Browser-based ad blockers use two different techniques: they can cancel a matching network request before the browser downloads it, or hide an advertising element after it has already been placed in the page. Those actions are related but not interchangeable. A hidden ad may still have generated a request, while an unrecognized ad can load because no active rule matches it.
The practical result is useful but limited protection. Filter lists, browser extension APIs, site changes, product defaults and exceptions all affect what gets blocked. No blocker can promise that every advertisement or tracking technique disappears on every website.
The short answer
- Network filtering compares a page request with active rules and can cancel a matching script, image, frame, stylesheet or other resource before it is fetched.
- Cosmetic filtering uses page selectors to hide a matching element in the document. It changes what you see, but it does not by itself stop the remote request.
- Filter lists contain the patterns that identify advertising, analytics and tracking resources. Coverage depends on whether a list recognizes the particular URL, domain, request context or page element.
- Exceptions and scope rules can allow a request that would otherwise be blocked, or limit a rule to particular domains or request types.
- Browser and product differences matter. Extension APIs, Manifest V3 support, filter-list controls and default settings differ between browsers and blockers.
That is why a blocker can remove an empty advertising slot yet still allow its request, or stop a known ad script while missing a newly changed version of the same service.
What happens when a page loads
A modern page is assembled from many requests. The document can ask for JavaScript, images, fonts, stylesheets, embedded frames and data from the site itself or from other domains. A blocker that has network-filtering capability examines those requests while the browser is preparing the page.

- The browser identifies a resource request. The request has information such as its URL, the page that initiated it, its destination type and whether it is third-party in relation to the page.
- Active filter rules are checked. The blocker compares that request information with the lists enabled in its settings. Rules can target a URL pattern, a domain, a request type or a combination of conditions.
- A matching network rule cancels the request. The browser does not download the matched resource, so code in that resource cannot run and an image or frame cannot be fetched.
- Nonmatching requests continue normally. If no rule recognizes the request, the browser can retrieve it. The page may then display an ad, run analytics or create a tracking connection.
Adblock Plus describes its extension as intercepting browser network requests and blocking those that match active filter-list rules. The uBlock Origin project describes the purpose of a network filter as preventing a request from being made to a remote server. These descriptions explain the important distinction: network blocking acts before download, not after an element is visible.
Network filtering is selective, not a universal detector
A rule does not understand every possible advertising or tracking technique. It recognizes the patterns its author included. A list might identify a known advertising domain, a script name or a third-party request made in a particular context. A site that changes its URL, serves content from a first-party address or introduces a new delivery method may no longer match an existing rule.
Rules can also be intentionally narrow. A third-party condition may block a tracker when it is requested by another site but leave a first-party resource alone. Domain scoping can apply a rule only on selected websites. These conditions reduce collateral damage, but they also mean that the same resource can be treated differently on two pages.
Cosmetic filtering acts on the page
Cosmetic filters use selectors to hide or remove matching elements in the page’s document structure. They can remove an advertising container, a sponsored label or an empty placeholder when a network rule cannot identify the underlying content. The browser may still have requested the frame, script or data that supplied that element.
Cosmetic filtering improves the visible layout, but the uBlock Origin documentation explicitly distinguishes it from network filtering and says cosmetic filters do not provide privacy protection on their own. A request that already happened can still have reached the remote server even if its resulting element is hidden immediately afterward.

How filter lists and exceptions shape the result
A filter list is a maintained collection of rules. The list may be published by a vendor, a community or an individual user, and a blocker can often enable several lists at once. Adblock Plus identifies EasyList as an advertising list and EasyPrivacy as a list aimed at third-party tracking domains, fingerprinting scripts and analytics requests. Users can add, remove or modify lists in that product.
| Rule or mechanism | What it matches | What the browser experiences | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network filter | A request URL and its context | The request can be cancelled before download | Only recognized patterns are affected |
| Cosmetic filter | A matching page element or selector | The element is hidden or removed visually | The underlying request may already have occurred |
| Exception filter | A request or element that should be allowed | A previously matching item is permitted | An exception can restore content or tracking that a broader rule would have stopped |
| Domain or context condition | A rule only when used on selected domains or request contexts | Blocking changes according to the page and request type | A rule may not apply outside its specified scope |
Why broad rules can break legitimate content
Pattern matching can produce false positives. Adblock Plus’s filter-writing documentation demonstrates a broad adv pattern that also matches a legitimate page named advice.html. An exception or a narrower condition can restore that page while retaining the intended blocking rule.
The same principle applies to a script, image or API endpoint that happens to share a word with an advertising pattern. A blocker is following its rules, not judging whether a resource is morally an ad. Users may need to narrow a rule, add an exception or allowlist a site when legitimate functionality disappears.
What ad blockers can block
Recognized advertising resources
When an advertising script, image, frame or data request matches an active network rule, the blocker can prevent that resource from being fetched. The visible result may be a blank area, a rearranged layout or no advertising container at all, depending on how the page was built.

Recognized third-party tracking requests
Privacy-oriented lists can target known analytics endpoints, tracking domains, fingerprinting scripts and other third-party resources. Blocking them can reduce requests sent to those services, but list coverage remains the deciding factor. A tracker that uses a different domain or an unrecognized implementation may still load.
Page elements that can be selected
Cosmetic rules can hide an element when its structure or attributes are known. This is useful for placeholders, inline promotions and containers whose content cannot be cleanly stopped by a network rule. It is a visual operation rather than proof that the server received no request.

What they cannot promise to block
- Every advertisement. A resource that does not match an active rule can load. Advertising methods change, and filter lists require updates to recognize new patterns.
- Every tracker. Blocking known tracking domains or scripts does not establish that all tracking has stopped. A site may use a different endpoint, a first-party implementation or a technique outside the enabled lists.
- Requests hidden by cosmetic rules. Hiding an element does not undo a request that the browser already made.
- Content that is indistinguishable from ordinary page data. A rule-based extension cannot reliably classify every resource without risking legitimate content.
- A fixed success percentage. The official materials for the mechanisms described here do not establish an independent, current blocking rate across websites, so a universal percentage would be misleading.
These are limitations of rule-based matching and browser capabilities, not evidence that a particular extension is malfunctioning.
Why you may still see ads with a blocker enabled
- The request did not match an active list. The ad may use a new URL, a different domain or a context that the rule does not cover.
- Only a cosmetic rule applied. You may see the ad disappear while the underlying request remains, or you may still see an ad that has no matching cosmetic selector.
- An exception allowed it. A site-specific exception, a broader allow rule or an enabled acceptable-ads setting can permit content you expected to be blocked.
- The list is not enabled or is stale. Different products ship with different lists, and list updates are necessary as sites change.
- The browser limits the extension’s capabilities. Extension-platform changes can affect which lists, rule types and injection methods a product can use.
- The site changed its delivery method. A page can move an ad or tracker into a first-party resource, rename an endpoint or alter its markup, invalidating an older match.
Ads versus trackers: related but different questions
Advertising and tracking frequently share infrastructure, but blocking one does not automatically block the other. A network rule aimed at an ad server can stop an ad resource while leaving a separate analytics request untouched. Conversely, a privacy list can block a known analytics endpoint even when the page’s advertising is delivered elsewhere.

- 【Large Size for Compatibility】WIFI router emf shield is 12 inches long x 11 7/8 inches high x 5 1/2 inches wide. You only need to confirm the size of your router. The width of the EMF-proof WiFi router cover is the key consideration.Fits the large WiFi routers like, Comcast, Xfinity, ATT Uverse...
- 【Benefits of protecting WIFI cover】 The emf blocker for wifi router is crafted from high-quality polymer materials and effectively blocks approximately 90% of EMF emitted by large WiFi routers, including new 5G models. Safeguard your family from electromagnetic fields with this product. The cover boasts excellent electrical conductivity and shielding capabilities. Designed as a Faraday cage, it is easy to use and provides complete coverage for routers, especially larger ones.
- 【Good Performance】The EMF-proof WiFi router cover features a honeycomb design that allows for natural airflow and cooling. Simply fold the entire modem/router to optimize performance. Even when covered, the WiFi router functions normally. The EMF-proof WiFi router cover preserves the range of WiFi signals we typically use.
- 【Protecting From Now】The proximity of harmful sources to our bodies directly affects the amount of radiation we are exposed to. Additionally, the longer the exposure time, the greater the potential harm. As we rest or engage in entertainment activities at home, the router's radiation is constantly present. However, with this cover, we can significantly improve our health and well-being.
- 【Promoting a Greener Living Environment】While the harmful effects of WiFi routers may not be extremely high, they still emit microwave radiation. Numerous studies have linked this radiation to various illnesses and neurological problems. Often, we believe we are keeping our children safe without realizing the dangers of exposing them to electromagnetic toxins. This WiFi router cover offers protection against such risks.
Cosmetic hiding is especially easy to misunderstand. It can make a page look clean without preventing the remote server from receiving a request. If your goal is to reduce network exposure rather than improve appearance, look for evidence that a network rule matched the request; a hidden element alone is not that evidence.
Fingerprinting is another example of uncertainty. A list can target known fingerprinting scripts, but blocking those named scripts does not prove that a site has no ability to derive identifying information from other browser signals or code paths.

Browser and product differences in 2026
Manifest V3 changed the browser extension platform and has affected filtering products differently. Availability and capability are therefore product-and-browser questions, not properties shared by every ad blocker.
| Product or platform statement | Documented position | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Adblock Plus | Its current getting-started documentation says the extension supports Chrome Manifest V3. | This describes the product’s stated compatibility, not the behavior of every blocker in that browser. |
| uBlock Origin on Chrome | The project overview updated in January 2026 says the full uBlock Origin extension is no longer available on Chrome and that uBlock Origin Lite is available with limitations. | The overview is project-affiliated; support and browser policies can change and should be checked again when installing. |
| uBlock Origin on Firefox and Brave | The same January 2026 project overview says full support continues on Firefox and Brave. | This is the project’s compatibility statement rather than an independent comparative test. |
The project overview describes Lite limitations involving filter-list use, default cosmetic filtering, scriptlet injection and dynamic filtering. Those differences can change what a user can configure and which rules a browser can enforce, even when two extensions appear to offer the same basic feature.

Defaults, acceptable ads and user control
Adblock Plus documents an Acceptable Ads feature that is enabled by default and allows ads meeting its criteria. Its settings let users disable that feature to block all ads handled by the relevant list. The criteria were handed to an independent committee in 2017, according to the product’s help material.
That is a named product default, not a universal ad-blocker behavior. Other blockers may ship with different lists, no such program or different controls. If an ad remains visible, check the product’s own settings before assuming that network filtering failed.
When blocking breaks a site
False positives are an expected trade-off of broad matching. A blocked script may provide login controls, comments, video playback or a payment widget rather than advertising. Use the least permissive fix that restores the needed function.
- Confirm the symptom. Reload the page with the blocker enabled and note exactly what fails: a blank frame, missing controls, a login loop or an entire page.
- Check whether a network rule is involved. If the product provides a request logger or filtering panel, identify the blocked request and its rule. A cosmetic match will explain a hidden element but not a missing network resource.
- Prefer a narrow exception. Allow the specific domain, request type or page condition rather than disabling every list globally.
- Reload after changing the rule. Many pages need a fresh load before an allowed resource is requested again.
- Report or refine the false positive. A rule that matches a legitimate resource can be narrowed, and a list maintainer may need the page’s current pattern to correct the rule for other users.
- Use an allowlist only when necessary. Allowlisting a whole site restores all of its requests, including advertising and tracking, so it should be a deliberate choice.
A practical way to diagnose a missed ad or tracker
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| The ad is visible and the page layout is unchanged | No matching network or cosmetic rule applied | Check enabled lists and whether the resource’s domain or URL is recognized |
| A blank space remains where an ad was | The request was blocked but the page reserved space, or only the content was removed | Inspect whether a network request was cancelled and whether a cosmetic rule targets the container |
| The container disappears but privacy exposure is uncertain | A cosmetic rule may have hidden an element after its request | Look for a separate network match; visual removal alone is not proof of blocking |
| A site feature stops working | A rule matched a legitimate resource | Find the matching rule and create the narrowest site or request exception |
| Behavior differs between browsers | Extension APIs, Manifest V3 support or product builds differ | Check the blocker and browser’s current compatibility documentation |
How to choose and configure a blocker responsibly
There is no evidence-based universal ranking in the documented material. Instead, compare the capabilities that affect your own use:
- Network rules: confirm that the product can cancel matching requests, not merely hide page elements.
- Cosmetic rules: check whether it can remove clutter that network blocking cannot identify.
- List control: look for the ability to enable, disable and update relevant advertising, privacy and custom lists.
- Exceptions: make sure you can narrow a rule or allow a necessary site without turning off protection everywhere.
- Browser support: verify current compatibility for your browser, especially where Manifest V3 changes have affected extension behavior.
- Defaults: review whether qualifying ads or other categories are permitted automatically and whether that choice can be changed.
Keep expectations specific. A blocker is well suited to reducing known advertising and tracking requests and cleaning up page presentation. It is not a complete privacy system, a guarantee against all tracking or a substitute for judging which sites and services you trust.
What to remember
Ad blockers operate at two layers. Network filtering can stop a matching resource before download; cosmetic filtering can hide a matching element after the page represents it. Filter lists determine what counts as a match, while exceptions, browser APIs and product defaults determine how much control you have. Ads and trackers that fall outside those rules can still appear or communicate, and an overly broad rule can remove legitimate functionality. Understanding which layer acted is the key to interpreting both successful blocking and the cases where something remains.
