New Shepard is Blue Origin’s reusable suborbital rocket for short human flights and research; New Glenn is its much larger orbital rocket for launching payloads into space. New Shepard crosses the 100-kilometer Kármán line and returns to Earth, while New Glenn is designed to deliver satellites and other payloads into low Earth orbit and higher-energy orbits. Their shared manufacturer and reusable hardware can make them sound like alternatives, but they serve different missions.

Their latest reported status also differs. Blue Origin announced on January 30, 2026, that it would pause New Shepard flights for at least two years. New Glenn had flown three missions by April 19, 2026; after a ground-test anomaly in May, the company described corrective work and a target to return to flight by the end of 2026. That target was not confirmation of a completed return as of the latest official update covered here, dated August 5, 2026.

What is the difference between New Shepard and New Glenn?

The simplest distinction is destination. New Shepard is a suborbital system: it takes a crew capsule or research payload above the Kármán line, then brings it back without entering orbit. New Glenn is an orbital launch vehicle: its upper stage carries a payload onward after launch, with the company describing capacity for low Earth orbit (LEO) and higher-energy destinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference determines what each rocket is for. New Shepard offers a brief human spaceflight experience and supports research, education, and technology payloads. New Glenn is intended for orbital payload launches, including satellite and institutional missions. New Shepard’s six seats are a passenger capacity, not an orbital payload rating; New Glenn’s payload figures measure mass delivered to particular orbits, not people carried.

The specifications and status statements here are Blue Origin’s, the manufacturer and operator. They should be read as company descriptions and claims, rather than an independent comparative performance assessment.

Is New Shepard an orbital rocket?

No. New Shepard is suborbital. It rises above the Kármán line—an altitude Blue Origin gives as 100 km (62 miles)—but does not accelerate its capsule into an orbit around Earth. The capsule returns to the ground after several minutes of weightlessness. A flight lasts about 11 minutes, according to Blue Origin’s vehicle description.

Crossing the Kármán line and reaching orbit are different milestones. An orbital vehicle must put its payload on a trajectory that keeps it circling Earth, rather than simply rising high and coming back down. That is why New Shepard’s altitude and passenger experience cannot be compared directly with New Glenn’s payload-to-orbit capability.

Can New Shepard carry satellites?

It can carry research, education, and technology payloads, but it does not deliver them into orbit. A satellite that needs to remain in orbit requires an orbital launch vehicle such as New Glenn, not a New Shepard suborbital flight. Blue Origin’s material describes New Shepard as a platform for payloads on suborbital flights; it does not establish an orbital satellite-delivery service for the system.

How a New Shepard flight works

New Shepard combines a booster with a pressurized crew capsule. Blue Origin describes the system as autonomous, so the capsule does not have a pilot. During a typical flight, the booster carries the capsule upward; after separation, the capsule continues on a suborbital arc. Passengers experience several minutes of weightlessness before the capsule returns under parachutes. The booster returns to a vertical landing.

  1. Launch and ascent: The BE-3PM-powered booster lifts the crew capsule or payload.
  2. Separation and coast: The capsule separates and follows a suborbital trajectory, crossing the 100-kilometer Kármán line on a typical crew flight.
  3. Return: The capsule descends under parachutes while the booster makes a separate vertical landing.

Blue Origin lists six seats in the capsule. That is its stated capacity, not a promise that every flight carries six passengers. The company also describes payload uses in research, education, and technology; the passenger and payload purposes should not be conflated.

What does “fully reusable” mean here?

Blue Origin describes New Shepard as a fully reusable system and says nearly 99% of its dry mass is reused. That is the company’s stated system description, not an independently verified lifecycle assessment. It is also separate from the company’s environmental statement that engine combustion produces water vapor without carbon emissions during flight; that statement does not establish the system’s full manufacturing, operations, or lifecycle emissions.

How New Glenn delivers orbital payloads

New Glenn is a two-stage rocket, more than 320 feet (98 meters) tall according to Blue Origin. On the 7×2 configuration, seven BE-4 engines power the first stage, burning liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas. The second stage uses two restartable BE-3U engines that burn liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The upper stage continues carrying the payload after the first stage separates.

Blue Origin describes the 7×2 vehicle as having a seven-meter payload fairing, which it says provides twice the volume of a five-meter-class fairing. A fairing encloses the payload during the early part of launch; its size is one factor in accommodating satellites and other spacecraft. The fairing’s stated volume comparison is a company claim and does not, by itself, determine which payloads fit or what a particular mission can carry.

New Glenn 7×2 stated payload capability

Destination Blue Origin’s stated 7×2 capability How to interpret it
Low Earth orbit (LEO) More than 45 metric tons Company-stated design capability for the 7×2 configuration; not a guarantee for every orbit or mission
Geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) More than 13 metric tons Company-stated design capability for the 7×2 configuration; GTO is not the same destination as direct geostationary orbit

These numbers are not interchangeable. A rocket’s payload capacity varies with destination and mission requirements, and the GTO figure should not be described as a direct-to-geostationary-orbit capacity. The published figures are Blue Origin’s design claims for the 7×2 configuration, not independently verified performance for every launch.

What happens to the stages?

New Glenn’s first stage is designed to return to a platform downrange in the Atlantic, while the upper stage continues toward the target orbit. The NG-3 flight profile describes the first stage descending toward Jacklyn, a sea-based landing platform several hundred miles downrange. The company says the first stage is designed for a minimum of 25 flights. That is a reusability design target, not evidence that one stage has completed 25 flights.

What has each rocket demonstrated?

Design specifications and flight results answer different questions. A vehicle page can state what a configuration is designed to carry, while a mission establishes what happened on that particular flight. Blue Origin reported that New Glenn’s third mission, NG-3, lifted off on April 19, 2026, carrying AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 7 satellite toward LEO. Its flight profile described the first-stage descent toward Jacklyn while the BE-3U-powered second stage continued the mission.

That launch is a dated operational milestone; it should not be stretched into a claim that every stated payload capacity has been demonstrated or that the May ground-test issue had already been resolved. The company’s figures above remain stated capabilities, distinct from an individual launch result.

New Shepard’s reported program totals

In its January 30, 2026 pause announcement, Blue Origin said New Shepard had flown 38 times, taken 98 people above the Kármán line, and carried more than 200 research payloads by that point. These are totals as of that announcement. They are not current totals after a subsequent period of paused flights, and the 98 figure refers to people taken above the Kármán line, not necessarily 98 different individuals.

How do the 7×2 and planned 9×4 New Glenn configurations differ?

New Glenn 7×2 is the configuration associated with the vehicle page’s stated LEO and GTO capabilities and with the missions described above. Blue Origin introduced a future higher-capacity variant, New Glenn 9×4, in a November 2025 development announcement. The names refer to the number of engines: nine on the first stage and four on the upper stage.

Configuration Fairing Blue Origin’s stated destinations and design figures Status indicated by the cited updates
7×2 Seven meters More than 45 metric tons to LEO; more than 13 metric tons to GTO Configuration used for the missions described in the cited flight updates
9×4 8.7 meters More than 70 metric tons to LEO; more than 14 metric tons direct to geostationary orbit (GEO); more than 20 metric tons to trans-lunar injection (TLI) Future configuration with announced design targets; the cited updates do not establish a completed 9×4 mission

The 9×4 figures are not upgrades to quote as the 7×2’s current performance. They are Blue Origin’s targets for a separate future configuration. In August 2026, the company said Launch Complex 36B was under development for 9×4, while Launch Complex 36A would remain the home for 7×2. Facility planning supports the distinction between configurations but does not mean the 9×4 has entered service.

Which Blue Origin rocket is reusable?

Both programs include reusable hardware, but the recovery approaches and the scope of the claims differ. New Shepard is described by Blue Origin as fully reusable: both its booster and capsule return to Earth, by vertical landing and parachutes respectively. For New Glenn, the company describes a reusable first stage intended to land downrange; the upper stage continues with the payload, and the cited flight profiles describe it as mission hardware rather than a returning stage.

  • New Shepard: Booster recovery by vertical landing; capsule recovery by parachute. Blue Origin says nearly 99% of system dry mass is reused.
  • New Glenn: First-stage recovery is part of the vehicle design. Blue Origin’s stated minimum 25 flights is a target for that stage, not a completed reuse record.

“Reusable” therefore does not mean the same thing for the two vehicles. New Shepard’s description covers the system, while New Glenn’s stated reuse plan centers on its first stage. Neither statement alone establishes turnaround time, refurbishment effort, cost per flight, or lifecycle environmental impact.

What is the current status of New Shepard and New Glenn?

Program availability is time-sensitive. The latest relevant official updates covered here run through August 5, 2026; they do not establish what may have changed after that date.

New Shepard: flights paused

On January 30, 2026, Blue Origin announced that it would pause New Shepard flights for no less than two years and redirect resources toward its human lunar program. The announcement is the latest relevant official status in the updates covered here. It does not support describing New Shepard flights as currently available, nor does it establish that the pause has ended.

New Glenn: return work after a ground-test anomaly

On May 28, 2026, New Glenn experienced a significant anomaly during an integrated launch-vehicle hotfire test on the ground at Launch Complex 36. This was not an in-flight failure. In an August 5 update, Blue Origin said the anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one BE-4 engine, confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections. The company reported component and engine hotfire tests, modified valve hardware in production, and continuing fault-tree analysis.

A June 30 update had stated an intention to return to flight by the end of 2026. That is a company target, not confirmation that a return flight occurred. As of the August 5 technical update, the vehicle’s return depended on corrective work and subsequent flight readiness; no post-anomaly return launch is established by the updates covered here.

Which rocket fits which mission?

  • Choose New Shepard’s mission class when the objective is a short suborbital human flight or a research, education, or technology payload flight that does not require orbital delivery. Its capsule is the one with the stated six-seat capacity.
  • Choose New Glenn’s mission class when the payload must be delivered to orbit. Evaluate the relevant configuration and destination: the 7×2 LEO figure is not the GTO figure, and neither should be substituted for the future 9×4 targets.
  • Check timing separately from capability. New Shepard’s pause and New Glenn’s post-test return work affect availability, not the fundamental distinction between suborbital and orbital missions.

Blue Origin has not published a directly comparable passenger-versus-payload metric because these vehicles are not competing to do the same job. There is also no independent comparative performance study or public price comparison established by the cited material. A useful comparison is therefore about mission, destination, architecture, recovery, demonstrated milestones, and dated availability—not a single winner.
