Battery energy storage can lower a data center’s electricity bill by charging when power is cheaper or the facility’s load is low, then discharging during expensive intervals or the site’s billing peak. That discharge supplies part of the data center’s demand, reducing grid purchases and, under tariffs with demand charges, potentially lowering the billed peak in kilowatts.
The savings are not automatic. They depend on the utility tariff, the facility’s interval-by-interval load, battery power and usable energy, dispatch controls, round-trip losses, interconnection rules, and the energy that must remain reserved for reliability. A battery can reduce a bill component without reducing total costs if it is too small, dispatched at the wrong time, or operated primarily as outage reserve.
What peak electricity costs mean for a data center
A data center bill usually has at least two different components that storage may affect:

A time-of-use tariff may charge different energy prices in different hours.
- Demand charges are based on a measured power peak, commonly in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW), during a defined interval or set of peak periods. The highest observed consumption can determine a substantial part of a commercial bill.
The exact billing formula varies by utility and location. Some rates use time-of-use energy prices, monthly non-coincident demand, a utility system’s coincident peak, or combinations of these. Before sizing a battery, obtain the facility’s actual tariff and determine precisely which interval, meter, threshold, and season control the charge. A battery that shifts kWh but does not reduce the relevant kW measurement may produce little demand-charge value.

Power and energy are separate engineering limits. A battery rated at 10 MW can offset up to 10 MW of load at a moment, subject to inverter and operating limits. Its MWh rating determines how long it can sustain that output. A 10 MW/10 MWh system has about one hour of nominal full-power duration; usable duration is lower after reserve requirements, state-of-charge limits, conversion losses, and degradation are considered.
How can a data center lower peak electricity costs with battery storage?
- Measure the load and tariff. Collect interval meter data at the same resolution used for billing, often 5, 15, or 30 minutes. Mark energy-price periods, demand-charge windows, coincident-peak rules, holidays, and seasonal changes.
- Charge outside the target peak. The battery draws electricity when the site load is lower or the energy price is lower. Charging increases grid demand at that time, so the control system must avoid creating a new bill peak.
- Detect an approaching peak. An energy-management system forecasts facility demand and compares it with the tariff’s demand threshold. It can use real-time meter data, weather, workload schedules, and historical patterns.
- Discharge before or during the expensive interval. The inverter supplies part of the data center load. If the battery output is large enough and begins early enough, the grid meter records a lower peak.
- Replenish energy while preserving reserve. After the event, the battery can recharge in a lower-cost period, but only the energy above the reliability reserve is available for routine price management.
This is commonly called peak shaving when the objective is to reduce the maximum billed power. It is called energy arbitrage or time shifting when the objective is to charge at a lower energy price and discharge at a higher one. One system can provide both services, but only when its power, duration, cycling limits, tariff, market rules, and reliability policy allow simultaneous value streams.
Peak shaving versus energy arbitrage
| Feature | Peak shaving | Energy arbitrage |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | A measured demand peak, usually kW or MW | A difference between energy prices over time, usually $/kWh or $/MWh |
| Typical dispatch trigger | Forecast that the site will exceed a demand threshold during the billing window | Low-price charging period followed by a high-price discharge period |
| What determines value | Demand-charge rate, peak threshold, battery MW, and whether discharge overlaps the measured interval | Price spread, battery MWh, round-trip efficiency, cycling cost, and number of viable cycles |
| Main failure mode | The battery misses the interval or is empty when the site peak occurs | Losses and operating costs exceed the price difference |
| Reliability conflict | Peak-shaving energy may be unavailable for an outage | Arbitrage may leave insufficient state of charge for emergency operation |
The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes both uses: storage shifts electricity from peak periods to other times, and commercial or industrial customers can use on-site storage to reduce demand and associated demand charges. EIA also identifies emergency backup as a storage use. The same stored energy cannot be assumed available for all purposes at once.

What determines the size and savings of a battery?
Interval load shape
A monthly energy total is not enough. Two facilities can consume the same MWh but have very different peaks. Use interval data to identify how often peaks occur, how long they last, whether they are predictable, and whether multiple buildings or utility meters peak together. A short, sharp peak may need high MW and modest MWh; a several-hour peak needs substantially more usable energy.

Tariff structure
Map every charge the battery could affect. A time-of-use energy rate rewards shifting kWh between price periods. A demand charge rewards reducing the highest measured kW, but only during the tariff’s specified window. A coincident-peak charge may depend on the utility system’s peak rather than the customer’s own monthly maximum, making the event harder to predict. DOE’s January 2025 brief on electricity rate designs for large loads explains that regulators are evaluating cost allocation, resource adequacy, stranded-asset risk, and rate structures for very large customers such as data centers.
Battery power, energy and usable state of charge
The inverter’s MW rating limits instantaneous load offset. The battery’s MWh rating and allowed state-of-charge range limit duration. Controls must account for minimum and maximum state of charge, reserve energy, temperature, degradation, and the battery’s maximum charge and discharge rates. Do not infer a universally correct duration for a data center from a generic “four-hour battery” label; the tariff and load study determine the useful duration.
Efficiency and cycling
Charging and discharging consume energy. Round-trip efficiency means that more electricity must be purchased for charging than can later be delivered. Include conversion losses, auxiliary loads, degradation, maintenance, financing, interconnection, controls, and any market fees in the economic model. A price spread that looks attractive before losses can disappear after those costs.
A practical feasibility assessment
A defensible project model should use at least one full year of interval data when available, because seasonal tariffs, weather, maintenance outages, and annual peak behavior matter. Build the analysis in these stages:

- Reconstruct the bill. Recalculate historical monthly charges from interval data and the tariff. Confirm that the model reproduces actual bills before adding storage.
- Define operating priorities. State the minimum emergency reserve, maximum permitted cycles, ramp limits, and conditions under which reliability overrides bill savings.
- Simulate dispatch. Test forecast-based peak shaving, time-of-use arbitrage, and combined operation. Include imperfect forecasts and missed peaks rather than assuming perfect knowledge.
- Apply technical constraints. Model MW, MWh, inverter limits, state-of-charge boundaries, charging availability, round-trip efficiency, degradation, and interconnection limits.
- Calculate avoided charges. Separate energy-charge savings, demand-charge savings, and any other contracted revenue. Do not combine customer bill savings with utility-system benefits.
- Compare costs and risks. Include installed project cost, financing, software, augmentation, fire-protection requirements, insurance, maintenance, replacement, and the cost of maintaining backup capability.
The reviewed federal and laboratory sources do not establish a universal installed cost, payback period, or data-center battery specification. A project owner should therefore treat any generic return-on-investment claim as unsubstantiated until it is tied to the site’s tariff and measured load.
What the published evidence shows
A modeled Google data-center scenario
A 2020 paper by Dabbagh, Hamdaoui, and Rayes modeled a Google data-center cluster using a 29-day load trace. Comparing a case without peak shaving with an optimal peak-shaving case, the authors reported a 31% reduction in the modeled electricity bill and $86,000 in monthly savings. Those are results from that research scenario, based on its assumptions, input prices, load trace, and optimization method. They are not an observed current bill, an industry average, or a prediction for every data center.
U.S. storage scale
EIA reported 8,842 MW of power capacity and 11,105 MWh of energy capacity for operational U.S. utility-scale battery storage at the end of 2022. This figure describes utility-scale capacity across the country; it does not mean that data centers owned that capacity or that it was available to reduce a particular customer’s bill. EIA’s March 17, 2026 market-trends update summarizes reported deployment and is not a rigorous economic evaluation of why projects were built.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory published Storing Affordability: Battery Storage as an Asset to Reduce Data Center Cost Shifts (PNNL-39627) on September 22, 2026. The report considers behind-the-meter storage at data centers, front-of-the-meter utility-scale storage, and aggregation of smaller installations. Its scope includes utility and ratepayer effects as well as data-center-related costs. A utility’s avoided grid investment or reduced wholesale exposure is not the same thing as a customer’s retail bill savings.

Deployment options
| Pathway | Owner and dispatch authority | Potential target | Key questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Behind the meter | Data-center owner, host, or contracted operator; dispatch occurs at the facility connection | Retail energy and demand charges, resilience, and possibly approved grid services | Does the battery sit behind the billed meter? Can it meet interconnection and fire-safety requirements? What reserve is mandatory? |
| Front of the meter | Utility, independent power producer, or market participant | Wholesale price volatility, system capacity, grid congestion, and reliability | Who receives the value, and does the data center’s tariff credit any benefit? What market participation rules apply? |
| Aggregated smaller systems | An aggregator coordinates multiple customer or community batteries | Combined flexibility, demand response, and system-level affordability | How are dispatch rights, customer overrides, performance payments, and outage reserves allocated? |
These pathways are not interchangeable. A front-of-the-meter project may reduce utility-system costs without changing a data center’s demand charge. A behind-the-meter system may directly lower a customer’s bill but face site-space, interconnection, permitting, and operational constraints.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability: the reserve cannot be spent twice
DOE notes that data-center demand is growing rapidly, varies by region, and often requires firm power continuously. EIA lists emergency backup as a storage application. That makes reliability policy a design input, not an afterthought.
- Define the outage duration and critical loads the battery is expected to support.
- Specify the minimum state of charge that must remain unavailable for routine peak shaving.
- Decide whether the battery may discharge during a price event when an outage or grid emergency is forecast.
- Coordinate battery controls with generators, UPS systems, transfer equipment, cooling systems, and the data center’s existing resiliency architecture.
- Document who can override economic dispatch and how the system returns to its reserve target after an event.
A battery sized for a few hours of tariff management is not automatically a replacement for the facility’s full backup design. Conversely, a battery held at a high reserve level may have less energy available for arbitrage than its nameplate MWh suggests.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every peak is predictable
Unexpected workload surges, cooling demand, equipment tests, and weather can create peaks outside the schedule. Use rolling forecasts, conservative thresholds, and a control margin rather than waiting until the meter has already exceeded the target.

Using average prices instead of the billed interval
Monthly average rates hide the price and demand windows that determine value. Reconstruct the tariff at the utility’s actual interval and include seasonal and holiday rules.
Ignoring charging demand
Charging can create a new demand peak. Set charging limits, schedule replenishment in low-load periods, and verify the resulting meter profile in simulation.
Promising unlimited services
Peak shaving, arbitrage, frequency or capacity services, and outage response compete for the same MW, MWh, and state of charge. Define a priority stack and test conflicts under worst-case conditions.
Quoting a case study as a benchmark
The 31% and $86,000 figures come from one modeled 29-day Google-cluster scenario. Present them only with that attribution and qualification; they do not establish what another facility will save.
How storage fits into a broader data-center energy plan
DOE identifies grid infrastructure, clean generation and storage, energy efficiency, demand resources, and tariff design as complementary tools for managing data-center demand growth. Batteries can shift load and provide flexibility, but they do not eliminate the need for adequate generation, transmission, distribution capacity, or well-designed rates. Efficiency measures that permanently reduce cooling or computing demand may lower both energy and demand charges, while flexible workloads can reduce the amount of battery capacity needed.
For a U.S. facility, the next decision should be based on its local utility tariff and interconnection rules rather than a national savings percentage. For facilities outside the United States, demand-charge definitions, market rules, taxes, and reliability requirements may differ substantially.
