Battlefield 6 separates appearance from combat setup. Use Loadouts to choose weapons, gadgets and class equipment, but use the soldier or vehicle customization screens to change skins, uniforms, camouflage and other cosmetics. Your class, faction, character, playlist rules and progression path determine which items appear and where they can be used.
The practical rule is simple: edit a loadout for performance, then open the relevant soldier or vehicle customization menu for appearance. Most cosmetic rewards are optional and do not replace the gameplay items that are available through normal progression.
What a loadout changes—and what it does not
Before a match, Battlefield 6 asks you to choose one of four classes: Assault, Engineer, Support or Recon. The Loadouts menu is the equipment workspace. It controls your primary and secondary weapons, gadgets and other combat choices, and EA says you can change loadouts during a match.

A cosmetic skin is handled separately. Changing a uniform, soldier skin, weapon finish or vehicle camouflage does not change the weapon statistics, gadget availability or class progression attached to your combat setup. If you want a different look without changing how the class plays, stay in the customization area rather than replacing the loadout.

Each class has a signature weapon, a passive signature trait and Field Specs that add perks as class progression advances. Those are gameplay systems, not visual slots. A skin can communicate the class identity, but it does not grant the trait or Field Spec; those come from selecting and progressing the class.
How classes and weapon restrictions interact
Battlefield 6 uses two weapon-rule approaches. In most modes, weapons are open: any class can equip any weapon type. Some playlists use closed weapons, where a class is limited to its class-specific signature weapons. The restriction belongs to the playlist and class rules, not to the cosmetic item you are wearing.
| Class | Class identity | Weapon access in open-weapon modes | Weapon access in closed-weapon playlists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Signature weapon, passive signature trait and Field Specs | Any weapon type | Class-specific signature weapons |
| Engineer | Signature weapon, passive signature trait and Field Specs | Any weapon type | Class-specific signature weapons |
| Support | Signature weapon, passive signature trait and Field Specs | Any weapon type | Class-specific signature weapons |
| Recon | Signature weapon, passive signature trait and Field Specs | Any weapon type | Class-specific signature weapons |
This means a rifle, shotgun or other weapon can be legal on a class in one mode and illegal in another. A cosmetic unlock does not bypass a closed-weapon rule. If a weapon disappears from the selection screen, check the playlist rules and the selected class before assuming that the item has been removed from your account.
Where to equip a soldier skin or uniform
Soldier appearance is selected by faction and character. Use this path for the NATO and Pax Armata sides:
- Open Loadouts.
- Choose NATO or Pax Armata.
- Select a soldier.
- Open the soldier-parts option.
- Select the character you want to edit.
- Choose Customize.
- Review the earned unlocks shown for that character and equip the available skin.
The same general pattern applies when you customize other classes, weapons and vehicles: start from Loadouts, select the relevant category and item, then open its customization view. If an item is missing, first confirm that you are editing the correct faction and character. EA notes that some skins are available only for one faction.
Why a skin may not appear on another soldier
A character-level unlock is not automatically a universal uniform. The official documentation describes skins and earned unlocks attached to a character, with faction restrictions in some cases. A skin earned for one character may therefore be absent when you edit another character, even if both belong to the same side.

Can you mix and match every uniform piece?
Do not assume that Battlefield 6 supports unrestricted helmet, shirt, trouser and armor combinations. The documented customization flow confirms character-level skins and earned unlocks, but it does not promise Battlefield V-style free mixing of every individual component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDICE has also described a deliberate class-recognition goal. Producer Alexia Christofi said the team wants players to express themselves with “cool skins” while keeping the result grounded and authentic to the franchise. Senior producer David Sirland gave Recon’s ghillie material as an example: it is used on Recon skins and not on the other classes to emphasize the differences.
Those statements describe the design direction, not a guarantee that every future cosmetic will use exactly the same restriction. In practice, treat the available options shown for the selected character as the authoritative list. If the menu offers only a complete character skin, there is no documented method to split that skin into independent clothing pieces.
How to customize vehicles
Vehicle appearance and vehicle progression are managed independently from soldier cosmetics. To equip a vehicle skin or camouflage:
- Open Loadouts.
- Select Vehicles.
- Choose a vehicle type.
- Select the specific vehicle.
- Select the vehicle image to open Cosmetic Customization.
- Choose an earned skin, camouflage or other available visual item.
Vehicle XP comes from using the vehicle, its equipment, objectives, kills and assists. That XP unlocks additional skins, camouflage and weapons tied to the vehicle’s progression. A vehicle cosmetic does not transfer automatically to every vehicle in the same broad category; edit each specific vehicle that you want to customize.

Battlefield 6 uses several progression tracks. They overlap in the sense that all can produce rewards, but each has different requirements and restrictions.

| Unlock route | How it advances | Examples of rewards or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Player progression | Earn XP toward Player Level 99, then continue into S-levels. | Weapons, vehicles, gadgets and cosmetics can appear in the progression rewards. |
| Class progression | Play a class to advance its Field Specs and other class progression. | Class perks and identity-related progression; this is separate from simply equipping a skin. |
| Weapon mastery | Use a weapon and meet its mastery criteria. | Attachments and cosmetic rewards. EA gives 40 weapon kills as an example milestone that can award a weapon skin and a Mastery Badge for the Player Card. |
| Vehicle mastery | Earn vehicle XP through use, equipment, objectives, kills and assists. | Vehicle skins, camouflage and weapons for that vehicle. |
| Battle Pass | Complete weekly challenges, earn Career XP or purchase tier skips. | Season 2 has more than 100 tiers; free tiers include functional content such as weapons. |
| Edition or membership bonuses | Use the entitlement attached to a purchased edition or eligible membership. | Phantom Edition includes a Phantom Squad Soldier Skin pack, two weapon packages, a vehicle skin and a combat-knife skin. EA Play members receive a launch Deployment Pack with cosmetics and an XP boost. |
| Event rewards and Twitch Drops | Claim the reward during the relevant promotion or event. | Twitch Drops appear on the first platform used after claiming and cannot be transferred to another platform. |
Player levels and S-levels
EA’s 2025 progression briefing describes Player Level 99 as the point before S-level progression begins. XP earned through normal play contributes to that track, so cosmetic unlocks can arrive alongside functional equipment rather than through a separate store-only system.
Weapon and vehicle mastery
Mastery rewards are tied to use of the individual weapon or vehicle. The 40-kill example is a milestone, not a universal promise that every item uses the same number. Check the mastery panel for the exact criteria on the item you are using. Because vehicle XP also includes objectives, assists and equipment use, a driver or crew member can progress without relying only on final blows.
Is the Battle Pass required for gameplay items?
No. EA’s FAQ says seasonal updates will continue and that gameplay-impacting content—including weapons, gadgets and maps—is intended to be free or earnable. A premium pass is an optional route to additional seasonal rewards, not a requirement to participate in the core game.
For the documented Season 2 pass in 2026, the premium Battle Pass costs 1,100 BFC and contains access to premium tiers. The season has more than 100 tiers, with progression from weekly challenges, Career XP and purchased tier skips. Battlefield Pro adds premium tiers, skips and boosts. Free tiers can include functional items such as weapons, so a player who does not buy the pass can still earn gameplay content placed on that free track.
Battlefield Currency, premium tiers, edition bonuses and cosmetic packs are monetization options. They can shorten the route to a cosmetic or add exclusive appearance items, but they do not turn a cosmetic skin into a class ability or bypass closed-weapon playlist rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Faction, character and platform restrictions
- Faction: Some soldier skins are available only for NATO or only for Pax Armata.
- Character: Unlocks shown in a character’s customization menu may not be available to another character.
- Class identity: Visual elements such as Recon’s ghillie material are intended to preserve recognizable class differences.
- Playlist: Open-weapon modes allow any class to equip any weapon type; closed-weapon playlists limit classes to their signature weapons.
- Platform delivery: Twitch Drops appear on the first platform used after claiming and cannot be transferred.
These restrictions explain most apparent “missing” cosmetics. Before contacting support, switch to the faction, character, vehicle or platform associated with the reward and check the correct customization category.

A practical setup routine before and during a match
- Choose the mode first. Determine whether the playlist uses open or closed weapons.
- Select the class. Confirm the signature weapon, passive trait and Field Specs you intend to use.
- Build or edit the loadout. Select weapons and gadgets in Loadouts. You can change to another saved loadout during the match.
- Set the appearance separately. From the same Loadouts area, choose the faction, soldier and character, then use Customize.
- Check the reward’s scope. A soldier skin, weapon finish, vehicle camouflage, Player Card badge and charm are different reward types; equip each in its own category.
- Verify eligibility. If an item is locked or absent, check faction, character, mastery progress, Battle Pass tier or event-claim status.
Troubleshooting common cosmetic problems
“I unlocked a skin, but I cannot find it.”
Open the exact category that matches the reward. Soldier skins are under the selected faction and character; vehicle cosmetics are under Loadouts > Vehicles and then the specific vehicle. A weapon skin will not appear in the soldier customization menu.
“The skin works on one side but not the other.”
Some cosmetics are faction-specific. Switch between NATO and Pax Armata and inspect the corresponding character rather than looking for a universal inventory list.
“My weapon is unavailable after changing modes.”
Check whether the new playlist uses closed weapons. In that ruleset, the class can use its class-specific signature weapons only. Cosmetics do not override this restriction.
“My Twitch Drop is not on my other platform.”
The official missing-content guidance says the drop appears on the first platform used after claiming and cannot be transferred. Use that original platform when checking the reward.
“I expected to combine individual clothing pieces.”
The documented system confirms character-level skins but does not guarantee unrestricted component mixing. Use the options exposed for that character; if only a complete skin is listed, individual helmet, shirt, trouser or armor selection is not documented for that item.
