Bombadil applies property-based testing to web interfaces: you define conditions that should remain true, and its documented workflow explores the UI and checks those conditions in the states it reaches. Playwright supplies browser automation and testing tools that can help with targeted checks and debugging, but the available documentation does not establish that Bombadil embeds every Playwright Test feature.

What property-based UI testing means

A conventional end-to-end test usually scripts a particular sequence of actions and asserts an expected result. Property-based UI testing starts with a condition—an invariant—that should hold across states reached during exploration. For example, Bombadil’s package documentation shows a property that extracts the page’s h1 text and checks that it is not empty after trimming.

Maaret Pyhäjärvi described the approach in an October 1, 2026 presentation: “Instead of scripting test cases, you state what must always be true, and the tool explores the app on its own: it clicks, types, scrolls and reloads, and checks every property in every state it reaches.” This is a description of the tool’s operating model, not evidence of exhaustive coverage or a measured defect-finding rate. What Bombadil and Playwright each contribute

Bombadil: properties checked during exploration

Bombadil’s npm package presents it as property-based testing for web UIs. Its documentation describes a browser-test command and TypeScript helpers, including always and extract, for expressing checks against UI state. See the Bombadil npm package documentation.

Playwright: browser automation and diagnostics

Playwright is a browser automation and web testing framework whose APIs support Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Playwright Test also offers isolated browser contexts, automatic waiting, web-first assertions and traces that record browser execution details. These capabilities are useful concepts for a browser-testing workflow, particularly when investigating a failure; the cited Bombadil documentation does not show that all Playwright Test features are directly built into Bombadil. See the Playwright project overview.

Start with the documented Bombadil setup

The following commands and property illustrate the package documentation’s getting-started approach. They are documentation examples, not a report of an independently run test.

  1. Install Bombadil as a development dependency from your project directory:

    npm install --save-dev @antithesishq/bombadil
  2. Add a package script that runs the documented browser test command against your app. For example:

    "scripts": {
      "test:ui": "bombadil browser test https://your-app.example.com"
    }

    Replace the example address with the URL of the UI you intend to test.

  3. Run the script with npm:

    npm run test:ui
  4. For a custom property, the package documentation shows importing always and extract from @antithesishq/bombadil/browser, then checking that the trimmed heading text is nonempty:

    import { always, extract } from "@antithesishq/bombadil/browser";

    // Example property: the current page has a nonempty heading.
    const headingIsPresent = always(
      extract("h1", (heading) => heading.textContent?.trim() ?? ""),
      (text) => text.length > 0
    );

    Consult the package documentation for the exact property-file format and configuration supported by the version you install.

Choose properties that matter to users

A property should express a meaningful condition, rather than merely restating an implementation detail. The heading check is the package’s example. Other possible properties to consider—not examples demonstrated by that documentation—include:

Be precise about when a condition applies. A sign-in button, for instance, may correctly disappear after authentication, so a property that expects it in every state would be wrong. Properties only check the behavior they describe in states the exploration reaches.

Use Playwright to investigate failures

If a property fails, first identify the state and condition involved. Then create or run a focused check for the relevant journey so the behavior can be examined deliberately. Playwright Test’s assertions and traces can help with this kind of browser-level diagnosis; they are relevant Playwright capabilities, not proof that a particular Bombadil setup automatically invokes them. Keep browser versions and credentials under control

Install browsers through the Playwright CLI

Playwright browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions. Its browser guide recommends installing browsers through the Playwright CLI and repeating browser installation when needed after Playwright updates. Follow the instructions for the version in your project rather than assuming that a previously installed browser binary will match a newer package. Playwright browser installation guide.

Protect saved authentication state

When testing authenticated areas, saved browser authentication state can contain cookies and headers capable of impersonating an account. Playwright recommends keeping that state out of source control; use an appropriate ignored location and handle the files as credentials. Playwright authentication guide.

What this approach does not guarantee

Exploration is not a guarantee that every possible UI state or interaction will be covered. A property can only detect violations of the condition it expresses in states the tool reaches. The cited materials provide no quantified completeness guarantee, effectiveness benchmark or defect-rate result for Bombadil. Treat property-driven exploration as a way to check invariants beyond a single hand-authored journey, not as a substitute for deliberate scenario tests, accessibility checks or other validation your application requires.
