AI can estimate what a person saw from fMRI data by learning a mapping between measured brain responses and known visual or semantic features, then using an AI model to generate an image or caption. The result is an informed reconstruction—not a direct recording of a thought. It depends on the task, the participant’s data, the measured signal and the generator’s learned assumptions.
Can AI read your mind from an MRI?
Not in the unrestricted sense that phrase suggests. The research discussed here uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during controlled experiments: a participant views known images, and researchers pair those stimuli with the brain activity measured at the time. A trained system learns from those pairs how responses relate to features of visual scenes. It can then estimate features for another response and use a captioning or image-generation model to produce an output.
That setup matters. These systems are not simply handed an arbitrary scan and asked to reveal any private thought. They rely on a defined task, data collected from participants, and a mapping learned from examples. Research on perception also does not establish that the same results apply to unrestricted inner speech or private mental imagery. The ICLR 2024 authors report that non-invasive decoding of imagination is substantially weaker than decoding of perception, and that disruptive tasks reduce performance.

How does an fMRI scan become a picture or caption?
The overall process has three parts: collect examples that pair brain activity with known stimuli, learn a mapping from activity to useful features, and pass the estimated features to a model that can generate an image or description.
1. Pair brain responses with known stimuli
During an experiment, a participant views images—or, in some study designs, reads descriptions or imagines scenes—while an fMRI scanner measures changes related to blood oxygenation in the brain. Researchers know which stimulus was presented and can pair it with the measured response. A model can learn only from the examples and tasks represented in its training data; the experiment is not an open-ended scan of a person’s mind.
For example, Ferrante and colleagues’ 2024 work used Natural Scenes Dataset (NSD) data from eight subjects who viewed COCO images. That is a particular research dataset and participant group, not evidence that one person’s scan can be interpreted in the same way without relevant examples.

2. Map activity to visual or semantic features
Instead of treating every image as an isolated collection of pixels, many approaches use features extracted by pretrained visual or multimodal AI models. These features can represent different kinds of information, from scene meaning and object identity to visual structure. A decoder is trained to estimate those features from brain-response patterns.

Ferrante et al. report using regularized linear regression to map brain activity to extracted model features. Other approaches use neural networks or separate the task of estimating semantic information from the task of estimating finer visual detail. The choice of mapping affects what the system can recover, and it does not turn the fMRI measurement into a complete picture stored in the brain.
3. Generate an output from the estimates
For a description, decoded features can be supplied to a captioning model such as GIT. For an image, estimated semantic or visual features can guide a pretrained image generator. Ferrante et al. describe a latent-diffusion pipeline with additional depth-map guidance.
The generator contributes information of its own: it has learned patterns from its training data and uses them to create a coherent output. When the fMRI signal does not determine a detail, the model may supply a plausible one. This is why a convincing-looking image is not proof that the system recovered the exact pixels a participant saw.

What information can the system recover?
It helps to distinguish several goals that are often grouped under “reconstruction.” A model may correctly indicate the broad scene or a central object without accurately reproducing color, edges, position or other fine detail. A caption may communicate the gist usefully while omitting visual specifics. These are different kinds of success, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

- Semantic correctness: whether the output captures the scene’s general meaning or important objects.
- Low-level visual fidelity: whether details such as colors, edges and spatial arrangement resemble the original stimulus.
- Caption usefulness: whether a description conveys the scene’s important content, even if it is not a word-for-word recovery of anything the participant thought.
The 2024 Cortex2Image work explicitly separates semantic-feature decoding from estimation of fine detail. That separation reflects a basic constraint: broad meaning may be more recoverable than a precise image, and the system may use the meaning estimate to generate a plausible scene rather than reproduce every visual feature.
Images and descriptions can be produced from related decoded semantic information, but the output models do different jobs and can fail differently. A captioner must choose words to summarize the estimated content. An image generator must turn estimates into a visual scene and may add details that the measurements do not settle. Neither output is automatically a transcript of the participant’s experience.
Is the generated image really what the person saw?
Not necessarily. An output can be semantically similar to the stimulus while differing in its exact objects, colors, shapes or arrangement. fMRI measurements are noisy and spatially limited, and the signal does not uniquely specify every pixel of a complex natural image. A generative model then fills gaps using visual patterns it learned elsewhere.

When evaluating a reconstruction, ask what the study measured and how it judged success. A picture that looks plausible to a viewer is not, by itself, evidence of pixel-level recovery. A caption that names the scene correctly does not demonstrate that the system recovered the participant’s exact visual experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much evidence is there, and can studies be compared?
There is no single general-purpose accuracy number that summarizes fMRI image and description reconstruction. Results depend on the subjects, dataset, scanner, task, output type and evaluation metric. A score from one study cannot be treated as a universal measure of how well AI can “read” a brain.
The scale and design of the data also vary. Ferrante et al.’s 2024 method used NSD data from eight subjects viewing COCO images. A 2026 eLife account describes SemReps-8K, a dataset involving six subjects and more than 8,000 stimuli per subject. Its data cover distinct conditions involving image presentation, descriptive-caption presentation and imagery. These are different experimental resources and conditions; the figures do not imply that every participant completed every kind of task in the same way.
Scanner differences add another reason for care. The SemReps-8K account notes that it used 3T fMRI, while NSD uses 7T fMRI, and cautions against straightforward direct comparison with some NSD results. A larger stimulus collection or a higher reported score alone does not establish that one system is better if the acquisition, task and evaluation differ.

For a fair comparison, check whether studies use the same dataset, task, scanner conditions, output type and evaluation method. If they do not, describe what each experiment found in its own setting rather than ranking their headline scores as though they measured the same thing.
Why is fMRI not suitable for many real-time mind-reading claims?
fMRI’s response is relatively slow, which limits how closely it can track rapidly changing visual experience. In a comparison reported by Benchetrit, Banville and King in their 2024 ICLR paper, the authors cite approximately 0.5 Hz temporal resolution for fMRI and approximately 5,000 Hz for MEG. Those are the paper’s modality-comparison figures, not universal specifications for every scanner or MEG system.
MEG offers much faster temporal sampling but has different spatial limitations. In the paper’s comparison, MEG loses low-level detail relative to 7T fMRI. The authors describe their findings as preliminary. This is a tradeoff between ways of measuring brain activity, not evidence that an fMRI system can continuously reveal a person’s thoughts in real time.

The practical point is that an output generated from an fMRI experiment should be interpreted in the context of the timing and structure of that experiment. A method demonstrated on controlled, known stimuli does not become live, unrestricted decoding merely because it can produce an image or sentence.
What are the main limitations?
- Indirect and noisy measurements: fMRI measures blood-oxygen-related changes rather than directly capturing a complete visual scene. Its limited resolution and slow response make complex natural images difficult to reconstruct.
- Dependence on training examples: the decoder learns from paired brain responses and known stimuli. A system trained for a particular dataset or task should not be assumed to work equally well for an unrelated person, stimulus or mental activity.
- Dependence on model priors: pretrained feature extractors, captioners and image generators shape the result. Generative models can add a coherent detail even when the fMRI signal does not uniquely support it.
- Different kinds of output and evaluation: semantic similarity, visual detail and caption quality are distinct outcomes. A success on one does not guarantee success on the others.
- Limited generalization from perception to imagery: results from viewing controlled stimuli should not be generalized to unrestricted imagination or inner speech. The ICLR authors report substantially weaker non-invasive decoding for imagination than for perception.
These limitations do not make the method meaningless. They define what its results can support: estimates of stimulus-related information under studied conditions, rather than an unfiltered readout of what someone thinks.
What should a reader take away?
AI-generated images and captions from fMRI are best understood as model-assisted estimates. Researchers collect responses to known stimuli, train a decoder to estimate visual or semantic features, and pass those estimates to a generator or captioner. The output can capture a scene’s gist, but its fine details may come from the generator rather than from information uniquely present in the scan. Study conditions, participant data, scanner, task and evaluation method all matter, so no one accuracy figure or demonstration establishes general-purpose mind-reading.
