For a company holding a fixed amount of Bitcoin, the gross market value of that holding moves in the same percentage direction as Bitcoin’s price. If Bitcoin rises 10%, the holding’s market value rises 10%; if it falls 10%, the value falls 10%. That arithmetic does not mean the company’s shares or total equity value must move by the same percentage. The number of BTC held, accounting rules, financing, restrictions on the assets, and the company’s other business activities all matter.
The basic calculation: BTC held multiplied by BTC price
A company’s gross Bitcoin holding value is calculated as:
BTC quantity × price per BTC = gross value of the BTC holding

The price has risen 10%, and—because the quantity did not change—the gross value has also risen 10%. If the price instead fell from $60,000 to $54,000, the holding would be worth $54 million, a 10% decrease.

This is a valuation calculation, not a statement that the company received or spent cash. A higher quoted price increases the marked value of the asset; it does not, by itself, put cash in the company’s bank account. Likewise, a lower price reduces the marked value even if the company has not sold any BTC.
Keep the quantity and price dates aligned
Holdings and prices must refer to compatible dates. A company may buy, sell, mine, lend, or otherwise alter its BTC position between reports. Multiplying a quantity reported at one date by a price from another can create a number that was never the value of the company’s actual position at a single point in time.
Companies may also use a specified market and valuation time for financial reporting. Bitcoin trades continuously, so a company may disclose its own period-end method rather than rely on a universal “closing price.” One SEC registrant, for example, said it used the BTC-USD spot price on its identified principal market at 23:59:59 UTC on June 30, 2026, and classified the observable quote as a Level 1 input. That is an issuer-specific method, not a rule every company follows.

What dated company examples show
Company filings make the arithmetic concrete, but their figures are dated disclosures—not current market values or quotes.

The Strategy figures also show why cost basis should not be mistaken for current value. The approximately $76,027 average purchase price and $54.5 billion aggregate purchase price describe acquisition cost as disclosed in the February 13, 2026 filing. The $68,734 price is the filing’s dated market-price reference. They answer different questions: what the company paid, on average, and what the reported holdings would be worth using that reference price.
How Bitcoin’s price appears in financial statements
The asset’s market value and the accounting result are related, but the accounting treatment depends on the applicable rules and the reporting period. Under FASB ASU 2023-08, qualifying crypto assets are measured at fair value, with changes recognized in net income each reporting period. Strategy disclosed that it adopted the standard on January 1, 2025. It said adoption affected its financial results and carrying value, and increased earnings volatility because Bitcoin’s price is volatile.

That accounting change matters when comparing results across periods. A company’s reported net income after adoption may reflect period-to-period fair-value gains or losses, while an earlier period may have been presented under a different accounting treatment. Do not compare two earnings figures as if the accounting basis were necessarily unchanged; check the issuer’s adoption date, policy, and reporting period.

Why the holding value does not determine the company’s share price
A company is more than its BTC position. A change in the market value of its Bitcoin is one input into an assessment of the company, not a formula for its total equity value or share price. Liabilities, financing terms, dilution, operating performance, liquidity requirements, and investor expectations can all affect how the market values the business.

For that reason, the answer to “If Bitcoin goes up 10%, does a company holding Bitcoin become worth 10% more?” has two parts:
- The gross BTC holding: rises 10% if the company’s BTC quantity remains fixed and the price used for both calculations rises 10%.
- The company’s equity or stock: is not mechanically required to rise 10%. Its value reflects the rest of the company and how investors assess the holding, its financing, risks, and prospects.
Even the first part changes if the quantity changes during the comparison period. A company that adds BTC can have a larger holding value even if the unit price is flat or lower; a company that sells BTC can have a smaller holding despite a price increase. Separate the price effect from the quantity effect before drawing conclusions.

Check whether the BTC is available and what exposure the company has
The headline BTC balance does not always tell the full story about liquidity or economic exposure. Holdings can be pledged as collateral, loaned, held in custody, or affected by derivatives and settlement arrangements. Those terms may affect the company’s ability to use or transfer the assets, or alter its exposure to price movements, even when the reported BTC quantity is unchanged.

Read the notes on collateral, lending, custody, derivatives, and settlement rather than treating every reported coin as freely available cash-equivalent value. A fair-value figure answers what the asset is measured at under the disclosed method; it does not by itself explain restrictions, obligations, or the timing of access.
Bitcoin also does not generate cash flows merely because a company holds it. The issuer’s filings identify custody costs, cybersecurity threats, counterparty risk, market risk, and liquidity risk. These are relevant to the company’s ability to hold or use the asset and to the uncertainty around its value. They are not captured by multiplying the BTC quantity by a spot price.
A practical way to compare company Bitcoin holdings
When comparing two issuers—or the same issuer over time—use a consistent set of questions. A larger headline holding does not automatically mean a stronger balance sheet or a more valuable company.
- Record the quantity and date. Identify how many BTC the company reported and the date that balance applies to. Look for subsequent purchases, sales, mining, lending, or other treasury changes before comparing it with another figure.
- Identify the valuation price and method. Note the price per BTC, its timestamp, the market or source used, and whether the figure is a market quote or the company’s reported fair value. Do not substitute a different exchange price or timestamp without explaining the change.
- Separate cost from fair value. Purchase cost or average acquisition price describes what the company paid; period-end fair value describes a measurement at a specified reporting date. Neither should be labeled as the other.
- Check accounting policy and period. Determine which accounting treatment applies and whether the issuer adopted a new standard during the period being compared. Consider how fair-value changes flow into reported earnings.
- Read for restrictions and financing. Check whether BTC is pledged, loaned, or otherwise restricted, and review related derivative, debt, settlement, and liquidity arrangements.
- Put the holding in company context. Review liabilities, operating results, potential dilution, and cash needs. The gross BTC mark is only one part of that picture.
This sequence keeps three questions distinct: how many BTC the company owns or reports, what those units are worth at a disclosed date and price, and how the position affects the company’s broader financial condition. It also helps prevent a price movement from being confused with a change in the number of coins or with a realized cash gain.
Common interpretation errors
- Calling a dated valuation “current.” The February and April 2026 Strategy figures and June 2026 registrant figures above are historical reporting snapshots. Bitcoin prices and company holdings can change after those dates.
- Using a price without its timestamp or source. Continuous trading means a quote depends on when and where it was observed. An issuer’s disclosed period-end price is specific to its method.
- Assuming fair value equals cash proceeds. A mark is not proof that the company sold the BTC or could immediately realize that amount after costs, restrictions, or settlement terms.
- Comparing earnings across different accounting bases without checking. ASU 2023-08 adoption can change how fair-value movements appear in net income; confirm the issuer’s adoption date and disclosures.
- Equating asset performance with stock performance. The BTC asset’s percentage move does not dictate an identical move in total equity or share price.
What Strategy says about its holdings
Strategy Inc.’s Form 10-K states: “We view our bitcoin holdings as long-term holdings and expect to continue to accumulate bitcoin.” This is the company’s own stated position, not an independent assessment of its future purchases or the likely value of its holdings.
