Yes—Avast says its antivirus can scan for and remove spyware and help block new infections. On Windows, the protection depends mainly on File Shield, Behavior Shield, and Web Guard, with SmartScan, Quarantine, Network Inspector, and malicious-site blocking adding further layers. That is a description of intended coverage, not a promise that every spyware sample will be detected. Independent testing supports Avast’s general malware protection, but the available test record is not a spyware-only measurement.
What Avast means by spyware protection
Spyware is software that secretly collects information, monitors activity, records credentials, or tracks a user without appropriate consent. It can arrive as a conventional malicious file, a script downloaded from a compromised website, or a seemingly useful application that behaves abusively after installation. Effective protection therefore needs more than a signature scan performed once a week.
Avast’s anti-spyware page describes protection that can scan for spyware, remove detected threats, and block future infections. It highlights SmartScan, Behavior Shield, Quarantine, Network Inspector, and malicious-site blocking as parts of that protection. The product page is a vendor description of capabilities; it should not be read as a guarantee against every monitoring tool or every future sample. You can review the feature description at Avast’s anti-spyware page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe distinction matters because some surveillance applications are installed with the owner’s permission, signed with legitimate certificates, or configured through normal operating-system permissions. Antivirus software may identify suspicious behavior or a known unwanted program, but it cannot decide from technical evidence alone whether a parent, employer, administrator, or partner was authorized to install a monitoring tool.

How Avast’s Windows protection works
Avast’s Windows documentation identifies Core Shields that inspect files, processes, and web traffic while you use the computer. Their roles overlap, so a threat missed by one layer may still be detected by another. The following table uses Avast’s own descriptions and keeps the practical boundaries clear.
| Component | When it operates | Avast-described function | What it means for spyware |
|---|---|---|---|
| File Shield | Before files or programs are opened, run, modified, or saved | Scans programs and files in real time | Can stop a known or suspicious spyware executable at common file-access points |
| Behavior Shield | While Windows processes are running | Monitors processes for suspicious behavior, including behavior from files not yet present in definitions | Can provide a behavioral signal when a previously unknown program acts maliciously |
| Web Guard | During browsing and data transfer | Scans transferred data to help prevent malware, including malicious scripts, from being downloaded and run | Can interrupt a web-delivered infection before the payload executes |
| Quarantine | After Avast identifies a potentially dangerous file | Moves the item to an isolated area where it can be held or submitted to Avast Threat Labs | Separates the item from normal system access while you decide what to do |
| Anti-Rootkit | When enabled in the relevant shield settings | Provides an additional check for rootkit-related threats | Adds a layer for threats designed to hide deeply in the operating system |
| Anti-Exploit | When enabled in the relevant shield settings | Provides an additional exploit-focused protection option | May help when spyware arrives by abusing a software vulnerability rather than by looking like a familiar file |
Avast documents Core Shield settings and says that increasing sensitivity can improve the chance of detecting suspicious activity while also increasing false-positive alerts. The setting is therefore a trade-off, not a free improvement. The documented controls are described in Avast’s Core Shield settings guide.
Can Avast detect and remove spyware?
Known spyware files
If Avast recognizes a spyware file through its definitions or cloud reputation, File Shield can alert when the file is accessed and Avast can place it in Quarantine. A manual SmartScan or deeper scan can also find an item that is already stored on the computer. Detection does not automatically mean that the file is spyware: security products can flag legitimate software, installers, scripts, or administrative tools when their behavior resembles malware.
New or modified spyware
Behavior Shield is the relevant documented defense for suspicious activity from a file that is not yet in Avast’s definitions. This is useful against changing malware, but behavioral detection is necessarily probabilistic. A program that captures keystrokes, injects code, creates persistence, or reads sensitive data may be blocked; a tool that uses ordinary operating-system APIs and stays below detection thresholds may not be.

Web-delivered infections
Web Guard scans data transferred while browsing and is intended to help prevent malicious scripts and other malware from being downloaded and run. It reduces one common route into a system, but it does not make every website safe. A user can still approve a download, install a browser extension, or grant permissions to an application that is not classified as malware.
Removal after detection
Quarantine is isolation, not a diagnostic verdict. An item in Quarantine is prevented from normal use while you review the alert. If you are confident it is malicious, leave it isolated and use Avast’s removal option. If it is a business tool or a file you know to be legitimate, investigate the detection and submit the file to Avast Threat Labs rather than restoring it immediately. Keep a backup before making changes to system files, because deleting a false positive can break an application.
Avast Free Antivirus versus paid features
Avast’s Windows FAQ distinguishes Avast Free Antivirus from Premium Security and identifies Sensitive Data Shield as a Premium Security feature. That means a feature shown on an Avast One spyware page should not automatically be assumed to be present in every Avast product, plan, or country. Product names, bundles, and included shields can vary by region and operating-system edition.
- Avast Free Antivirus: The Windows product is covered by Avast’s Core Shield documentation, and the free edition was the product evaluated in the AV-TEST record discussed below.
- Premium Security: Avast identifies Sensitive Data Shield as a Premium Security feature. Do not infer from that feature’s existence that all Premium-only controls are included in the free edition.
- Avast One: The anti-spyware page presents spyware scanning, removal, and blocking in the context of Avast One. Check the plan comparison shown for your country before relying on a named feature.
Before troubleshooting a missing control, open the product’s subscription or account screen and confirm the exact edition. Installing a different interface or switching platforms can change which shield names and options are displayed.

What independent testing shows—and what it does not
AV-TEST evaluated Avast Free Antivirus versions 26.4 and 26.5 on Windows 11 during its May–June 2026 home-user test cycle. The test covered protection against malware infections, including widespread and prevalent malware. Its record is available at AV-TEST’s Avast Free Antivirus 26.4 and 26.5 page.
This is useful independent context for Avast’s general anti-malware performance, but the cited page does not provide a spyware-only detection rate. It is not accurate to convert a broad malware score into “Avast detects X percent of spyware,” and no spyware-specific number should be quoted from this record. Lab results also apply to the tested product versions, platform, and test period; they do not establish identical performance on macOS, Android, or iOS.
How to configure Avast for the strongest practical coverage
1. Confirm that protection is active
- Open Avast and check the main status screen for an active protection state.
- Verify that the application is receiving updates.
- Do not confuse update access with active blocking. Avast says Windows Passive Mode continues receiving updates and permits manual scans, but it does not provide active protection. If Passive Mode is enabled, turn it off before relying on real-time defense.
Avast’s Windows FAQ explains the Passive Mode limitation and the distinction between manual scanning and active protection at the Windows Antivirus FAQs page.
2. Check Core Shields
- Open Menu and choose Settings.
- Open Protection, then Core Shields (the exact menu wording can vary by product build).
- Confirm that File Shield, Behavior Shield, and Web Guard are enabled.
- Review Anti-Rootkit and Anti-Exploit options if they are available in your edition.
Avast says Core Shields are enabled by default, but users can change their settings. A shield that was disabled for troubleshooting can remain off without producing the same warning as a full product shutdown, so check the controls directly.

3. Run a scan after a suspected exposure
- Start SmartScan from the Avast home screen for a broad first check.
- If symptoms persist, run the deepest on-demand scan offered by your edition and allow it to inspect attached drives and startup locations.
- Close unnecessary applications so detections can be handled cleanly.
- Let Avast quarantine suspicious items, then record the detection name and file path before deciding whether to remove or submit the item.
A manual scan is useful after an exposure, but it is not a substitute for active shields. A clean scan only means that Avast did not identify a threat under the conditions and definitions available at that time.
4. Set sensitivity deliberately
In Core Shield settings, higher sensitivity can increase protection while increasing the likelihood of false positives. Use the default level unless you have a specific reason to change it. If you raise sensitivity during an investigation, review alerts carefully and return to a stable setting after resolving the incident.
5. Review network and browser warnings
Network Inspector can identify suspicious devices or network conditions, while malicious-site blocking and Web Guard address browser-delivered threats. Treat a warning as a reason to stop and verify the destination, not as proof that every file from the site is spyware. Keep the browser, operating system, and extensions updated, and remove extensions you do not recognize.
Common failure modes and fixes
Avast reports a threat, but you are unsure it is spyware
- Read the detection name, location, and action taken.
- Leave the file in Quarantine while you investigate.
- Check whether the file belongs to software you intentionally installed.
- Submit a suspected false positive to Avast Threat Labs rather than restoring it immediately.
- If the alert returns after removal, update Avast and run another full scan.
Higher sensitivity can increase false positives, so an alert alone is not conclusive proof of spyware.
Best Value

- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.

- PERSONAL DATA SCANS – Take your info off the market. We’ll find your personal information on sites selling it, then guide you on how to remove it.
- SOCIAL PRIVACY MANAGER – Decide what you share. McAfee finds the privacy settings buried in your social accounts and fixes them.
The scan is clean, but you still see suspicious activity
- Confirm that Passive Mode is off and all relevant Core Shields are enabled.
- Update Avast and the operating system, then repeat a deep scan.
- Inspect recently installed applications, browser extensions, startup entries, and account sign-ins.
- Change passwords from a separate, trusted device if credentials may have been exposed.
- For a managed work or family device, contact the administrator or a qualified incident-response professional before deleting evidence.
No antivirus scan can prove that a device has never been monitored. A monitoring tool may be authorized, may use legitimate system permissions, or may evade classification.
Protection seems unavailable on another platform
Windows Core Shield behavior does not establish identical coverage on macOS, Android, or iOS. Check the documentation and plan for the specific operating system and region. Do not assume that a setting or feature shown in Windows support pages exists under the same name elsewhere.
The computer becomes slow after changing settings
Higher shield sensitivity and additional scanning can increase alerts and system overhead. Return to the default sensitivity, keep only the required shields enabled, and add exclusions only for files you fully understand. An exclusion removes that location from part of the protection boundary, so it should be narrow and temporary.

How to judge Avast for your situation
Use these questions instead of relying on a single “spyware protection” label:
- Platform and edition: Are you evaluating the same operating system and product edition you actually use?
- Active status: Are real-time shields running, or is the installation in Passive Mode?
- Layer coverage: Are file, behavior, and web protections enabled?
- Response handling: Can you review Quarantine and recover a false positive without immediately deleting evidence?
- Testing relevance: Does the independent test cover your version and platform, and is its scope general malware or spyware specifically?
- Paid controls: Does the feature you need, such as Sensitive Data Shield, require Premium Security in your region?
This framework avoids two opposite mistakes: assuming a marketing feature list guarantees detection of every surveillance tool, and dismissing useful layered protection because no antivirus can provide an absolute guarantee.
Verdict: is Avast adequate protection against spyware?
Avast is a reasonable anti-spyware layer for a Windows computer when its real-time shields are active, the product is current, and alerts are handled carefully. Its documented File Shield, Behavior Shield, Web Guard, Quarantine, and optional Anti-Rootkit and Anti-Exploit controls address the main ways spyware reaches and persists on a system. Avast also explicitly markets scanning, removal, and blocking of spyware.
The limits are equally important. The available independent evidence is a broad Windows malware evaluation, not a spyware-only benchmark; no verified spyware detection percentage is established here. Passive Mode removes active protection, higher sensitivity can create false positives, and legitimate or permission-based monitoring tools may not be classified as malware. Treat Avast as one layer in a security plan, not as proof that a device is free from surveillance.
