Bitcoin mining is a proof-of-work competition in which specialized computers repeatedly hash block-header data until one result is numerically below the network’s target. The miner that finds a valid result broadcasts the block; nodes verify it and add it to the chain. In return, the winning miner receives the block subsidy plus the transaction fees in that block.

Most industrial and home miners use SHA-256 ASICs and connect to a mining pool. Solo mining keeps the entire reward but has extreme payout variance; pool mining produces smaller, more regular payments based on contributed work. The current subsidy is 3.125 BTC per block after the 20 April 2024 halving, but fees, electricity, hardware efficiency and uptime determine whether mining is profitable.

What Bitcoin mining actually does

Mining is the mechanism that turns a set of pending Bitcoin transactions into a confirmed block while making the transaction history expensive to rewrite. The Bitcoin Developer Guide summarizes its purpose this way: “Mining adds new blocks to the block chain, making transaction history hard to modify.”

Mining does not mean creating coins by solving a useful mathematical puzzle, nor does it involve decrypting wallets. A miner is searching for a valid proof of work. The work consumes computation and electricity, and the result can be checked quickly by every node on the network.

Bitcoin.org compares the process to a “competitive lottery.” Each hash attempt is effectively a lottery ticket, but miners with more computing power can buy more tickets per second. The difficulty target is adjusted by the protocol so that the network continues to produce blocks approximately every ten minutes, regardless of how much total mining equipment is online.

How a Bitcoin block is mined

1. Mining software assembles a candidate block

Mining software receives transactions and selects which ones to place in a candidate block. It must follow Bitcoin’s consensus rules, including transaction validity and block-size limits. The software also constructs the block header, an 80-byte data structure that commits to the proposed block.

The header includes a reference to the previous block, a Merkle-root commitment to the selected transactions, a timestamp, a difficulty-related target representation and a nonce. Changing any committed field changes the header hash, so miners can search a vast space of possible headers.

2. The ASIC searches for a qualifying hash

The software sends the header information and the network target to an ASIC miner. The ASIC computes Bitcoin’s SHA-256 hashing algorithm at very high speed, changing the nonce and, when necessary, related header data such as the extra nonce embedded in the coinbase transaction. Each attempt produces a 256-bit number.

The attempt succeeds only when that number is numerically lower than the current target. A hash that looks random and has many leading zeroes is not accepted because of its visual appearance; the exact numerical comparison with the target is what matters. The target is periodically adjusted through Bitcoin’s difficulty mechanism to preserve the approximate ten-minute block interval.

3. A successful miner broadcasts the block

When an ASIC finds a qualifying header, the mining software attaches the full transaction set and broadcasts the block to other nodes. Nodes independently check the proof of work, the header, every transaction, the coinbase transaction and the block’s position on the best valid chain.

If the block passes validation, nodes relay it and miners begin working on the next block, building on the newly accepted tip. A competing valid block can occasionally be found at nearly the same time; subsequent blocks and the consensus rules determine which branch becomes part of the chain.

What an ASIC miner is

An ASIC is an application-specific integrated circuit designed for one narrow task. A Bitcoin ASIC is optimized for SHA-256 hashing, unlike a general-purpose CPU or GPU that can run many different programs. The specialization delivers vastly greater hashes per second per watt for Bitcoin mining, but it also makes the hardware useful for little else.

In a typical setup, a control board or mining computer maintains the pool connection and job data while several ASIC hash boards perform the calculations. The machine needs a suitable power supply, continuous network connectivity and cooling. A high-output ASIC converts most of its electrical input into heat and produces substantial fan noise, so a residential installation may require a dedicated circuit, ventilation or hosted space.

ASIC specifications that matter

Specification Why it matters How to evaluate it
Hashrate Determines how many SHA-256 attempts the machine makes each second and therefore its share of expected block-finding work. Compare machines in terahashes per second (TH/s), but consider the complete operating profile rather than peak figures alone.
Energy efficiency Electricity is usually the largest recurring cost. Use joules per terahash (J/TH). Lower is better, provided the figure reflects the intended operating mode.
Purchase cost Capital must be recovered from future mining revenue. Verify the exact model, delivery condition, warranty and shipping or import costs. Current model prices and availability change and were not established here.
Power requirements An undersized circuit or incompatible voltage can prevent safe operation. Check the miner’s wattage, input voltage, plug type and power-supply requirements before buying.
Noise and heat Fans and heat affect where the machine can run. Plan for ventilation, acoustic isolation and safe exhaust; do not assume a living space is suitable.
Firmware and controls Firmware determines monitoring, tuning and security options. Use reputable firmware, restrict administrative access and keep recovery procedures for configuration failures.
Hosting and electricity A machine can be technically efficient but financially negative at a high power rate. Calculate energy cost, demand charges, hosting fees, downtime allowances and maintenance before deployment.

Solo mining versus mining pools

Approach How rewards are received Variance and operational trade-offs
Solo mining The miner that discovers a valid block receives that block’s subsidy and transaction fees, subject to the protocol’s maturity and spendability rules. Very high variance. A miner may find a block quickly or wait an extremely long time, even when its long-run expected share is unchanged. The operator keeps the full reward but bears all infrastructure and connectivity responsibilities.
Pool mining The pool receives the block reward when one of its participants finds a full-target block, then distributes payments according to its published payout formula. Lower variance and more predictable payments, offset by pool fees, payout thresholds, counterparty exposure and dependence on the pool’s accounting and uptime.

For most small operators, a pool is the practical choice because an individual machine’s probability of finding a block is tiny relative to the global network. Solo mining can make sense when an operator values full control, has substantial hashrate, accepts irregular income or treats the activity as a lottery rather than a steady cash-flow business.

How pooled mining works

Pool jobs and shares

A pool assigns each connected miner a candidate job. The pool sets a target that is easier than the Bitcoin network target. When a miner finds a hash below the pool target, it submits a “share.” A share usually does not produce a valid Bitcoin block, but it proves that the miner performed a measurable amount of work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Occasionally, a submitted share also meets the full network target. In that case, the pool has found a block and submits it to the Bitcoin network. The pool records the shares from participating miners over the relevant accounting period and uses them to allocate the reward.

Payout formulas and fees

Payment methods differ. A proportional method pays according to a miner’s accepted shares relative to the pool’s accepted shares for the accounting period. Other pool designs may smooth payments by paying a fixed amount per valid share or by combining transaction-fee treatment with the subsidy. The precise formula, fee, minimum payout and treatment of stale or rejected shares must be read in the pool’s current terms.

Before connecting equipment, check:

  • the pool fee and whether it is deducted from the subsidy, transaction fees or both;
  • the payout method, accounting window, minimum withdrawal and payment frequency;
  • how stale, duplicate and rejected shares are handled;
  • whether the pool supports the region, wallet format and connection protocol you need;
  • security controls such as account-based two-factor authentication, withdrawal locks and worker monitoring.

A pool is a financial counterparty as well as a technical service. A high hashrate share does not guarantee reliable payments, so review its current rules, incident history and custody practices rather than choosing solely by advertised size.

Bitcoin block rewards and the halving schedule

A miner’s protocol-level revenue has two components: the block subsidy and the transaction fees included in the block. The subsidy is newly issued bitcoin. Fees are paid by users whose transactions are included, and their amount varies with demand for block space.

A 2026 SEC filing records that the 20 April 2024 halving reduced the subsidy from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. The same disclosure describes blocks as arriving approximately every ten minutes and subsidies halving every 210,000 blocks, roughly once every four years. The 3.125 BTC amount is the current post-halving subsidy stated in that filing; future halvings will reduce it again, while actual fee revenue depends on network activity.

Reward component What it is What can change it
Block subsidy Protocol-defined new issuance awarded to the miner or pool that finds a valid block. Halvings every 210,000 blocks. The subsidy fell from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC on 20 April 2024.
Transaction fees Fees attached to transactions selected for the block. Transaction demand, fee rates, the miner’s transaction-selection policy and the available block space.

Because a halving cuts the subsidy while hardware and electricity costs do not automatically fall, it can materially change mining economics. Operators should model revenue under several fee levels and avoid treating the 3.125 BTC subsidy as the miner’s net income: pool fees, power, hosting, repairs, financing, taxes and downtime still apply.

How to evaluate a mining setup

Estimate expected revenue

Start with the machine’s hashrate divided by the network’s total hashrate, then apply the expected block subsidy and a realistic estimate of transaction fees. A pool calculator can simplify this estimate, but its output is only a projection because network difficulty, fees, exchange rates and machine uptime change.

Calculate operating cost

Convert the miner’s power draw into kilowatt-hours: watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by 24 hours and the number of operating days. Multiply that usage by the all-in electricity rate, including demand charges where applicable. Add hosting, internet, maintenance, replacement fans, pool fees and any taxes or financing costs.

Stress-test the result

  • Use a lower-than-expected bitcoin price and transaction-fee scenario.
  • Allow for downtime, stale shares, repairs and seasonal cooling costs.
  • Model the effect of the next subsidy reduction rather than assuming current revenue persists.
  • Check whether the circuit, building and insurer permit continuous high-load equipment.
  • Set a shutdown rule for sustained negative cash flow or unsafe temperatures.

Operational risks and troubleshooting

Low or zero hashrate

Confirm power delivery, network connectivity, pool credentials and the assigned mining URL. A failed power supply, overheated hash board or outdated firmware can leave the control interface online while one or more boards stop hashing. Review per-board telemetry instead of relying only on the headline hashrate.

High rejected or stale shares

Rejected shares can indicate incorrect work, unstable hardware, firmware problems or a pool connection issue. Stale shares often result from latency or from the miner continuing an old job after a new one arrives. Use a geographically closer pool endpoint where available, verify system time and investigate packet loss before increasing clock speeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Excessive temperature or noise

Clean air paths, maintain appropriate intake and exhaust clearance and monitor temperatures continuously. Do not defeat thermal protections merely to raise hashrate. If the site cannot safely remove the heat, move the equipment to a properly designed hosted environment rather than operating it in an enclosed room.

Wallet and custody mistakes

Configure the payout wallet carefully and test a small payment when the pool permits it. Protect pool credentials, enable available account security and keep wallet backups offline. A valid mining payment sent to an incorrect address is generally irreversible.

What miners should verify before buying or connecting

  • Exact ASIC model, hashrate, J/TH rating and operating-mode assumptions.
  • Power draw, voltage, plug, circuit capacity and local electrical code requirements.
  • Noise, heat removal, fire safety, insurance and landlord or data-center rules.
  • Purchase price, shipping, warranty, spare parts and realistic delivery date.
  • Electricity or hosting rate, pool fee, payout formula and minimum payout.
  • Wallet security, tax treatment and a plan for the next halving.
  • Current network difficulty, fee conditions and pool statistics, rather than historical figures alone.
