Boston Dynamics robots do not hand a human request directly to a conversational AI that controls their motors. Instead, robot autonomy handles movement and other established capabilities, while a language or multimodal model can interpret a high-level request and select from a defined set of tools. Software connects those tool calls to the robot’s API or SDK, and the robot’s responses can inform what happens next. Spot has demonstrated this approach in experimental projects; Atlas’s work with Gemini Robotics is a research and development direction for industrial tasks, not evidence of a released general-purpose voice assistant.
What it means for a robot to “understand” an instruction
When someone asks a robot to do something, several different problems are hidden inside that request. The system may need to recognize what the person means, identify relevant objects or locations, choose an action the robot can perform, execute it safely, and determine whether it worked. Boston Dynamics describes these as layered capabilities rather than one all-purpose AI brain.
A language model can help translate an open-ended request into a plan or a selection of robot functions. But the robot’s autonomy and control systems remain responsible for capabilities such as locomotion, mapping, navigation, and manipulation. A model that interprets “take a picture” or “pick that up” does not thereby replace the software that balances the robot, moves its limbs, or carries out the action.

The model works with the information it receives—such as text, images, or robot state—and with the actions it has been allowed to request. Its answer is only as useful as the context and tools available to it.

How a high-level request becomes a physical action
- Receive an instruction. The input may be typed or, in a speech-enabled demonstration, captured as spoken language and converted to text. A broad request may need further context before the system can choose a suitable action.
- Interpret the scene and situation. The model may be given camera images, information about the robot’s position, or other context. This helps connect words such as “that object” or “over there” to what the robot can observe or where it is.
- Select from available tools. Rather than inventing a motor command, the model can choose among functions exposed to it—for example, a request to take a picture or pick up an object. Those options are finite: a model cannot use a function that has not been made available through the integration.
- Translate the tool request into a robot command. A software bridge connects the model’s selected action to the robot’s API or SDK. The robot’s existing autonomy performs the movement or other capability behind that interface.
- Use the result as new context. The robot can report what happened. That response may help the model decide whether to try another action, ask for clarification, or proceed to the next step.
This structure can support a feedback loop: model-selected action, robot execution, result, and a possible next action. It does not establish that every action is checked perfectly, that the model always chooses correctly, or that the sequence is safe to run without supervision. Boston Dynamics’ demonstrations show how the layers can be connected, not an independent measure of general-purpose instruction accuracy.
What Spot’s Gemini demonstration shows
In its “Tools for Your To Do List with Spot and Gemini Robotics” demonstration, Boston Dynamics describes an SDK-based bridge between Gemini Robotics and Spot’s API. Engineers supplied the model with a description of Spot and the tools it could use. This is important: the model was not given unrestricted control of the robot. It received an interface to specified capabilities.
The engineers found that an initial prompt and tool descriptions did not always produce the intended behavior for simple requests such as “put down an object” or “take a picture.” They refined the descriptions and baseline prompts to make the available actions clearer. That iteration illustrates a practical requirement of tool-based systems: the model must be told what each tool does and how to select it in the context of the request.

In the described workflow, the model could inspect camera images, identify objects, request actions such as pickup, and use Spot’s response to adapt its next step. The robot supplies capabilities and feedback; the model helps interpret the goal and coordinate among the exposed tools. A request that sounds simple to a person can still depend on what the camera sees, what actions the robot supports, and whether the model has enough detail to choose among them.
Boston Dynamics says the demonstration grew out of a 2025 hackathon and characterizes it as experimental. The company’s own wording is explicit: “Although this is still an experimental step and not a hardened application, it illustrates a compelling direction for robotics and physical AI.” That status matters more than how natural the interaction looks in a video: the demonstration does not show that every Spot customer can currently issue arbitrary spoken instructions to a production robot.
Spot’s earlier tour-guide proof of concept
A separate Spot project explored a more conversational role. Boston Dynamics’ “Robots That Can Chat” describes a tour-guide proof of concept that combined speech recognition, camera-fed visual question answering or captioning, a language model, and contextual information from Spot’s 3D map and localization. The system synthesized those inputs into a limited command, such as “say,” “ask,” “go_to,” or “label.”

That architecture helps explain why a robot’s answer or action can depend on more than a language model alone. Speech recognition turns spoken words into input; cameras provide visual information; map and localization data provide place context; and the model combines these signals into a command from the system’s available set. The tour-guide example was designed to be interactive and entertaining, not as a high-stakes factual assistant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBoston Dynamics described the language model in this application as an improv actor and explicitly noted that language models can hallucinate. A polished exchange is not proof that every statement is grounded in the scene or map. In any setting where a mistaken answer or action could matter, the risk must be handled by the application’s design and operating procedures—not assumed away because the robot can converse.
How visual AI helps Spot navigate
Language is only one part of instruction-following. A robot also needs to interpret the physical environment. Boston Dynamics says Spot’s built-in stereo cameras generate depth data and a 3D representation of nearby geometry. That geometric perception can show where objects and surfaces are, while visual foundation models add semantic labels and context about what the camera sees.

For example, Boston Dynamics describes recognizing a ladder and changing the route to avoid walking underneath it. The distinction is useful: geometry helps represent the obstacle’s shape and location, while semantic recognition contributes context about what the obstacle is and why a particular route may be undesirable.
Adding more semantic awareness is not automatically better in every case. Boston Dynamics says implementation requires balancing real-time speed, false positives, and useful avoidance. If the system treats too many things as hazards, it can block its own path or leave the robot stuck. If it is too lenient, it may not avoid a hazard appropriately. A robot therefore needs a practical decision threshold, not just the ability to attach labels to camera images.
Spot and Atlas: what is demonstrated and what is still developing
| System or project | What the model receives or does | What it shows—and what it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Spot with Gemini Robotics | Boston Dynamics describes a model supplied with information about Spot and a defined set of tools, connected to Spot’s API through an SDK-based bridge. Camera images and robot responses can inform action selection. | An experimental demonstration of using a model to select and sequence robot capabilities. It is not evidence of a hardened, generally available conversational feature. |
| Spot tour-guide proof of concept | Speech recognition, camera-fed visual question answering or captioning, a language model, and Spot’s 3D-map/localization context feed a limited set of commands. | An interactive tour-guide concept with commands such as say, ask, go_to, or label. It was not presented as a high-stakes factual assistant. |
| Atlas and Gemini Robotics | Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind announced an exploration of integrating Gemini Robotics foundation models with Atlas for industrial tasks, beginning in automotive manufacturing. | A direction for research and development, not a verified release of general natural-language instruction following. Atlas’s broader capabilities continue to develop. |
Atlas is an industrial humanoid, and its work should not be conflated with Spot’s demonstrations. In a January 5, 2026 partnership announcement, Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind said they would explore integrating Gemini Robotics models with Atlas for industrial tasks, beginning in automotive manufacturing. Alberto Rodriguez, Boston Dynamics’ Director of Robot Behavior for Atlas, said: “We are building the world’s most capable humanoid, and we knew we needed a partner that could help us establish new kinds of visual-language-action models for these complex robots.” The statement describes the rationale for the partnership, not a claim that a finished language interface is already deployed.

Boston Dynamics later described Atlas as having been trained with a mix of reinforcement learning in simulation and teleoperated demonstrations, with broader generalist capabilities continuing to develop through reinforcement learning and foundation models. Natural-language instruction following on Atlas is best understood as part of this ongoing development unless a newer company source verifies a released capability. The company’s Atlas product information focuses on enterprise material handling and industrial workflows, not consumer use.
What these demonstrations mean for reliability and safety
Tool selection can make a language model useful without giving it direct access to every low-level control. It can also limit what the system can attempt: the model’s available actions are bounded by the functions exposed through the software integration. But a finite tool list does not by itself guarantee that the model will interpret an instruction correctly, select the right function, or provide adequate context.
- Ambiguous requests can fail. “Put down an object” may need clarification about which object or where to place it. Boston Dynamics’ prompt iteration for Spot shows that even short requests can require better descriptions of tools and expected behavior.
- Perception can be incomplete. The model’s view depends on the images and context it receives. A camera-based identification or caption is not the same as a guaranteed account of everything in the environment.
- Feedback is useful but not infallible. Robot responses can guide the next step, but the available descriptions do not establish that every failure will be detected or corrected automatically.
- Semantic avoidance involves trade-offs. Overly restrictive hazard recognition may prevent progress; overly permissive behavior may miss a useful avoidance action.
- Language models can hallucinate. Boston Dynamics names this limitation in the tour-guide concept, so conversational fluency should not be treated as proof of factual reliability.
The reviewed company material does not provide an independent benchmark for natural-language instruction accuracy. It therefore supports explaining the architecture and maturity of the described projects, but not assigning them a general reliability percentage or claiming readiness for unsupervised safety-critical work.

Boston Dynamics has demonstrated language-model interactions with Spot, including an experimental Gemini Robotics example and an earlier tour-guide proof of concept. Those examples do not establish that a typical Spot owner can use an unrestricted, production-ready voice assistant. The available descriptions distinguish demonstrations from hardened applications, and the actions depend on the tools and context supplied to the model.
For organizations considering a robot, the company describes Spot and Stretch as commercially available, while Atlas is in the early stages of its commercial journey. Boston Dynamics positions its robots for commercial, industrial, enterprise, and university research use, not individual non-commercial purchase. A prospective enterprise user should distinguish the robot’s established workflow capabilities from experimental language-model features and verify the specific functionality available for the intended application.
