A browser can convert a selected HEIC image to JPG without sending the image to a conversion server: a HEIC-capable decoder reads the file locally, then the browser encodes the decoded pixels as JPEG. That describes where the media conversion happens—not whether the web page makes other network requests. The distinction matters for privacy, compatibility, and what the resulting JPG preserves.
What “client-side” HEIC-to-JPG conversion means
A typical browser-side workflow accepts a local file, decodes its HEIC/HEIF image data, encodes the resulting pixels as JPEG, and offers the new file for download. The original media can stay on the device throughout that conversion if the page sends it to no backend.
JavaScript libraries make this approach possible. The heic2any project documentation describes conversion in the browser to JPEG, PNG, or GIF. heic-to documents browser conversion to JPEG or PNG using libheif. These examples establish that browser-side conversion is feasible; they do not establish which library a particular image tool uses or how that tool performs.

Why browser support still matters
Native HEIC/HEIF support varies by browser and version. A compatibility snapshot reports support in Safari beginning with version 17, while the Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera versions listed there do not natively support the format. Check the current HEIF compatibility table for the browser and device in question; support can change and may also depend on operating-system codecs.

- It allows converting single HEIC images or HEIC image collections.
- It's completely unlimited.
- Works without an internet connection.
A JavaScript decoder can provide a fallback where native decoding is unavailable, but merely finding that the browser exposes the ImageDecoder API does not prove it can decode HEIC. MDN describes ImageDecoder as a general encoded-image decoding interface; support for a particular image format is a separate matter. Testing an actual representative HEIC file is a stronger check than testing API availability alone.
What changes when HEIC becomes JPG
Metadata may be lost
Conversion does not necessarily carry over details embedded in the original image. The heic2any README says it is intended for viewing and does not focus on copying metadata from the source HEIC into its JPEG, GIF, or PNG output. If location, camera, or other metadata matters, do not assume the converted JPG retains it.

Multi-image files need deliberate handling
Some HEIC containers include multiple images, such as a burst or animation-like sequence. heic2any’s documentation discusses multi-image containers and distinguishes burst handling from animation. A tool’s behavior depends on its decoder and output choices, so check whether it exports one still image or handles additional images before relying on it for these files.
JPG is a convenience format, not an archival guarantee
This workflow is useful when an application or recipient needs a widely accepted JPEG. It is not evidence that the output preserves all source information or has equivalent image quality. Keep the original HEIC when fidelity, metadata, or future editing matters.

How to assess a “no upload” promise
“No upload” should describe the handling of the selected image: its bytes are decoded and re-encoded on the device and are not sent to a conversion backend. Choosing a browser-side library alone cannot establish that a deployed page has no other network activity. Analytics, third-party scripts, error reporting, or other page services may still make requests.
For a broader privacy claim, inspect the deployed page’s network requests and the behavior of its analytics, libraries, and error-reporting services. Avoid interpreting local conversion as proof that no data of any kind leaves the device. For example, the heic-web project describes its own local WebAssembly/canvas processing and says its service does not receive or convert user media; that project-specific statement does not establish how another site is deployed.

Choosing a browser-side conversion approach
| Approach | Documented output formats | Relevant consideration |
|---|---|---|
| heic2any | JPEG, PNG, GIF | Its documentation says converted output does not copy source metadata. |
| heic-to | JPEG, PNG | Its documentation describes browser conversion using libheif. |
Beyond output format, assess whether the approach works on the browsers and devices your users rely on, and how it handles multi-image files. Decoder download size, startup time, and memory consumption are also practical factors to measure on representative devices; the available project documentation does not establish comparative performance figures.

If it creates temporary object URLs or holds large buffers, it should release them when they are no longer needed. These are implementation considerations, not a guarantee about the internals of any particular image tool.

- AVIF image to JPEG converter
- JPEG image to HEIC/HEIF/AVIF converter

When this method is a good fit
- Use browser-side conversion when you need a convenient JPG and the tool’s supported browser and file behavior fits your needs.
- Keep the original HEIC if metadata, multi-image content, or archival preservation matters.
- Verify the deployed page’s network behavior if privacy depends on more than keeping the selected image away from a conversion backend.
