Bitcoin mining revenue is the value of the bitcoin a miner earns from a block’s subsidy and included transaction fees. In BTC, add those two amounts; in US dollars, multiply that BTC total by a BTC/USD price chosen for the same block or reporting period. This is gross revenue, not profit.

The formula for Bitcoin mining revenue

For one block, gross revenue in bitcoin is the block subsidy plus the transaction fees in that block. To report the result in US dollars, multiply the BTC total by a BTC/USD price selected for that block or for a clearly defined measurement period:

Gross revenue (BTC) = block subsidy (BTC) + included transaction fees (BTC)

The units matter: BTC plus BTC produces BTC, and multiplying BTC by dollars per BTC produces dollars. BTC price is a conversion factor; it is not another source of bitcoin paid to the miner.

For a day or other multi-block period, first add the subsidy and fees across the blocks counted in that period. Then convert that BTC sum using a stated price convention, such as a documented daily average or a spot observation at a specified time. Pairing a daily BTC total with an unrelated price timestamp can make the USD figure misleading.

It is useful to keep the calculation in two stages. First determine how many BTC are attributable to the block or period. Then decide how to value those BTC in dollars. This separation makes it easier to explain a change in a reported result: the BTC proceeds may have changed, the conversion price may have changed, or both may have changed.

For example, if two blocks have identical subsidy-plus-fee totals but are valued using different BTC/USD prices, their reported USD revenues differ even though the amount of bitcoin earned is the same. Conversely, two blocks can produce different BTC totals because their included fees differ, even if both use the same price convention. A useful report shows both the native BTC total and its dollar valuation.

What makes up the BTC amount

Block subsidy: protocol issuance

The subsidy is the newly issued bitcoin component of a block’s reward. Its amount follows the Bitcoin protocol’s subsidy schedule and is separate from fees paid by users. A current subsidy figure should be tied to the relevant block height or period: without that qualification, a number can give the wrong impression about which blocks it describes. No current block-height-specific subsidy amount is established here, so the formula is more useful than an unqualified amount.

The subsidy is not calculated from a miner’s electricity use, equipment, or the dollar price of bitcoin. It is the protocol-issuance component associated with the block. That distinction matters when comparing gross proceeds with a mining operation’s economics: costs may determine whether mining is profitable for an operator, but they do not change the subsidy portion of the block reward.

When reporting a period rather than one block, count the subsidy amounts for the blocks included in that period. Do not treat one block’s subsidy as the total for a day or another multi-block interval. If a report supplies a current subsidy figure, label the applicable block height or period so readers can tell what the figure represents.

Transaction fees: value assigned by included transactions

A transaction’s fee is the difference between the total value of its inputs and the total value of its outputs. A miner that includes the transaction in a block can claim that difference. The block’s total fee revenue is the sum of the fees for the transactions included in it.

A fee rate and fee revenue describe different things. A fee rate is a price per unit of transaction size; it is not the total number of BTC a miner earns from fees. Total fee revenue depends on the fees of the transactions actually included. It varies with demand for block space and with transaction selection, so it can change even when the subsidy does not.

This is why a single transaction’s fee rate cannot be substituted for the block’s aggregate fee income. To find the total, consider the transactions included in the block and sum their fees in BTC. A high fee rate on one transaction does not by itself tell you how much all the included transactions contributed. Likewise, a block’s total fees are a sum of transaction fees, not a per-unit rate.

The block’s coinbase transaction collects the two sources of proceeds described in the formula: protocol issuance under the subsidy schedule and fees from transactions included in that block. The word “coinbase” here refers to the special transaction in the block, not to an exchange or market price. For revenue calculations, keep the subsidy and fees visible as separate inputs before adding them together.

How BTC price changes the reported dollar revenue

Once the BTC proceeds are known, the selected BTC/USD price changes their dollar valuation. If the subsidy and fees total the same number of BTC in two calculations, a different BTC price can still produce a different USD revenue figure. Conversely, a change in BTC-denominated proceeds can reflect different fee totals even if the price convention is unchanged.

Keep the native BTC amount visible when comparing dollar estimates. That lets a reader tell whether a reported change came from mining proceeds, the exchange-rate conversion, or both. The price source, timestamp or averaging window, and the block or period represented should accompany any calculated dollar figure. No live BTC quote is established here, so a current USD example should not be filled in with an undated price.

There is no single price convention implied by the revenue formula. A report could use a timestamped spot observation or a documented daily average, but it should say which one it chose. The convention should match the measurement being described as closely as possible: a daily BTC total should be paired with an identified daily valuation rule, while a block-level estimate should identify the price observation used for that block.

Because BTC/USD is a market conversion, it can move independently of the number of BTC earned. A rise in price can increase reported USD revenue without any increase in subsidy or fees in BTC. A lower price can reduce the USD valuation even when the BTC proceeds are unchanged. State the BTC total and the price input separately so the source of any change remains clear.

A worked example without inventing a market price

Suppose a block has a subsidy of S BTC and included fees totaling F BTC. Let P be the BTC/USD price selected for the block’s stated measurement time:

  1. Calculate fees in BTC: sum the fees of the transactions included in the block to obtain F.
  2. Add the subsidy: S + F is the block’s gross proceeds in BTC.
  3. Choose a matching price: identify P in USD per BTC, and state its source and timestamp or averaging rule.
  4. Convert to dollars: multiply (S + F) by P. The result is gross USD revenue for that block under that price convention.

For a daily calculation, replace the single-block subsidy and fee amounts with their totals across the blocks in the chosen day, then apply a price convention that represents that day. The symbolic example keeps the calculation reproducible without presenting an unverified dollar amount as current.

To make the example auditable, a reader should be able to see what went into each symbol: which block or period supplied S and F, how fees were summed, and how the value of P was selected. The formula is simple, but omitting the measurement window or price convention can leave two otherwise correct calculations difficult to compare.

Revenue, a miner’s payout, and profit are not interchangeable

The formula gives gross proceeds before operating costs. It does not subtract electricity, facility or hosting charges, ASIC purchase cost or depreciation, pool fees, financing, or taxes. Profit cannot be inferred from gross revenue alone; calculating it requires the relevant cost and payout inputs for the operator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gross revenue is therefore a starting point, not a complete measure of a mining business. Two operators could face the same network or block revenue while having different electricity, hosting, equipment, financing, or other costs. The revenue formula by itself does not reveal those costs and cannot establish which operator, machine, or operation is profitable.

Network or block proceeds also do not tell you what every participant receives. A solo miner that finds a block keeps its proceeds but faces greater payout variance because income depends on finding a block. A pool distributes proceeds among contributors under its payout method, generally using shares or contributed work. A pool’s block proceeds are therefore not automatically the payout of an individual participant.

This distinction is important when reading a pool or individual miner estimate. The network-level amount describes proceeds generated by blocks; an individual participant’s payout depends on whether they mined solo or contributed work through a pool and on the pool’s distribution method. Solo mining has higher payout variance because the miner waits for a block they find themselves. Pool participation distributes proceeds among contributors, rather than giving every participant the full proceeds of a block.

ASICs perform the header-hashing work used in Bitcoin mining, but hardware is not needed to understand or calculate revenue. The revenue equation describes proceeds; it does not establish whether a particular machine or mining operation is profitable.

How to compare two mining-revenue estimates

Before treating two figures as comparable, check what each one measures. These distinctions prevent a BTC amount, a dollar valuation, and an operator’s economics from being mixed together.

Comparison What to check Why it matters
BTC versus USD Compare native BTC proceeds separately from the BTC/USD price used for conversion. A dollar change can occur without a change in BTC earned.
Subsidy versus fees Show protocol subsidy and transaction fees as separate components before adding them. They have different sources, and fee revenue varies with included transactions and block-space demand.
Block versus period Identify the block or the complete period whose subsidy and fees were aggregated. A period total cannot be interpreted as a single-block amount.
Price convention State the price source and timestamp or averaging window used for the same measurement period. An unmatched price can distort the USD conversion.
Gross revenue versus profit Keep operating costs separate from the gross proceeds formula. The formula does not account for an operator’s costs.
Block proceeds versus participant payout Identify whether the figure is for a block, a pool, or an individual miner. Pool distribution and solo-mining variance affect what a participant receives.

When the estimates disagree, compare their inputs rather than assuming one formula is necessarily different. Check first whether both use the same unit and period, then whether each includes both subsidy and fees, and finally whether USD conversion uses a stated and compatible price convention. If the question is about an individual miner’s take-home amount, also check whether one estimate is network or block proceeds and the other is a pool or participant payout.

Common calculation mistakes

  • Calling the gross amount profit: the formula contains no operating expenses or other cost inputs.
  • Counting price as an earned component: price converts a BTC amount into USD; it does not add BTC to the block proceeds.
  • Using fee rate as total fees: a rate per unit of transaction size is not the sum of fees in a block.
  • Combining mismatched periods: a daily BTC total and a price from an unrelated time do not describe a consistently valued daily result.
  • Reporting a subsidy without its scope: tie a current amount to the block height or period it applies to.
  • Equating pool revenue with a miner’s payout: the pool’s proceeds are distributed among contributors under its payout method.
  • Leaving out one of the BTC components: subsidy-only figures omit fees, while fee-only figures omit protocol issuance. Label a component-only figure rather than presenting it as total gross revenue.
  • Hiding the price convention: a USD result is hard to reproduce if it does not identify the price source and timestamp or averaging window.

A practical reporting checklist

A clear mining-revenue estimate should make its inputs auditable. Include these items alongside the result:

  • The block height or the start and end of the reporting period.
  • Subsidy in BTC, identified for the blocks counted.
  • Total included transaction fees in BTC.
  • Gross proceeds in BTC before conversion.
  • For a USD figure, the BTC/USD price source and timestamp or averaging rule.
  • Whether the figure describes a block, network or pool proceeds, or an individual participant’s payout.
  • A separate accounting of costs if discussing profit rather than gross revenue.

Use the checklist in the order of the calculation: define the period, record the subsidy and fees, add them in BTC, and only then convert to dollars. If the result is meant to describe a miner rather than a block or network total, make the pool or solo context explicit. If the result is meant to describe profit, provide cost information separately rather than implying that the gross revenue equation already accounts for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Bitcoin mining revenue calculated?

For a block, add the block subsidy in BTC to the fees in BTC from transactions included in that block. To report gross revenue in USD, multiply the BTC total by a BTC/USD price selected for the same block or a clearly defined measurement period.

Do Bitcoin miners earn from transaction fees?

Yes. A transaction fee is the difference between the value of its inputs and outputs, and a miner including the transaction can claim that difference. The block’s fee revenue is the sum of fees from the transactions it includes. A pool distributes proceeds among contributors under its payout method.

Does Bitcoin price affect mining revenue?

BTC price affects the USD valuation, not the number of BTC in the subsidy-plus-fees total. The same BTC proceeds can have different reported dollar values at different prices, so a calculation should state its price source and timestamp or averaging window.

The Bottom Line

Bitcoin mining revenue in BTC is the block subsidy plus included transaction fees. Multiply that total by a clearly matched BTC/USD price to express gross revenue in dollars. Keep the native BTC amount visible, identify the block or period and price convention, and treat costs, pool distributions, and solo-mining variance as separate questions—not as part of the revenue formula.
