pigments inside photoreceptors can also filter incoming light and change the effective sensitivity of a channel.
Papilio xuthus: a detailed case study
Nine photoreceptors in each ommatidium
In the Japanese yellow swallowtail, each ommatidium contains nine photoreceptor cells. The eye is organized into three fixed combinations of spectrally distinct ommatidia. This arrangement gives the butterfly multiple, regularly distributed ways to compare wavelengths across its visual field.

Six described spectral receptor classes
Six spectral classes have been described in Papilio xuthus:
| Receptor class | What the label indicates |
|---|---|
| Ultraviolet | Strongest response in ultraviolet wavelengths, below the range humans can see. |
| Violet | Sensitivity shifted toward violet wavelengths. |
| Blue | Blue-region sensitivity. |
| Green | Green-region sensitivity; the species includes more than one green-related channel. |
| Red | Longer-wavelength sensitivity extending into the red region. |
| Broad-band | A comparatively wide spectral response rather than a narrow peak. |
These are physiological receptor categories. They should not be read as six independently perceived primary colors. Signals from several receptors are combined by later neural processing, and a broad-band receptor may contribute to brightness or contrast as well as to color comparisons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan butterflies see colors humans cannot?
Some butterflies can detect ultraviolet wavelengths that humans cannot, but “all butterflies see UV” is not justified. A UV receptor is documented in Papilio xuthus and in other examples discussed by Arikawa. The same review also reports substantial diversity in butterfly receptor systems, so UV sensitivity must be established for a named species rather than assumed from the word “butterfly.”
Human S cones respond to the shortest wavelengths available to ordinary human vision, but the eye’s cornea and lens absorb much of the UV that reaches the outside of the eye. A butterfly receptor with UV sensitivity therefore samples information outside the normal human visual range. That information can alter the contrast of flowers or other surfaces even when two objects look similar to a person.
UV sensitivity is a property of a receptor channel, not proof that a butterfly experiences a single extra “UV color.” The nervous system could use UV signals in opponent comparisons, brightness estimates, pattern recognition or several of these functions at once.

Do butterflies see more colors than humans?
There is no scientifically defensible universal yes-or-no answer. A butterfly may have more receptor classes than a human, but receptor-class count is not the same as the number of consciously perceived colors.
Why receptor counts do not equal color counts
Color is computed from relative receptor activity. In humans, the brain compares S, M and L cone responses and integrates them with spatial and contextual information. The same principle applies to butterflies: downstream neurons can combine several photoreceptor signals, discard some information, or use a channel for brightness or edge contrast rather than an independent hue dimension.
Brainard’s account of human cone mosaics is a useful warning against treating the retina as a direct color palette. A six-class butterfly retina supplies a richer set of measurements, but the animal’s experienced color space would still depend on its neural wiring and behavior.
What the Papilio model suggests
Behavioral wavelength-discrimination data from Papilio xuthus were best fit by a receptor-noise model using UV, blue, proximal-green and red receptors. The authors therefore describe the system as potentially tetrachromatic: four channels appear sufficient to explain the tested discrimination performance.
This is a model-based inference, not a claim that the butterfly has exactly four conscious primary colors. The species has six described receptor classes, yet the particular task and model relied on four of them. Other behaviors, lighting conditions or neural measurements could reveal different channel combinations.

How precise is butterfly color discrimination?
In experiments summarized by Arikawa’s 2017 review, Papilio xuthus distinguished wavelength differences of about 1–2 nm in three regions of the spectrum. The review compares this performance with human wavelength discrimination, but the result has a narrow scope:
- It concerns one species, not butterflies as a whole.
- It applies to three tested wavelength regions, not every color.
- It measures a trained behavioral choice, not a complete map of subjective color experience.
- Thresholds can change with light intensity, background, adaptation and the exact experimental design.
A small wavelength threshold means that the animal can reliably tell two tested stimuli apart under those conditions. It does not mean that every nearby wavelength is experienced as a separately named color, nor that the butterfly has superior vision for all visual tasks.
Butterfly visual systems vary dramatically
Species comparisons show why broad claims are risky. The 2017 review reports three receptor classes in the painted lady, Vanessa cardui, and 15 in Graphium sarpedon. Some species also show differences between males and females. Evolution can tune a visual system to a species’ ecology, activity pattern and the signals it needs to detect.
| Example | Reported receptor information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Humans | Typically three cone classes, plus rods | A trichromatic vertebrate system; brain processing determines perceived color. |
| Papilio xuthus | Six described spectral classes; nine photoreceptors per ommatidium; three fixed ommatidial combinations | A detailed case of a multi-class compound-eye system, not a universal butterfly template. |
| Vanessa cardui | Three receptor classes reported | Shows that some butterflies have fewer classes than the typical six-or-more comparison. |
| Graphium sarpedon | 15 receptor classes reported | Shows how far receptor diversity can extend in another species. |
The figures above come from specified species and studies. They are not population averages for all butterflies, and they do not rank species on a single scale of “better” vision.
Are butterfly eyes better than human eyes?
Only if “better” is tied to a particular job. Butterfly eyes can provide access to UV wavelengths and, in some species and conditions, very fine wavelength discrimination. Human eyes provide a different combination of spectral channels, visual optics and neural processing. Neither system wins every comparison.

The available evidence for this topic is strongest for receptor structure and selected color-discrimination experiments. It does not establish a comprehensive butterfly-versus-human ranking for spatial acuity, polarization sensitivity, motion vision or low-light performance. Those abilities should not be inferred from receptor counts.
A more accurate formulation is: some butterflies sample a broader or more finely divided spectrum than humans, while their visual systems remain species-specific and their perceived colors cannot be read directly from the number of receptors.
Why this matters to a butterfly
“Butterflies use colour vision when searching for flowers,” Arikawa writes. Flower-searching illustrates the practical value of comparing spectral channels. A butterfly can use differences in wavelength and contrast to separate a flower from leaves or to distinguish targets under changing illumination. A UV channel may add contrast that is invisible to a human observer.
The benefit is informational, not simply numerical. A receptor that overlaps another in sensitivity can improve discrimination when their signals are compared. A broad-band receptor can contribute a stable brightness reference. The ommatidial arrangement can distribute these measurements across the visual field. Which signals matter most depends on the species and task.
How to read claims about butterfly color vision
- Check the species. A result for Papilio xuthus should not be presented as a result for every butterfly.
- Separate anatomy from behavior. A measured receptor class shows that light can be detected; a discrimination experiment shows that an animal can use a difference in a particular task.
- Look for the wavelength range. “Better discrimination” may apply only to three tested regions or a specific intensity and background.
- Do not equate receptor number with perceived color number. Neural processing determines how signals become visual experience.
- Treat UV as species-specific. Confirm that the named butterfly has a UV-sensitive receptor before making the claim.
Bottom line
Humans typically see through three cone classes in a vertebrate retina. Butterflies use compound eyes whose ommatidia can contain many spectrally distinct photoreceptors, including UV-sensitive channels in some species. The Japanese yellow swallowtail demonstrates six receptor classes, nine photoreceptors per ommatidium and 1–2 nm discrimination in selected tests, but its model-based “potential tetrachromacy” is not a universal butterfly rule. Butterfly vision is diverse and specialized—not simply human vision with more colors.
