Browser-based games run in one of two broad ways: they are built for browser technologies, or a browser emulator runs software originally made for another system. That difference affects compatibility, speed, controls, and whether progress survives. A game’s behavior depends on its implementation, emulator, browser, device, and hosting setup—not simply on the fact that it opens in a browser.
How do browser-based games run?
A web-native game is designed to run using browser capabilities such as JavaScript, HTML5, and WebAssembly. A legacy game, by contrast, may run inside an emulator adapted for the browser. In that case, the emulator reproduces enough of the original system for its software to run, while the browser supplies the environment for execution, display, sound, and input.
Games built for the web
Web-native games are not necessarily simple or lightweight: their demands depend on their design and the browser features they use. Ren’Py, for example, offers a web build compiled to WebAssembly so that much of its engine runs in the browser. Its documentation also describes browser-specific constraints: the web port does not support multithreading or arbitrary networking, and supported media formats and browser features limit playback. Loading images can cause frame-rate glitches because the web port cannot use the background preloading available in desktop and mobile versions. Ren’Py’s Web / HTML5 documentation, version 8.5.4, identifies recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari as target evergreen browsers, while warning that modern features the game needs can still be blocked or disabled.
Older games running in an emulator
Emulation adds a software layer that imitates a game’s original hardware or system. The Internet Archive describes its Internet Arcade as using JSMESS, a JavaScript port of MESS/MAME, without a separate plugin. RomM documents another approach: EmulatorJS runs RetroArch cores compiled to WebAssembly using Emscripten. These are examples, not a universal recipe; not every browser game is emulated, and not every emulator uses the same core or browser technology. The Internet Archive’s Internet Arcade help page is dated 2018, so its service-specific details should be read in that context.

The browser is also a constrained environment
A browser application operates within browser security and capability limits. Ren’Py’s web port, for instance, cannot use its multithreading functions, including renpy.invoke_in_thread() and Python’s threading module, and it does not support arbitrary networking. A 2025 overview from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) notes that browser emulators have less access than other emulation approaches to host peripherals, complex hardware, and networking; the extra browser and local-environment layers can also constrain performance, especially for newer systems. CLIR’s browser-emulation overview describes broad tendencies, not a guarantee for every game or today’s browser.
Why can performance and compatibility vary?
“Runs in a browser” does not promise identical speed or compatibility across devices. A game may depend on CPU or graphics capacity, available memory, browser features, and the emulator or core selected. Hosting choices also matter: the browser may execute the game locally, but the available sources do not establish a basis for comparing that with remote game streaming.

- System demands: Emulating a more demanding system can overwhelm an older or less powerful device. RomM’s EmulatorJS guide specifically warns that demanding Dreamcast, Saturn, and PSP cores may struggle on such devices. RomM’s EmulatorJS guide is project documentation on its main branch, so implementation details may change.
- Browser support: A game can fail or behave differently if a required feature is missing, disabled, or blocked. The Internet Archive’s 2018 help documentation lists disabled JavaScript, JavaScript blockers, outdated browsers, and low memory or disk space as possible causes of failure or poor operation in its Internet Arcade. These are examples tied to that service’s documentation, not a complete diagnosis for every current browser game.
- Timing and compatibility: The Internet Archive’s 2018 MS-DOS emulation help page says its emulator can be CPU-intensive, that older browsers may differ substantially in speed, and that some games can run too fast because they rely on timing loops. It also identifies compatibility problems as a possible cause of unusually slow operation. The MS-DOS emulation help page documents that service’s experience, not a universal browser rule.
- Security requirements for a specific core: RomM’s guide says its PSP core needs SharedArrayBuffer in a secure, cross-origin-isolated context, so that integration requires HTTPS. This is a requirement for the documented PSP setup, not for every emulator.
What to try when a game runs too slowly
- Check the game’s and player’s requirements. Confirm that your browser is supported and that any required browser features are available. For a particular emulator library, check its own setup guide rather than assuming a requirement for one core applies to all games.
- Reduce other system load. Close demanding browser tabs or applications and try again; limited CPU or memory can affect local emulation. The sources do not establish a single setting that fixes slow performance across games.
- Check whether the game or emulator offers a different compatibility option. A core or implementation change can affect speed, but it can also affect save-state compatibility. Keep that trade-off in mind before switching.
- Update or change browsers only when the player’s documentation supports it. Browser versions and features can matter, but a newer browser is not guaranteed to solve every performance or compatibility problem.
Why is the program running way too fast?
Some older games use timing loops that do not behave as intended in an emulated environment. The Internet Archive’s DOS emulation documentation identifies this as one possible cause in its service. Look for a speed or timing control in the specific player’s instructions if one is documented; there is no universal browser setting established by these sources that corrects every game.
How do browser games save progress?
Save behavior varies by game and player. An in-game save uses the game’s own save system. A save state captures the emulator or runtime at a particular point. A player may also store progress in the browser or synchronize files to a server. These approaches are not interchangeable, and none should be assumed to persist until the player’s instructions confirm it.

| Example | Documented save behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Ren’Py web build | Provides import and export options for saves and persistent data; export creates a downloadable zip. | Download and retain the export if you want a backup or need to move data between a browser and desktop game. Ren’Py documentation. |
| RomM with EmulatorJS | Prompts users to select an existing save or state and writes in-emulator saves and states back to the server. | Server synchronization is specific to this integration; its guide warns that a save state may not load after changing emulator cores. RomM documentation. |
| Internet Archive MS-DOS player | The 2018 help page says the player offered no way to save a game at the time of that documentation. | Do not assume progress will be preserved in that player; its documented behavior may not describe later changes. Internet Archive help page. |
| Browser emulation generally | CLIR’s 2025 overview says many browser emulators do not preserve state or storage across refresh; it describes Internet Archive collections as not storing information across sessions. | Treat persistence as player-specific and verify it before relying on a session continuing later. CLIR overview. |
How to protect a save
- Check the specific game or player’s save instructions before playing for a long session. Look for an in-game save menu, an export or download option, or a documented sync feature.
- Use explicit export or download options when available. Save the resulting file somewhere you control, rather than relying only on browser storage.
- Keep a backup before changing devices, clearing site data, or changing emulator settings. Browser-local persistence may not survive refreshes or storage cleanup, and a server-sync feature is not universal.
- Keep the same emulator core when resuming a core-dependent save state. RomM’s guide warns that states may be unloadable after switching cores; a state is not necessarily portable between different emulation setups.
Do you need a controller?
No. A keyboard or touch input may be enough, depending on the game. A USB or Bluetooth gamepad is optional and useful only if the specific game and player support compatible input. webЯcade documents browser use of JavaScript, WebAssembly, HTML5 gamepad and audio interfaces, and support for Bluetooth and USB gamepads across its listed device families. Its documentation advises checking the individual application’s keyboard or gamepad mappings and platform guide. webЯcade documentation displays a 2026 copyright; its listed support should not be taken as a guarantee for every browser game.

A quick check before you start
- Is this a web-native game or legacy software running in an emulator?
- Does the player document supported browsers, device requirements, or a particular core?
- Does the game save in-game, offer an export, sync to a server, or use a save state?
- Will the save still be available after refresh, storage cleanup, or a device change?
- If you use a save state, do you need to keep the same emulator core?
- Are the keyboard, touch, or controller mappings supported by this title?
