Bitcoin plays two distinct roles in academia: it is a subject of research across fields such as economics and computer science, and it is part of a broader area of blockchain and digital-payments research that universities and public programs may fund. Funding for this work usually comes through grants, fellowships, or scholarships—not from Bitcoin itself. Cryptocurrency-based research funding has been proposed, but the cited proposal is not evidence of an established funding model.

How is Bitcoin used in academic research?

Researchers study Bitcoin as a technical system and as an economic and social phenomenon. Its interdisciplinary character is reflected in a 2019 bibliometric study that identifies economics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science among relevant fields.

That study found 1,162 papers in the Web of Science Core Collection using the topic term “bitcoin” and reported that the earliest publications in its dataset dated to 2012. The figure describes that database and query at the time of the study; it is not a current count of all Bitcoin scholarship. Read the bibliometric analysis.

University research examples show how the subject overlaps with neighboring areas. Texas McCombs lists work on Bitcoin’s relationship to stablecoin markets, cryptocurrency transaction graphs and price movements, and the drivers of cryptocurrency returns. It also lists research on consensus, permissioned blockchains, and blockchain-based health identity. Those latter examples concern the wider blockchain field and should not be assumed to be Bitcoin-specific. See the Texas McCombs Blockchain Initiative.

Can researchers get funding for Bitcoin research?

Yes, but opportunities are commonly framed more broadly than Bitcoin. University initiatives and public programs may support work on blockchain, distributed systems, cryptocurrency, cryptography, or digital payments. A project involving Bitcoin may fit a program’s scope, but eligibility and fit depend on the specific call.

Funding mechanisms also differ. A faculty research grant is not the same as a graduate fellowship, scholarship, or public prize. Some initiatives support related activities such as curriculum, events, or infrastructure as well as research. Applicants should verify who can apply, what costs are eligible, the application window, and reporting requirements directly with the funder.

Examples of institutional and public funding

Funder and scope Who or what the source describes Funding type and status
Berkeley Haas, United States Ripple-supported faculty and student grants for blockchain, distributed systems, cryptocurrency, digital payments, and related areas. Proposal page lists grant categories and amounts with 2023 start dates and a Spring 2023 student award. These are historical details, not current openings. Program overview; Proposal details.
Texas McCombs, United States UT Austin faculty and graduate students may submit proposals in blockchain, distributed systems, cryptocurrency, digital payments, and related cryptography; the initiative also describes limited graduate fellowships. University initiative and fellowships. The cited page does not establish a current application deadline. Initiative details.
European Commission, European Union Blockchain projects supported primarily through Horizon programmes. Public grants and prizes. The Commission reports approximately €180 million in prizes and grants through Horizon 2020 from 2016 to 2019; this is a historical total, not a current allocation for Bitcoin research. European Commission funding information.
University of Nicosia, Cyprus UBRI-supported postdoctoral fellowships, master’s scholarships, research activities, validator infrastructure, and curriculum work. Fellowships, scholarships, and institutional support. The overview does not establish current application windows or universal eligibility. UBRI at the University of Nicosia.

These examples illustrate different routes rather than a complete list of available funding. The Berkeley page’s dates are explicitly historical, and the Texas McCombs and University of Nicosia overviews do not supply current open-call deadlines. Does Bitcoin itself fund science?

Not in the sense established by the institutional examples above: those describe organizations funding research about blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and digital payments. A 2017 article in Ledger proposed a different idea—a research fund financed through cryptocurrency investment, with attention to staking coins and masternode mechanisms. Its authors presented this as a possible supplementary funding stream, not a complete solution. The proposal covers cryptocurrency broadly; it does not establish a Bitcoin-specific grant program or show that this model is proven or widely adopted. Read the 2017 proposal in Ledger.

How to assess a Bitcoin research funding opportunity

  • Check the subject fit. Determine whether the call names Bitcoin specifically or funds broader categories such as blockchain, cryptocurrency, distributed systems, or digital payments.
  • Confirm eligibility. Calls may be limited to faculty, graduate students, or institutional teams. Do not assume an individual researcher can apply directly.
  • Identify what support covers. Establish whether it funds research costs, fellowships, scholarships, teaching, events, infrastructure, or some combination.
  • Verify the mechanism and terms. A grant, fellowship, scholarship, prize, and investment proposal are different arrangements. Review payment terms and reporting obligations in the current call.
  • Check the dates with the funder. Historical award amounts and deadlines do not establish that a program is open now. Confirm the latest status and requirements with the institution or public agency.
