A barrier photodetector converts light into an electrical signal by absorbing photons in a semiconductor, creating mobile electrons and holes, and guiding those carriers to contacts. Engineered energy-band offsets determine which carriers can cross the device. In a unipolar-barrier design, the barrier is intended to block a carrier flow that contributes to dark current while allowing the signal-producing carriers through.
The result can be read as photocurrent or, in photovoltaic operation, as a photovoltage. The exact carrier blocked, wavelength range, bias, temperature and performance depend on the detector’s materials and band alignment; there is no single specification that represents every barrier photodetector.
The conversion chain: from an absorbed photon to a measured signal
Every barrier photodetector follows the same broad sequence, even though the layer materials and band diagrams differ.
1. The absorber captures photons
Incident photons enter an active semiconductor layer. Photons with suitable energy are absorbed when they can promote electrons across the material’s band gap. Each absorption event creates mobile charge carriers—an electron and a hole. The absorber’s composition and band gap therefore set the part of the spectrum the detector can respond to. This is why devices built from different semiconductor systems target different wavelength ranges.

“Unipolar” does not mean that illumination creates only one kind of charge. Light still creates electron–hole pairs. The term describes what the barrier does to transport: it is engineered to impede one carrier population more strongly than the other.
2. Interfaces shape carrier transport
A barrier detector is a heterostructure. Adjacent layers have different compositions, doping or electronic properties, so their conduction and valence bands do not line up flatly at the interface. The resulting band offsets form an energy barrier for one carrier type. Layer thickness, doping, composition and the position of each interface are design variables that determine how high and how wide that barrier appears to electrons or holes.
A built-in field, an externally applied bias, or both then provide the direction needed for useful transport. The device must be designed so that the desired photocarriers have a practical path to a contact while the unwanted carrier flow is impeded.

Photogenerated carriers that move through the absorber and barrier reach electrical contacts. Their net movement is a photocurrent. In a circuit that measures voltage instead of current, carrier separation produces a photovoltage. Classical barrier-layer descriptions distinguish short-circuit current from open-circuit voltage; modern devices can likewise be characterized in either current or photovoltaic modes.
4. The external circuit reads the signal
With illumination modulated or switched, the change in current or voltage relative to the dark condition is the optical signal. The measured value depends on bias, temperature, optical power, wavelength, geometry and the readout circuit. A detector’s responsivity or noise cannot be interpreted without those conditions.

What the barrier adds
Without selective transport, carriers that flow in the dark can obscure a weak optical signal. A unipolar barrier is placed and shaped to suppress that unwanted flow. The design objective, stated in a 2016 review by M. Kopytko and A. Rogalski, is: “The barrier detector is designed to reduce dark current and noise without impending photocurrent (signal).” In paraphrase, the barrier should lower dark current and associated noise without impeding photocurrent.
This is a balancing problem rather than a simple insulating layer. If the barrier is too low, the unwanted carriers continue to pass and dark-current suppression is weak. If it is too high, too wide or placed incorrectly, it can also impede the photocarriers that carry the signal. Interface defects, unsuitable doping and an unfavorable band offset can produce the same failure even when the nominal layer sequence looks correct.

nBn: a practical example of a unipolar barrier detector
The nBn architecture is a widely used example in infrared detector discussions. Its name describes an n-type region, a barrier layer, and another n-type region. The barrier is inserted between the two n-type sides rather than using a conventional p–n junction as the principal carrier-selective element.
| Feature | nBn barrier detector | Conventional p–i–n photodiode |
|---|---|---|
| Basic layer arrangement | n-type region, barrier, n-type region | p-type region, intrinsic region, n-type region |
| Main field or selectivity mechanism | Engineered conduction- or valence-band offsets create a unipolar barrier | Junction and space-charge region establish a field that separates photocarriers |
| Dark-current strategy | Block a majority-carrier flow that contributes to dark current while preserving a low-offset path for the desired signal carriers | Use the junction structure and depletion region to collect carriers; it is not defined by a separate unipolar blocking barrier |
| Carrier interpretation | The blocked carrier depends on the material band alignment; an infrared nBn example uses an electron-blocking barrier and allows optically generated holes to pass | Both photogenerated carrier types are separated and collected by the junction field |
A 2022 review of photodetector characterization describes the nBn concept as replacing the conventional space-charge region with a unipolar electron-blocking barrier while allowing optically generated holes to pass. That description applies to the architecture being discussed, not to every barrier detector. Other unipolar arrangements can block holes instead, depending on which band offset is engineered.
The nBn label also should not be treated as a synonym for the entire category. Unipolar barrier photodiodes can use other layer sequences, and newer implementations extend the concept to different material families.

How band alignment decides whether the detector works
Barrier height and band offsets
The conduction-band offset determines the energy obstacle seen by electrons; the valence-band offset determines the corresponding obstacle for holes. A useful design creates a substantial offset for the carrier associated with dark current but only a small transport penalty for the signal carrier. The required alignment is specific to the absorber, barrier material and contacts.
Barrier location
Moving the barrier changes which carriers encounter it first and how far photocarriers must travel before collection. The absorber must still receive enough light and provide a path to the collecting contact. A barrier placed in the wrong part of the stack can reduce photocurrent even if its band offset is otherwise suitable.
Doping and thickness
Doping changes the carrier concentrations and electrostatic potential around an interface. Thickness affects the probability that carriers can cross the barrier and the distance over which they must travel. These parameters are coupled: changing one can alter the effective field and the transport path through the others.
Interface quality
Real interfaces can introduce defects or unintended charge. Such states can trap carriers, increase leakage or change the intended band alignment. Fabrication therefore requires control of epitaxial growth or other layer formation, passivation and contact processes, not just selection of a nominal barrier material.
Why reducing dark current matters
Dark current is the electrical current measured without the intended illumination. It consumes signal headroom and contributes to noise, making weak optical changes harder to distinguish. A barrier reduces dark current by suppressing a carrier population that would otherwise cross the device in the dark.

The benefit is especially important in infrared detectors, where thermal effects can produce substantial unwanted carrier flow. Properly engineered barriers can enable useful operation at higher temperatures in some infrared material systems, reducing cooling demands. That is a potential benefit, not a universal property: the achievable temperature and noise depend on the specific absorber, barrier, contacts, geometry and bias.
Dark-current reduction does not automatically mean higher overall performance. A barrier that lowers leakage but also cuts photocurrent can reduce responsivity. Device evaluation must therefore examine dark current, noise and illuminated response together.
Material systems and what can vary
HgCdTe infrared detectors
HgCdTe is a major infrared material system discussed in the barrier-detector literature. Its composition can be adjusted to address different infrared bands, but the required band engineering is demanding. The 2016 HgCdTe review notes that a valence-band discontinuity at the absorber–barrier interface complicates implementation. This is a material-specific design challenge, not evidence that all barrier architectures share the same limitation.
Van der Waals heterostructures
A 2021 article in Nature Electronics demonstrated the unipolar-barrier idea in van der Waals heterostructure photodetectors. Atomically thin or layered materials can form sharply defined interfaces without the same lattice-matching requirements as conventional epitaxy. Their transport physics, contacts and fabrication constraints still have to be analyzed for the particular stack; the shared principle is selective carrier transport created by band alignment.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Historical barrier-layer cells
The underlying idea predates modern semiconductor heterostructures. Russell H. Varian’s paper, published on 15 December 1934, analyzed current direction in barrier-layer cells and related it to different energy-loss processes for photoelectrons in a metal and semiconductor. That historical explanation should not be conflated with the modern unipolar nBn architecture. The common thread is an energy barrier influencing photo-generated charge, while the materials and device physics are different.

How to compare real barrier photodetectors
There is no class-wide performance number for barrier photodetectors. Responsivity, dark current, noise, spectral response and operating temperature vary with material, geometry, bias, temperature and measurement method. The following axes make a comparison meaningful when the devices are measured under matched conditions.
| Comparison axis | What it tells you | Conditions that must accompany the value |
|---|---|---|
| Spectral range or cutoff wavelength | Which photon energies the absorber can detect | Material composition and the stated spectral-response measurement |
| Dark current | How much current flows without intended illumination | Temperature, bias, device area and whether the value is measured per device or normalized |
| Noise | How strongly electrical fluctuations limit weak-signal detection | Measurement bandwidth, bias, temperature and readout conditions |
| Responsivity or quantum efficiency | How much electrical signal is produced for a given optical input | Wavelength, optical power, bias, temperature and calibration method |
| Operating temperature and cooling | Whether the detector can meet its target performance under a practical thermal budget | Material system, bias and the performance level being specified |
| Response speed or bandwidth | How quickly the detector follows changing light | Carrier transit, capacitance, device geometry and the readout circuit |
| Fabrication complexity | How difficult it is to reproduce the required layers and interfaces | Growth method, band-offset control, passivation, contacts and array/readout compatibility |
A measurement workflow that separates barrier benefits from trade-offs
Characterization reviews emphasize that detector claims need controlled electrical and optical measurements. A practical sequence is:
- Record the dark current. Measure current over the intended bias range with the optical input blocked, and record the device temperature and active area.
- Measure illuminated current or voltage. Repeat at known wavelengths and optical levels so the change from the dark condition is separated from the baseline current.
- Check the spectral response. Scan wavelength or use defined spectral bands to identify the absorber’s response and the cutoff behavior.
- Quantify noise under the same operating point. State bandwidth, bias and temperature; noise values from different conditions are not directly interchangeable.
- Test speed if timing matters. Apply a modulated optical signal and report the response time or bandwidth together with the electrical load and readout.
- Compare the illuminated and dark results together. A successful barrier suppresses unwanted dark transport without imposing a disproportionate loss in photocurrent.
Common design and interpretation mistakes
Assuming every barrier blocks electrons
Some infrared nBn examples use an electron-blocking barrier, but the blocked carrier is determined by the actual band diagram. Inspect the conduction- and valence-band offsets before assigning the barrier’s role.

Illumination generally produces electron–hole pairs. Unipolar describes selective transport through the heterostructure, not the number of carrier species created by absorption.
Quoting a performance figure without conditions
A dark-current, responsivity or noise value has meaning only with its temperature, bias, wavelength, geometry and measurement bandwidth. A figure from one HgCdTe device cannot be presented as representative of van der Waals detectors or the entire barrier-detector class.
Calling every layered photodiode an nBn
nBn specifically denotes the n-type/barrier/n-type arrangement. Other barrier photodiodes may use different doping sequences or carrier-selective layers while following the same broader principle.
Ignoring photocurrent loss
Lower dark current is not enough. If the barrier height, thickness or interface traps prevent signal carriers from reaching the contacts, the detector can become less useful despite a cleaner dark measurement.
Bottom line
Barrier photodetectors work by combining photon absorption with deliberately selective carrier transport. The absorber creates mobile electrons and holes; engineered band offsets and fields steer them toward contacts while a unipolar barrier suppresses an unwanted dark-current path. nBn detectors illustrate the idea, but the correct carrier assignment and expected performance must always come from the specific material stack, band diagram and measurement conditions.
