Solar panels produce electricity while sunlight is available, but demand can remain high—or rise—after the sun goes down. A battery helps bridge that timing gap: it charges when solar generation is abundant and releases stored electricity later. It shifts energy through time; it does not create additional energy, and the amount it can deliver depends on its capacity, discharge rate, duration and conversion losses.

Why solar generation and evening demand can miss each other

Solar output follows the availability of sunlight, so it declines as the day ends. Electricity use does not necessarily decline at the same time. People may still need power in the evening, and grid demand may remain high even as solar production falls. The result is a timing mismatch between when some electricity is produced and when it is wanted.

Energy storage addresses that mismatch by taking in electricity at one time and making it available at another. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes solar-plus-storage as a way to balance generation and demand: a system can charge when generation is high and consumption is low, then discharge when demand rises, including after sunset. DOE’s overview of solar energy and storage also explains that storage can help smooth variations in solar output.

How a battery moves solar electricity into later hours

When solar generation exceeds the electricity being used at that moment, a connected battery can absorb some of the available electricity. That electricity is stored as energy. Later, when solar output has fallen and the system is called on to supply power, the battery discharges: it delivers electricity to a home or, at grid scale, to the electricity system.

The sequence is simple, but the details matter. The battery must have room to charge when solar power is available, and it must retain enough stored energy to discharge during the later period. The timing and amount of charging and discharging depend on the system’s configuration and how it is operated. In some market contexts, batteries charge during sunny daytime hours when solar output is high and prices are low, then discharge as evening or overnight demand and prices rise. That pattern is described by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), but it is not a universal schedule or price rule. EIA’s discussion of battery storage places dispatch in the context of particular electricity markets.

A battery is therefore a time-shifting resource, not a second generator. It can make some solar electricity available later, but the quantity available is limited by what was stored and by the energy lost as electricity is converted and retrieved. DOE notes that storage is not perfectly efficient. The delivered amount is consequently less than the amount put into storage; the sources cited here do not establish one efficiency percentage that applies to every system.

  • Energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh), describes how much energy the battery can store.
  • Power capacity, measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW), describes how quickly it can deliver that energy.

A large energy capacity does not by itself mean a battery can meet a large demand at once. A system also needs sufficient power capacity to deliver electricity at the rate required. Conversely, a battery able to discharge at a high rate may run out sooner if its stored energy is limited.

Duration at a particular output is calculated by dividing energy capacity by power capacity. For example, EIA’s illustration of a 100 MWh battery discharging at 25 MW gives a nominal duration of four hours: 100 MWh divided by 25 MW. This is a full-output calculation, not a promise of four hours of usable electricity under every operating condition. EIA notes that operating limits and losses affect actual delivery. EIA explains battery duration and use in its March 25, 2022 article.

How long a battery can help after sunset

Storage systems are used for different durations and purposes. A battery designed to address a short fluctuation in solar output is not necessarily suited to supplying electricity through a long period of low renewable production. A longer discharge period requires enough stored energy for the intended output over that period; the power rating must also match the demand it is meant to serve.

EIA describes four-to-eight-hour systems as commonly used for daily load shifting, including moving solar electricity into evening peaks in solar-rich regions. That range describes a use category, not a universal design recommendation and not a guarantee that a particular battery will supply all nighttime demand. The relevant duration is always tied to the battery’s energy capacity, its discharge power and the way it is operated.

This distinction helps explain what “meeting demand after sunset” can mean. A battery may cover some demand for some hours, reduce the amount that must be supplied by other resources, or help manage a particular evening peak. Whether it can cover all demand for the whole night is a separate question that cannot be answered from duration alone. It depends on the size of the load, the stored energy available, the system’s power limits and losses, and the dispatch plan.

Household batteries and grid-scale storage solve different problems

The same charge-and-discharge principle applies at different scales, but the loads and purposes differ. A homeowner may connect a battery to rooftop solar so stored electricity can be used at night or during an outage. DOE presents those as household uses of solar-plus-storage. Actual operation depends on the system configuration; the household example does not imply that a single home battery can supply an entire community or grid.

Grid-scale batteries operate as part of the electricity system and can shift energy from periods of stronger solar production toward periods of greater consumption. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) analyzes both distributed and utility-scale solar-plus-storage systems and identifies shifting energy from peak production to peak consumption as a system benefit. NLR’s solar-plus-storage analysis covers those distinct segments. They should not be treated as interchangeable: a household battery is sized and configured for a home’s needs, while a utility-scale installation serves a different system role and scale.

A named project illustrates the pairing, not a universal blueprint

DOE identifies the AES Lawai Solar Project in Kauai, Hawaii, as a solar project paired with a 100-megawatt-hour battery. The figure describes the energy capacity cited for that named project. It illustrates how solar generation and storage can be paired, but it is not a current national total, a standard project size or evidence that every solar installation needs the same battery capacity. DOE’s solar integration overview provides the project example.

For any specific project, the useful questions are how much energy the battery can store, how quickly it can discharge, how long it is expected to operate at the relevant output and when it is scheduled to charge. Those details determine the contribution more directly than the label “solar-plus-storage.”

What storage can and cannot guarantee

Storage can make solar-generated electricity available after the generation period, help balance supply and demand, and—depending on configuration—provide resilience or smooth changes in solar output. Those benefits do not mean that a battery can eliminate every shortfall. Its stored energy is finite, its output rate is limited, and conversion and retrieval consume some of the energy. DOE’s Solar-Plus-Storage 101 describes household nighttime use and outage backup, while its solar integration overview discusses balancing generation and demand.

Nor does storage by itself determine whether a particular home or region will have enough electricity through every evening or overnight period. That assessment requires matching the expected load and desired coverage period to the battery’s usable energy and power limits, while accounting for operation and losses. Short-duration storage can help with brief variations; longer-duration storage addresses longer periods of low renewable production. Neither description, on its own, establishes that a system can cover every demand scenario.

How to judge whether a storage claim answers your question

When a project is described as able to shift solar power into the evening, look for the operating details behind that claim rather than relying on the word “battery” alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stored energy: Check the energy capacity in kWh or MWh and whether the figure refers to the energy available for the intended use.
  • Delivery rate: Check the power capacity in kW or MW and compare it with the demand the system is intended to serve.
  • Discharge period: Relate the energy and power figures to the number of hours of operation at the stated output. Treat the quotient as nominal duration, not a guaranteed operating result.
  • Dispatch timing: Determine when charging and discharging are expected to occur; the schedule depends on the system and operating context.
  • System scale and purpose: Distinguish a home battery for household use from a grid-scale battery used for system-level load shifting.
  • Losses and limits: Account for conversion and retrieval losses, as well as operating limits, rather than assuming all stored electricity reaches the load.

These checks separate a useful statement about shifting energy from a broader claim about uninterrupted supply. A battery can help solar meet later demand when it stores enough energy, can release it at the needed rate and is dispatched at the right time. The amount of demand it covers—and for how long—must be judged against those system-specific limits.
