For everyday outdoor use, an AMOLED smartwatch advertised at around 2,000 nits peak brightness is a sensible starting point. If you often use your watch in harsh, direct sun, consider models rated at 3,000 nits or more. These are practical shortlist guideposts based on manufacturer specifications—not guaranteed visibility thresholds or results from a standardized test.
What a smartwatch’s nit rating tells you
Nits are the brightness unit manufacturers use in display specifications. The figures on smartwatch product pages are described as peak, maximum, or “up to” brightness. They do not establish that the display sustains that level in every mode, or that it is available on an always-on watch face.
For example, Samsung advertises the Galaxy Watch8 at up to 3,000 nits and says its Super AMOLED screen is viewable in bright sunlight. That is Samsung’s claim, not an independent comparison with other watches. Samsung Galaxy Watch8
Apple lists the Apple Watch Series 12 at 2,000 nits peak brightness and 1 nit minimum brightness. Its specifications also describe an Always-On Retina display with wide-angle OLEDs and LTPO3. Those details do not provide a shared, comparable always-on brightness figure across brands. Apple Watch technical specifications

How many nits should you look for?
- General outdoor use: Around 2,000 nits peak is a reasonable starting point for comparing AMOLED watches.
- Frequent use in harsh direct sun: A rating of 3,000 nits or higher is a useful shortlist preference, not a promise that the watch will always be legible.
This guidance is an interpretation of manufacturers’ stated figures, not a scientifically established cutoff. Apple announced a 3,000-nit maximum for Apple Watch Ultra 2, saying its display architecture was intended to improve readability in harsh sunlight. Samsung advertises up to 3,000 nits for Galaxy Watch8, while its Galaxy Watch6 launch material specified 2,000 nits peak. These figures come from separate manufacturers and product materials, not a common test protocol. Apple’s September 2023 Apple Watch Ultra 2 announcement · Samsung Galaxy Watch6 launch announcement
Check how the display behaves when you glance at it
A peak-brightness figure does not tell you how bright the watch face remains in always-on mode, whether raising or turning your wrist is required, or how automatic brightness controls behave. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 launch material specifically mentions an Always On Display brightness adjustment feature, but the reviewed product materials do not give a common always-on brightness measurement for comparing brands. Before choosing an AMOLED smartwatch, check the exact model’s documentation and display settings for the mode you plan to use. If you rely on quick glances while cycling or exercising, verify whether the information you need is visible without a gesture. Brightness behavior and available settings can differ by model and mode.
Account for battery expectations
Do not assume a watch can maintain its advertised maximum brightness all day without affecting battery life. The manufacturer pages cited here do not quantify a comparable brightness-versus-battery tradeoff, so consult the exact model’s documentation for battery expectations under your preferred display mode rather than relying on the peak-nit number alone.

Consider transflective MIP for outdoor-focused use
AMOLED is not the only smartwatch display type to consider. Garmin lists both AMOLED watches and models with “Sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP)” displays. That makes MIP a relevant alternative to compare if outdoor use is a priority, but Garmin’s comparison does not establish that MIP is always more readable than AMOLED. Garmin smartwatch comparison

Use this checklist when comparing watches
- Compare the advertised peak brightness as a shortlist figure, not as an all-day or always-on guarantee.
- Check always-on display behavior, including brightness and whether a wrist gesture is needed.
- Look up battery expectations for the display mode you intend to use.
- Compare AMOLED with transflective MIP if you spend substantial time outdoors.
- Confirm phone compatibility and regional specifications for the exact model before buying.
