Banks can use AI to sift through security and operational data, flag activity that may indicate an attack, and help security teams investigate and respond. But AI is a signal-generating capability, not a guarantee: poor data, model errors, evasion, sensitive-data exposure, and dependence on outside technology providers can all weaken it. Effective protection still depends on people, sound software, tested response plans, and other layers of security.
How do banks use AI to detect cyberattacks?
Security teams face more activity to review than people can assess manually in real time. Machine-learning systems can help sift through large volumes of relevant data and flag patterns that warrant investigation. Depending on a bank’s systems and risks, the inputs might include security or operational records; there is no single standard set of data or AI architecture used by every bank.
The useful way to think about an AI alert is as a lead for assessment, not proof of an attack. A security team or an automated workflow may investigate the signal, decide whether it requires escalation, and support containment or response. Automation can help move detection and response along, but the system’s output still has to be judged in context.

This is one part of operational resilience. A joint statement from the UK Financial Conduct Authority, Bank of England, and HM Treasury on 15 May 2026 describes the need for protective, detective, threat-containment, and response capabilities. The BIS Financial Stability Institute’s 9 September 2026 analysis identifies faster threat detection and incident response as potential defensive benefits of frontier AI. Neither source establishes the performance of any particular bank’s deployment.

How widespread is AI use in banking?
European Central Bank Banking Supervision said on 3 June 2026 that more than 85% of banks under European banking supervision use artificial intelligence. The figure comes from the ECB’s annual data collection on banks’ use of innovative technologies. It covers AI use generally—not the share of banks using AI specifically to detect cyberattacks.
In the same speech, “Strengthening operational resilience for the age of AI,” the ECB said: “Used responsibly, AI can help banks strengthen their operations, improve risk management and enhance IT security.” The statement describes potential uses, not a measured cybersecurity outcome. The sources cited here do not establish a comparable bank-specific detection-accuracy rate, false-positive rate, or cybersecurity adoption percentage.
Can AI cybersecurity systems be fooled?
Yes. AI systems can produce unreliable results when their data or operating conditions are unsuitable, and attackers may try to evade or manipulate them. The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 19 May 2025 report on AI in financial services identifies risks that apply to systems used in that sector:
- Weak or unsuitable data: Incomplete, erroneous, outdated, poorly labeled, or contextually unsuitable data can degrade a model’s output. An alert can be misleading, or relevant activity may not be recognized.
- Model error and drift: A model may underperform, with financial or reputational consequences. Models that change dynamically can also be harder to validate than traditional systems.
- Evasion or manipulation: An attacker may exploit weaknesses in an AI system or try to make it reach the wrong decision, including by avoiding the patterns it is designed to flag.
- Confidentiality risks: Misuse, weak data handling, or model-related attacks may expose sensitive information. The Federal Reserve’s 22 November 2024 speech on AI in the financial system also discusses confidentiality and related risks.
These risks do not mean every model will fail in these ways. They do mean a bank needs to assess the data, model behavior, and consequences of an incorrect output rather than treating an AI-generated alert as inherently reliable.

What happens when AI misses a cyberattack?
A missed or misclassified signal can leave a threat for other controls or people to find. Conversely, a misleading alert can consume investigators’ time or prompt an unnecessary escalation. Those are operational consequences to account for; the available sources do not quantify how often either outcome occurs at banks using AI.
AI can also affect the attacker’s side of the contest. The BIS Financial Stability Institute’s 9 September 2026 paper describes frontier AI as a potential accelerator of vulnerability discovery and exploit development. The European Banking Authority’s June 2026 risk assessment likewise highlights how AI may change cyber risks and the time available to respond. If attackers can move faster, a bank may have less time to identify a vulnerability, patch it, or contain an intrusion.
That pressure makes detection only one part of the response. A model that raises an alert cannot compensate for a patching backlog, an unclear escalation path, or a response plan that has not been adapted to changing threats.

What controls make AI-supported defenses more resilient?
Supervisory statements and assessments point to a layered program rather than reliance on a single model. The following are cross-jurisdictional principles, not legal advice or a complete statement of requirements for any particular institution. Applicable expectations vary by jurisdiction and bank.

Keep protection, detection, containment, and response connected
The UK regulators’ joint statement of 15 May 2026 identifies all four capabilities as necessary. Banks need a way to assess alerts, escalate credible threats, contain incidents, and respond—not merely a system that flags unusual activity.
Strengthen the software and shorten the patching path
The European Banking Authority’s June 2026 risk assessment recommends attention to software quality, source-code protection, reducing attack surfaces, and faster vulnerability identification and patching. These measures address weaknesses that detection alone cannot remove.
Update continuity and ICT response plans
The same EBA assessment calls for continuity arrangements and ICT response plans that account for faster vulnerability discovery and changing threats. Plans should make clear how an institution will act when the time to investigate or patch is compressed.

AI-related risk belongs within governance and risk-management frameworks, including oversight of critical ICT third-party providers. A bank that depends on an external provider needs to account for that dependency as part of operational risk. The 31 July 2026 statement from the European Banking Authority, EIOPA, and ESMA addresses governance and ICT risks associated with frontier AI; the Federal Reserve’s 2024 speech also discusses AI risk and applicable legal obligations.
In practice, evaluating an AI-supported detection capability means asking what data and threats it covers, what a false alarm or missed threat could cost, how the model is validated and monitored, how quickly a person can review and escalate an alert, how it handles manipulation or data changes, and what external-provider dependencies it introduces. No single performance ranking follows from the available evidence.
