One confirmation means that a transaction is included in a block. Every block added after that gives it another confirmation, making a reorganization or double-spend harder. That is not the same as absolute finality: Bitcoin normally offers probabilistic finality, while Ethereum’s proof-of-stake protocol marks checkpoints as finalized after a supermajority vote. The exchange, merchant, or application receiving the funds decides how much assurance it requires.
The practical rule is to verify the transaction hash on the canonical chain, wait for the recipient’s stated threshold, and distinguish an included block from a protocol-finalized block.
What a confirmation means
A blockchain transaction passes through several states before a recipient treats it as settled. Your wallet signs the transaction and broadcasts it to network nodes. Nodes check the signature, available balance or unspent outputs, fee rules, and other protocol conditions. A valid transaction waits in a node’s transaction pool until a block producer includes it in a block.
From broadcast to first confirmation
- Signed: The wallet creates a cryptographic signature authorizing the spend.
- Broadcast: The signed transaction is relayed to nodes. At this point it is not yet part of the ledger.
- Validated: Nodes independently check that it follows the chain’s rules.
- Included: A miner or validator places it in a proposed block.
- Confirmed: Once that block is accepted as part of the current canonical chain, the transaction has one confirmation.
- Additional depth: Each later block extending the transaction’s block adds one more confirmation.
The U.S. Federal Register described the Bitcoin rule this way in 2017: inclusion in a blockchain block constitutes a confirmation, and appended blocks constitute additional confirmations. A transaction shown as “pending” has normally been broadcast but has not yet reached the included stage.

Confirmation is a depth measure, not a universal guarantee
Confirmation count measures how much accepted chain history sits on top of the transaction. More depth generally means an attacker or competing branch must replace more history. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a chain uses proof of work, proof of stake, or another consensus model, nor does it guarantee that an exchange will credit the deposit immediately.
Why more confirmations increase confidence
Blockchains are distributed, so different nodes can briefly see competing valid blocks. The network eventually selects one branch according to its consensus rules. A transaction in a branch that loses this competition can be temporarily removed from the canonical history; this event is commonly called a reorganization.
With proof of work, replacing a transaction requires producing a competing chain with enough cumulative work to overtake the honest chain. As new blocks accumulate, the cost and difficulty of that attempt generally rise. A malicious party might also try to spend the same funds in two conflicting transactions, hoping one branch reaches a recipient while another branch wins later. Waiting for additional confirmations reduces, but does not mathematically eliminate, that risk.

With proof of stake, the relevant assurance comes from validator attestations and checkpoint rules. A block can be included before the protocol has finalized the checkpoint containing it. The terms “included,” “confirmed,” “justified,” and “finalized” therefore describe different stages, especially on Ethereum.
Acceptance is an application decision layered on top of consensus. A wallet may display a transaction after one confirmation, while an exchange may wait for several, pause crediting during a reorganization, or impose a longer delay for unusually large or risky deposits. There is no single confirmation number that every service must use.

Bitcoin proof-of-work confirmations
What one Bitcoin confirmation represents
For Bitcoin, the first confirmation is the block that contains the transaction and is currently accepted by the network. A second confirmation is the next block extending that history, a third is the block after that, and so on. A transaction with zero confirmations is visible to nodes but is not yet anchored in a block.
Why Bitcoin finality is probabilistic
Bitcoin’s proof-of-work consensus does not provide a protocol flag that says a transaction can never be removed. A newly mined block can be replaced by a competing valid block or chain during a reorganization. As the chain grows, the probability of a successful reversal normally falls because the competing miner would need to redo more work and catch up with honest miners.
This is called probabilistic finality: confidence increases with depth rather than switching from reversible to irreversible at one exact count. Network hash-rate distribution, attacker resources, fee conditions, transaction value, and the recipient’s risk tolerance all matter. A confirmation counter is therefore evidence of increasing confidence, not an absolute guarantee.
What “six confirmations” actually means
A 2017 U.S. Federal Register filing stated that, statistically, a Bitcoin transaction is “virtually final” after six confirmations in the context discussed by that filing. Six is a widely recognized risk threshold, but it is not a universal Bitcoin protocol requirement. The same filing makes clear that users and exchanges can set their own thresholds.
Use six only when the receiving service specifically asks for six or when your own risk policy adopts that benchmark. For a small, reversible purchase, a service may accept fewer confirmations; for a high-value settlement, it may require more, monitor the network, or wait for additional operational checks. The time to reach any count depends on the chain’s block production and current conditions, so a count alone is not a promise of a fixed wait.

Ethereum proof-of-stake finality
Slots, epochs, and checkpoints
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake chain advances in 12-second slots, according to Ethereum.org documentation published in 2026. Thirty-two slots make one epoch. The first block of each epoch serves as a checkpoint. Validators propose blocks and attest to the chain they consider valid.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An included transaction can therefore have block depth without yet being finalized. Validator votes first help a checkpoint become justified. A pair of checkpoints becomes finalized when attestations represent at least two-thirds of the total staked ETH. A finalized block is intended to remain part of the canonical chain unless the protocol experiences a severe consensus failure.
What the two-thirds vote means
The two-thirds figure is a supermajority of staked ether, not two-thirds of wallets, transactions, or ordinary users. If enough validators attest to conflicting histories, the chain can fail to finalize or enter an exceptional recovery process. Ethereum documentation explains that reverting finalized history would require at least one-third of the staked ETH to be burned under the protocol’s economic penalties. The same one-third minority can prevent finality by refusing to participate or by voting in a way that blocks the required supermajority.
Ethereum’s own FAQ defines proof-of-stake finality as the guarantee that a block is a permanent part of the canonical chain and cannot be reverted unless a consensus failure occurs in which an attacker burns about 33% of total staked ether. This is a stronger, explicit protocol guarantee than simply waiting for more proof-of-work blocks.
Do not treat every Ethereum confirmation as finality
An Ethereum transaction displayed as included has entered a block, but that block may be before a justified or finalized checkpoint. Applications should follow the status and threshold they publish rather than describing every included transaction as irreversible. During congestion, delayed attestations, or a temporary loss of finality, a service may wait longer even when the transaction has several block confirmations.

Confirmations versus finality
| Question | Bitcoin proof of work | Ethereum proof of stake |
|---|---|---|
| What starts the count? | The block containing the transaction is one confirmation. | Inclusion in a block provides block depth; applications may also track checkpoint status. |
| How assurance grows | Each additional block adds depth and makes a successful reorganization generally harder. | Validator attestations accumulate toward justified and finalized checkpoints. |
| Type of guarantee | Probabilistic: reversal becomes less likely as more work is built on the block. | Explicit protocol finality after a two-thirds staked-ETH supermajority votes for the checkpoint. |
| Named threshold in the cited sources | Six confirmations were called statistically “virtually final” in a 2017 Federal Register filing; this is not a universal rule. | Finality requires at least 66% (two-thirds) of staked ETH; about 33% can block finality or must be burned to revert finalized history, according to Ethereum.org documentation (2026). |
| What can cause a reversal? | A competing chain or major proof-of-work reorganization. | A pre-finality reorganization; reverting finalized history would require a severe consensus failure and large economic penalties. |
| Who decides when to accept? | The protocol establishes chain rules; each wallet, exchange, merchant, or application sets its own risk threshold. | The protocol supplies checkpoint finality, while applications still decide whether to wait for inclusion, attestations, finality, or additional operational checks. |
How many confirmations should you wait for?
There is no honest universal answer. Start with the receiving service’s published policy because it controls when a deposit, payment, or withdrawal is credited. If no policy is available, choose a threshold based on value, reversibility, chain conditions, and the type of finality the chain provides.
Use the recipient’s stated policy first
- Check the deposit or payment instructions for the exact confirmation count or finality status required.
- Confirm that the policy applies to the correct network and asset. A token transfer on one network is not automatically confirmed on another.
- Allow for extra review after a reorganization, unusual fee market, or temporary loss of finality.
Match waiting time to the transaction’s consequences
- Low-value or reversible activity: A service may accept an early inclusion because a possible delay or reversal has limited impact.
- Irreversible delivery or high-value settlement: Wait for the service’s larger threshold, and consider additional confirmations or protocol finality where available.
- Business accounting: Record the transaction hash, block identifier, confirmation count, and the policy used so another operator can reproduce the decision.
Do not substitute a familiar number from one chain for a requirement on another. Six Bitcoin confirmations and an Ethereum finalized checkpoint are different kinds of evidence.
How to verify a transaction yourself
- Copy the transaction hash from the sending wallet or service. Treat it as the primary identifier; an address alone can have many incoming and outgoing transactions.
- Open a blockchain explorer or your own node’s interface for the exact network. Check that the asset, amount, sender, recipient, fee, and nonce or inputs match your intent.
- Read the status: pending or unconfirmed means no accepted block inclusion; confirmed or included means a block contains it; finalized means the network’s explicit finality rule has been met where the chain exposes one.
- Check the block and chain position. Note the block number or hash and the current confirmation count. If the block is marked orphaned, stale, or non-canonical, do not treat its earlier confirmation count as valid.
- Compare with the recipient’s policy. Send the transaction hash and the observed status to the receiving service if credit has not appeared after its stated threshold.
Never rely on a screenshot, an address search without the transaction hash, or a wallet notification that has not been checked against the canonical chain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a confirmed transaction be reversed?
Bitcoin: yes in principle, less likely with depth
A Bitcoin transaction can be removed from the canonical history if the block containing it loses a reorganization. Once later blocks have been added, the competing branch must replace more proof of work, so the practical risk normally declines. A service can also choose to delay or reverse its own credit after detecting a reorganization; that operational action is separate from changing the blockchain itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEthereum: inclusion is reversible before finality
An Ethereum block that has not reached a finalized checkpoint can be replaced during a reorganization. Waiting for more block depth does not by itself create the same guarantee as a finalized checkpoint. After finality, reverting history would require the exceptional consensus failure and economic cost described by Ethereum’s proof-of-stake rules.

Blockchain reversal versus a refund
Finality does not prevent the recipient from refunding money, a merchant from canceling an order, or a custodian from correcting its internal ledger. Those are contractual or operational actions. They do not mean the original on-chain transaction was reversed.
Common problems and what to do
The transaction remains pending
Verify that the transaction was actually broadcast and that its fee, nonce, or inputs are valid. A pending transaction has no confirmation, so the recipient cannot verify inclusion yet. Do not send a second conflicting transaction unless you understand the wallet’s replacement rules; doing so can create competing spends or leave you unsure which transaction the service will accept.
The count dropped or the block became non-canonical
A reorganization may have displaced the earlier block. Recheck the transaction hash on the canonical chain. If the transaction is absent, it may return to the pending pool, be replaced by a conflicting transaction, or need to be rebroadcast according to the wallet and network rules.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The chain is included but the exchange has not credited it
Compare the observed count or finality status with the exchange’s current requirement, including any asset-specific or network-specific rule. Provide the transaction hash, block reference, destination address, and timestamps to support staff. Credit policies can remain stricter than the chain’s own status.
Ethereum is not finalizing
Additional block confirmations do not solve every finality delay. A temporary validator participation problem or consensus incident can prevent checkpoints from finalizing. Avoid describing affected transactions as permanently settled until the network reports finalized checkpoints and the receiving service resumes acceptance.
Operational checklist
- Identify the exact network before sending.
- Save the transaction hash and destination details.
- Distinguish broadcast, inclusion, confirmation count, justification, and finalization.
- Use the canonical block, not a stale or orphaned block, for your count.
- Follow the recipient’s written threshold rather than assuming a universal number.
- For high-value transfers, wait for the required status and document the evidence used.
- Recheck live network guidance when protocol parameters or service policies change.
The central distinction is simple but important: confirmations describe how much accepted history follows a transaction; finality describes the strength of the network’s guarantee that the history cannot be removed. Bitcoin increases confidence probabilistically with each block, while Ethereum proof of stake adds an explicit finalized-checkpoint mechanism after a two-thirds validator vote.
