Butterflies do not have one standard color-vision system, while the honeybee is a well-studied ultraviolet–blue–green trichromat. Many examined butterflies have six or more photoreceptor classes, and some species combine ultraviolet, violet, blue, green and red-sensitive channels. That broader receptor repertoire can support finer wavelength discrimination in particular species, but it does not justify saying that every butterfly sees more colors, sees red, or has better vision than every bee.

The short answer: butterflies are more varied than honeybees

Honeybee color vision is commonly described as trichromatic. A major review reports three honeybee photoreceptor sensitivity peaks: 340 nanometres (ultraviolet), 463 nm (blue) and 530 nm (green). Honeybees therefore detect ultraviolet light that humans cannot see, but they are insensitive to red wavelengths.

Butterflies are not a single visual type. Kentaro Arikawa’s 2017 review found that butterfly retinas typically contain six or more photoreceptor classes with distinct spectral sensitivities, although the exact number and wavelength peaks differ among species. Some studied butterflies have receptors extending from ultraviolet through red. Others lack one or more of those channels. The meaningful comparison is therefore species by species, using both the receptor measurements and behavioral tests of wavelength discrimination.

What a photoreceptor tells you—and what it does not

Receptors are sensitivity channels, not color names

A photoreceptor is a light-sensitive cell whose response varies with wavelength. A peak at 340 nm means that a receptor is most sensitive near ultraviolet light at that wavelength; it does not mean the animal experiences a single color called “340-nm purple.” The brain compares signals across receptor classes, and the resulting perception depends on how those signals are combined.

That is why it is inaccurate to say that a trichromatic honeybee sees only three colors or that a butterfly with six receptor classes sees six colors. Several receptors can contribute to one color decision, and the same receptor can participate in different decisions depending on the surrounding light and the animal’s neural processing.

Behavioral discrimination adds the missing evidence

Electrophysiology or optical measurements show which wavelengths stimulate a receptor. Training experiments can test whether an animal distinguishes two lights when brightness is controlled. Such tests establish wavelength discrimination rather than a response caused simply by one stimulus being brighter.

Models can then estimate how receptor signals might be combined. A model is an inference, not a direct measurement of subjective color experience. The tetrachromatic interpretation of the Japanese yellow swallowtail, Papilio xuthus, is an example of that distinction.

Honeybee color vision: the well-studied baseline

The three honeybee sensitivity peaks

Honeybee channel Reported peak Human comparison
Ultraviolet-sensitive 340 nm Below the human visible range
Blue-sensitive 463 nm Within the blue part of human vision
Green-sensitive 530 nm Near the green part of human vision

These values come from the 2011 review Honeybees as a Model for the Study of Visually Guided Flight, Navigation, and Biologically Inspired Robotics. They describe the honeybee, not every bee species. A bumblebee or another bee may have different sensitivity curves, and those differences should be measured rather than assumed away.

What “bees can see ultraviolet” means

Ultraviolet sensitivity means that ultraviolet radiation can activate a honeybee receptor and affect visual discrimination. It does not mean a bee sees a human-visible color that is merely “more purple.” Ultraviolet is outside the wavelength range detected by human cone photoreceptors, so photographs made with ordinary cameras cannot show a bee’s visual experience without specialized imaging and a chosen false-color representation.

Why “bees” should not be treated as one species

The 2010 study Photoreceptor Spectral Sensitivity in the Bumblebee, Bombus impatiens noted that full spectral-sensitivity data for that species were not available at the time. That limitation illustrates why honeybee measurements should not automatically be transferred to bumblebees, solitary bees or other bee lineages.

Why butterfly color vision varies so much

Many butterflies have six or more receptor classes

Arikawa’s 2017 review summarizes a pattern unlike the honeybee baseline: butterfly retinas typically have six or more photoreceptor classes, each with its own spectral sensitivity. Some classes are narrow-band receptors tuned to a relatively limited region; others are broad-band receptors that respond over a wider range. The combination differs by species, and a larger number of classes does not automatically produce a larger set of consciously experienced colors.

“Unlike the trichromatic retinas of humans (blue, green and red cones; plus rods) and honeybees (ultraviolet, blue and green photoreceptors), butterfly retinas typically have six or more photoreceptor classes with distinct spectral sensitivities.” — Kentaro Arikawa, The eyes and vision of butterflies, 2017

Papilio xuthus: a detailed example of extended sensitivity

The Japanese yellow swallowtail has been studied in more detail than most butterflies. The review describes ultraviolet-, violet-, blue-, green- and red-sensitive receptors, along with a broad-band receptor. In behavioral tests, the butterfly discriminated wavelength differences as small as 1–2 nm in three wavelength regions. That is a measure of fine discrimination under the tested conditions, not a universal threshold for all butterflies.

A model using the ultraviolet, blue, green and red receptor signals inferred tetrachromatic color vision in Papilio xuthus. “Inferred” matters: the result depends on the model of signal combination and should not be rewritten as proof that every butterfly is tetrachromatic.

Monarchs and viceroys show species-level differences

Butterfly Receptor peaks or contrast reported What the result establishes
Monarch Approximately 360, 450 and 550 nm Three receptor peaks reported in the 1986 Optica conference report
Viceroy Lacks the 550-nm receptor type in the cited comparison; has a type peaking near 515 nm A different receptor complement from the monarch in that comparison

These numbers come from the 1986 report Butterfly color vision: spectral properties of photoreceptors and wing patterns. They are species-specific measurements, not a template for all brush-footed butterflies or all butterflies with similar names.

Sex can change the result within a species

A 2021 behavioral study, True UV color vision in a female butterfly with two UV opsins, tested Heliconius erato, Heliconius melpomene and Eueides isabella. Among the tested H. erato butterflies, only females showed ultraviolet color vision. Both sexes in the tested species showed color vision in the blue range. This is evidence about the individuals and species tested, not a rule that female butterflies always see ultraviolet better than males.

Can butterflies see colors that bees cannot?

Ultraviolet: both groups can have access to it

The honeybee baseline includes a 340-nm ultraviolet receptor. The butterfly studies also include ultraviolet-sensitive receptors, so ultraviolet is not an exclusive butterfly capability. The important difference is often the number and tuning of channels used to analyze ultraviolet and neighboring wavelengths, not a simple yes-or-no division.

Red: some butterflies, but not all

Honeybees are insensitive to red wavelengths according to the cited review. Several butterfly species have been reported with red-sensitive receptors, including the red channel described for Papilio xuthus. However, the monarch and viceroy comparison demonstrates that even closely related butterflies can have different receptor peaks, and the available studies do not support the blanket statement that every butterfly sees red.

Fine wavelength differences: evidence is species-specific

The 1–2-nm discrimination reported for Papilio xuthus is unusually precise evidence from a particular behavioral study. It cannot be converted into a general claim that butterflies outperform bees at every color task. Comparable thresholds across the many bee and butterfly species have not been established as one common ranking experiment.

A fair comparison uses four separate axes

Comparison axis Honeybee evidence Butterfly evidence How to interpret it
Receptor classes Three commonly reported classes: ultraviolet, blue and green Six or more classes are typical in the reviewed butterfly literature, with species variation Class count indicates available channels, not a color count
Spectral coverage Peaks at 340, 463 and 530 nm; red-insensitive Some species have channels from ultraviolet through red; others differ Coverage must be reported for a named species
Wavelength discrimination The cited baseline gives receptor peaks, not one directly comparable universal threshold Papilio xuthus discriminated 1–2 nm differences in three regions under test conditions Behavioral thresholds are more informative than receptor count alone
Individual variation Honeybee figures should not be transferred to every bee species H. erato showed a sex-specific ultraviolet result in the 2021 study Species, sex and test design belong beside every claim
Evidence type Physiological review of spectral sensitivity Physiology, behavioral experiments and model-based interpretations Measured responses and inferred perception should be labeled differently

This framework prevents a common mistake: treating a larger receptor inventory as proof of superior visual acuity. Acuity concerns spatial detail, whereas the evidence here concerns spectral sensitivity and color discrimination. An animal can have many spectral channels without resolving finer spatial detail, and a three-channel system can still make effective color distinctions.

What these findings mean for interpreting animal-vision claims

Always name the species

Replace “butterflies see six colors” with a statement such as “the reviewed butterfly species had six or more receptor classes.” Replace “bees cannot see red” with “the honeybee is insensitive to red wavelengths in the cited review.” These small wording changes preserve the actual scope of the evidence.

Separate a receptor measurement from a perception claim

A receptor peak tells you where a cell is most sensitive. A trained-choice experiment tests whether an animal uses wavelength information in a task. A computational model proposes how channels may be combined. Those are three related but different levels of evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with human color labels

Terms such as blue, green, red and ultraviolet are convenient wavelength labels based partly on human vision. They help compare measurements, but they do not reveal what the animal’s internal color experience feels like. “Ultraviolet-sensitive” is therefore more precise than assigning a human color name to an ultraviolet signal.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Bees see only three colors.” The three honeybee receptor classes are input channels, not three named percepts.
  • “Every butterfly sees six colors.” Butterfly receptor classes vary, and class count is not a perceptual color count.
  • “Every butterfly sees red.” Red-sensitive receptors occur in some studied species, but the evidence is not universal.
  • “More receptors means better vision.” Receptor number does not by itself measure spatial acuity, color experience or performance on every task.
  • “A result in one sex applies to the species.” The Heliconius erato ultraviolet result was female-specific among the tested butterflies.
  • “Honeybee data represent all bees.” Bee species differ, and complete spectral data were specifically noted as unavailable for Bombus impatiens in the cited 2010 study.

Bottom line

Honeybees provide a clear baseline of ultraviolet-, blue- and green-sensitive photoreceptors, with peaks near 340, 463 and 530 nm and no sensitivity to red wavelengths in the cited review. Butterflies show a broader and more variable landscape: many studied species have six or more receptor classes, some include red-sensitive channels, and Papilio xuthus can distinguish 1–2-nm wavelength differences in tested regions. The accurate conclusion is not that butterflies universally see better. It is that butterfly color vision is more diverse, and any meaningful comparison must identify the species, sex, receptor measurements and behavioral evidence involved.
