Bacteria can turn a printed mixture of sand and gel into a stone-like element by growing calcium-carbonate crystals between the grains. ETH Zurich’s process prints the shape first, then hardens it in repeated chemical baths for two to five days at room temperature. The result is a mineral-bonded material aimed at partitions, facade parts and shading components—not yet a proven replacement for structural concrete.
The process: bacteria grow a mineral bridge between sand grains
The method is called microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), or biocementation. The bacteria are not a conventional adhesive. Their urease enzyme controls a reaction that creates the mineral phase doing the bonding. As Karen Antorveza Paez of ETH Zurich put it, “We’re using bacteria to produce a sort of mineral glue.”
- Make the bio-ink. ETH’s printable mixture combines sand, water-based alginate and xanthan gel, plus live ureolytic bacteria.
- Print the geometry. The mixture is deposited as a three-dimensional object before it is cemented.
- Immerse it in the mineralization bath. The bath contains urea and calcium chloride.
- Let the bacteria drive precipitation. Urease breaks down urea and releases carbonate ions. Calcium ions then combine with carbonate to form calcium carbonate, mainly as calcite.
- Lock the grains together. Calcite crystals grow between neighboring grains and form interlocking bridges. Those bridges, rather than the bacteria themselves, provide the mechanical bond.
The printed object is kept in a fresh mineralization bath each day. ETH Zurich and Phys.org reported a mineralization period of two to five days, with the duration selected according to the strength required for the component. It cures at room temperature, so an oven is not required. Once the element has dried, the bacteria are no longer active.

3D biocement printing
This is the route demonstrated with the sand-and-gel bio-ink. It separates shaping from hardening: the printer creates the form, and the baths create the mineral network. ETH has positioned it for architectural components such as facade modules, shading devices and partition walls.

Robotic biocement spraying
In the spray approach, a robotic arm deposits sand, bacteria and mineralization substances in separate streams. Repeated passes build a surface layer by layer instead of immersing a finished printed object. ETH reported a six-month continuous demonstration at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. The route is promising for larger or surface-based work, but its internal grain arrangement and bonding-medium distribution have not yet been characterized as thoroughly as the printed-bath process.
| Route | How bonding is created | Demonstrated direction | Current qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D biocement printing | Printed sand bio-ink is mineralized in daily urea/calcium-chloride baths | Facades, shading devices and partition walls | Most clearly defined workflow; mineralization takes two to five days |
| Robotic biocement spraying | Separate streams are deposited repeatedly and mineralize as the surface builds | Architectural surfaces and larger sprayed forms | Six-month 2025 demonstration; mechanical characterization is less mature |
How architecture controls the result
A 2026 Cambridge Biotechnology Design paper treats biocement printing as a design-to-biofabrication problem rather than simply a new printer material. It identifies porosity, surface-area-to-volume ratio, interlayer connectivity and overhang capacity as coupled variables. Changing one affects how mineralization solution moves through the object and how much surface is available for crystal growth.

What the strength evidence actually shows
More efficient bacterial retention
A 2024 ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces study found that APMDES pretreatment trapped more ureolytic bacteria on sand. Three injections using APMDES-treated sand achieved the same strength gain as seven injections with untreated sand. The authors also reported that the treatment reduced viability, and that the strength difference could not be explained simply by producing more calcium carbonate. This is evidence of a more efficient injection strategy in the tested sand system, not a strength rating for ETH’s printed architectural elements.

Results from airborne-bacteria tests
A 2023 Frontiers study of airborne ureolytic bacteria estimated unconfined compressive strength of 4–8 MPa and 80%–90% precipitation of the calcium source in sand-column MICP tests. Those figures belong to laboratory sand columns. They should not be presented as the structural performance of a 3D-printed wall or facade component.
Earlier selectively deposited structures
An earlier Materials & Design method selectively deposited sand together with urease-active calcium-carbonate powder. Regions containing pure sand acted as removable support, allowing cementation solution to penetrate the printed volume. The approach produced sharply defined boundaries, showing how sacrificial support zones can help preserve complex geometry.

Biocement versus conventional cement-based printing
The useful comparison is not simply “green material versus concrete.” It is whether the material meets the requirements of a particular element: its geometry, permeability, strength, exposure and service life.

| Comparison axis | Bacterial biocement in the reported work | Portland-cement or conventional 3D-concrete comparator |
|---|---|---|
| Curing temperature and energy | Room-temperature curing; ETH reports no oven requirement | No single value stated; depends on the cement mix and curing process |
| Geometry and porosity | Porosity, surface area, interlayer connectivity and overhangs must be co-designed with mineral transport | Depends on the printed mix and reinforcement strategy; no matched value stated |
| Mineralization depth and uniformity | Controlled by bath access, grain formulation and solution penetration; daily bath renewal is used | No matched mineralization metric applies |
| Compressive and tensile performance | Reported MICP values come from sand-column studies, not the ETH demonstrator; load-bearing capacity is not established | Project-specific structural values are normally specified, but no like-for-like test is supplied here |
| Production time | Two to five days of mineralization, depending on target strength | Not stated for a directly comparable element |
| Chemical byproducts | Urea hydrolysis produces ammonium, which requires a treatment or disposal plan | Byproducts depend on the selected cement system |
| Current architectural role | Mortar-like, with demonstrations focused on partitioning, facade, shading and surface elements | Conventional concrete systems have established structural applications, subject to design and code requirements |
Why it is not yet a substitute for structural concrete
ETH researchers describe the present material as closer to mortar than concrete. Several engineering questions remain open: long-term stability, control of grain-size formulations, reproducible mechanical properties and verified load-bearing capacity. The spray process adds another unknown because the arrangement of grains and bonding medium inside the deposited layers still needs more characterization.

That distinction matters when reading strength numbers. A compressive-strength estimate from a column of treated sand cannot establish bending, connection, fire, weathering or fatigue performance for a printed building element. A partition or shading panel can be useful without carrying a building’s primary loads, but it still needs a design-specific assessment for its exposure and connections.
The sustainability question includes ammonium management
MICP avoids oven curing in the ETH workflow, but that does not make every deployment automatically sustainable. Urea hydrolysis creates ammonium as a chemical byproduct. Collection, treatment and disposal therefore have to be included in the process design. “If we don’t factor the disposal of this chemical byproduct into our designs, then unfortunately using biocement for construction won’t be such a sustainable practice,” Paez warned.
The environmental balance will depend on the source of the sand, the amount of urea and calcium chloride, bath recycling, water use, bacterial preparation, drying and the end-of-life pathway. Those variables are not fixed by the word “biocement.”

- Choose the role of the element. Start with a partition, facade, shading or surface component rather than assuming a structural-wall application.
- Design for mineral transport. Set porosity, surface-area-to-volume ratio, interlayer connections and overhangs together so the solution can reach the printed volume.
- Formulate and print the bio-ink. Combine sand, alginate, xanthan gel and the selected ureolytic bacteria, then print the geometry.
- Plan the baths. Provide a urea/calcium-chloride bath, replace it daily during the two-to-five-day mineralization period and manage the ammonium-containing waste stream.
- Dry and test the finished part. After drying, the bacteria are inactive. Mechanical, durability and connection tests must be performed on the actual geometry and mix before any building use.
The technology has passed the “can mineralize printed sand?” stage. The harder question is controlling the resulting properties consistently at architectural scale. As Paez summarized: “The big question is no longer whether biocement works, but rather how well its properties can be managed.”
