Automatic defrost is a controller-managed cycle that removes ice from a commercial refrigerator or freezer’s evaporator. Ice blocks part of the coil’s heat-transfer surface, so the system temporarily changes its refrigerant, heater, drain and fan operation to melt and remove the frost. Once a configured temperature, time limit or external signal says defrost is complete, the controller drains residual water, delays the fans when necessary and returns the equipment to normal cooling.

The method is not universal. Electric heaters, compressor-discharge “hot gas,” off-cycle room air, water and brine are all used in suitable equipment. The installed controller and evaporator design determine when defrost starts, which valves or heaters operate, how the cycle ends and when fans restart.

Why a commercial evaporator needs defrost

During normal refrigeration, warm room air passes over an evaporator that is colder than the air’s dew point. Moisture condenses and freezes on the coil. A thin frost layer can be expected, but continued accumulation insulates the coil and restricts airflow. The refrigerant then receives less heat from the room, while the compressor may run longer to maintain the room setpoint.

Danfoss describes the purpose as restoring “a heat exchanger (evaporator) that is free of ice whereby the transfer of heat from the air in the room to the refrigerant is not hampered by the accretion of ice.” (Danfoss, Refrigeration controllers) Defrost is therefore a heat-transfer maintenance cycle, not simply a way to warm the cabinet.

Defrost frequency, duration and termination temperature are application settings. They vary with room temperature, humidity, door openings, product load, coil design, refrigerant circuit and controller configuration; there is no industry-wide interval that applies to every commercial unit.

What the controller coordinates

A commercial defrost system combines a controller with temperature sensors, evaporator heaters or refrigerant valves, a drain path and fan controls. Controller families such as Danfoss ERC 211/213/214 and EKC 223/224 are documented for commercial applications, while EKE 400 is aimed at industrial and heavy-commercial evaporator control. Their published functions illustrate the type of coordination involved, but they are not interchangeable parts. (ERC 211/213/214; EKC 223/224; EKE 400)

Typical control inputs

  • Evaporator or coil temperature: A sensor can indicate that frost has formed or that the coil has reached a defrost-termination temperature.
  • Room temperature: The controller protects product conditions and can inhibit or postpone a cycle in some strategies.
  • Clock or elapsed operating time: A schedule or accumulated compressor run time can initiate defrost.
  • External command: A supervisory system, digital input or coordinated multi-evaporator sequence can request defrost.
  • Safety and limit signals: High-temperature, pressure, heater or valve status inputs can stop a stage or force a fault response, depending on the equipment.

A typical automatic-defrost cycle

The following sequence describes the logic used by many systems. Individual units can omit stages, add safeguards or use a different order, so the equipment manual is authoritative.

1. Initiation

The controller starts defrost from a schedule, an external command or an adaptive calculation. In the documented ERC 112 adaptive mode, the controller waits a configured minimum interval, monitors evaporator temperature and can initiate defrost when its programmed criteria are met. That is one controller’s algorithm, not a universal standard. (Danfoss ERC 112 user guide)

Some installations coordinate several evaporators. A shared controller or network may prevent normal refrigeration from resuming in one section until participating sections have completed their required stages. (Danfoss AK-CC55 hot-gas sequence FAQ)

2. Preparing the evaporator

Before heat is applied, the controller may stop liquid feed, isolate parts of the circuit or allow refrigerant to leave the evaporator. In a documented Parker Refrigerating Specialties hot-gas sequence, a pump-out stage lets liquid refrigerant leave through the suction line. A configurable soft-gas stage can precede the main hot-gas stage. These steps protect the circuit from sending liquid into a hot section and are specific to the installed valve arrangement. 3. Applying heat

The heat source depends on the selected method:

  • Electric: Resistance elements mounted on or near the evaporator convert electrical power to heat. In the Danfoss AK-RC 251 configuration, refrigeration outputs are stopped while the defrost heaters operate. (Danfoss AK-RC 251 guide)
  • Hot gas: Valves route compressor-discharge gas into the evaporator. The gas condenses while releasing heat to the iced coil, and the resulting liquid is managed by the system’s hot-gas, suction and drain controls. (Danfoss AK-CC55 FAQ; Parker Catalog C12)
  • Off-cycle or air: Refrigeration stops and warmer room air melts frost. Danfoss documents air defrost for suitable positive-temperature rooms; a low-temperature freezer may not have enough available heat for this method. (Danfoss AK-RC 251 guide; Danfoss ERC 112 guide)
  • Water or brine: Some industrial evaporator controllers support these options. Their availability does not by itself specify the plumbing, sanitation controls or operating procedure for a particular installation. (Danfoss EKE 400)

4. Deciding when defrost is complete

A controller can end the heating stage when an evaporator sensor reaches a configured termination temperature. It can also use a maximum elapsed time, an external contact or a combination of conditions. Danfoss documentation describes temperature-based and time-based approaches, while Parker’s hot-gas sequence uses a preset time with the option to terminate earlier from an analog temperature measurement or remote contact. (Danfoss ERC 112 guide; Parker Catalog C12)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maximum-time limit is a safeguard against a failed or misplaced sensor. A termination temperature is not a universal number: the correct value depends on coil construction, sensor location, refrigerant circuit and the manufacturer’s sequence. Copying a setting from another freezer can cause incomplete defrost or excessive product warming.

5. Draining and equalizing

After the visible ice melts, water still remains on the coil, drain pan and tubing. Some hot-gas systems include an equalization stage to let pressures settle before normal refrigeration. A drip-tray heater may keep the drain area clear during or after the cycle. These are optional, system-specific stages rather than requirements for every cabinet. (Parker Catalog C12)

6. Fan delay and return to cooling

Fans often remain off after heaters or hot gas stop. Danfoss describes a configurable delay that allows remaining droplets to freeze on the evaporator or drain away before air movement resumes, reducing the chance of spraying water into the refrigerated space. (Danfoss AK-CC evaporator controller guide) Once the delay, drain and any pressure-equalization requirements are complete, the controller reopens the required refrigeration outputs and restarts the fans. In a coordinated system, all participating sections may have to reach their ready state first.

How the main defrost methods differ

Method Heat source and circuit action Where it fits Important limits
Electric Resistance heaters warm the evaporator; the documented controller sequence stops refrigeration outputs during heating. Common where a reliable dedicated heat source is needed, including low-temperature equipment. Heater wiring, power capacity, safeguards and timing are model-specific. The available documentation does not establish a universal energy or duration advantage.
Hot gas Compressor-discharge gas is routed through controlled valves into the evaporator. Systems designed with the required hot-gas, suction, liquid and drain controls. Valve order, pressure management, pump-out, soft gas, equalization and safety limits vary by installation. It is not a do-it-yourself conversion procedure.
Off-cycle, air or natural Cooling stops and room heat or natural temperature conditions melt frost. Positive-temperature rooms and coils where available ambient heat is sufficient. It may be unsuitable for low-temperature freezers or heavy frost loads.
Water or brine A separate fluid supplies heat to the evaporator. Industrial installations whose controller and mechanical design support the method. Controller support alone does not define the required fluid system, hygiene controls or performance.

Official manuals describe capabilities and sequences for particular products; they do not provide a general ranking for cost, efficiency, cycle length or recovery speed. Those outcomes depend on the complete refrigeration design and operating conditions.

Why fans stop during defrost

Stopping the evaporator fans prevents air from carrying warm, humid air across the cabinet and prevents liquid droplets from being thrown onto stored goods. The delay also gives meltwater time to drain or refreeze on the coil. Fan operation is therefore part of the defrost sequence, not evidence that the compressor has failed. The exact delay and restart condition are controller settings, and some systems keep fans off until every coordinated evaporator is ready.

Recognizing an abnormal defrost cycle

Operators should record the symptom, the controller’s alarm or status indication and the room conditions before changing settings. Common observations point to different checks, but they do not identify a repair without the unit’s wiring diagram and service data.

  • Ice remains on the coil after a completed cycle: Check whether the termination sensor is correctly positioned, the heater or hot-gas valve actually receives its command, the maximum time is long enough for the design and the drain is open. A qualified technician should test electrical output, valve movement and sensor readings.
  • Water appears in the refrigerated space: Verify that the drain path is clear, the drip tray or drain heater is functioning where fitted and the fan delay is not set shorter than the manufacturer’s sequence allows.
  • Products warm during defrost: Confirm that the method, interval and termination limits match the equipment’s application. Do not lower a termination temperature or shorten the cycle solely to protect product without checking whether the coil is still iced.
  • Fans restart with visible droplets: Inspect the fan-delay setting and drain/equalization stages. Repeated spray can indicate a sensor, timer, drain or control-output problem.
  • Defrost never starts: Check the schedule or adaptive prerequisites, external enable signal, active alarms and controller clock. A locked-out safety input can inhibit a commanded cycle.

These checks involve mains voltage, refrigerant pressure and, in hot-gas systems, valves that can expose technicians to high-temperature discharge gas. Electrical testing, refrigerant work and control changes should be performed by personnel qualified for the equipment and local regulations.

Choosing or replacing a defrost controller

A replacement controller is not universal just because it has timed initiation, temperature termination and fan-delay functions. For example, Copeland documents a universal replacement controller with those capabilities, but compatibility still has to be established for the specific installation. (Copeland Universal Replacement Controller)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selecting a controller, record:

  1. The exact evaporator, condensing unit and existing controller model numbers.
  2. Refrigerant type and the system’s pressure and valve arrangement.
  3. Sensor type, resistance or signal range, location and cable length.
  4. Heater voltage, phase, current and required contactor or relay arrangement.
  5. Solenoid, hot-gas, suction, liquid and drain-valve outputs, including their coil voltages.
  6. Whether the installation needs pump-out, soft gas, equalization, drip-tray heating, coordinated multi-evaporator operation or an external defrost command.
  7. Required approvals, enclosure rating, ambient range and communication protocol.

Use the original equipment documentation or a qualified refrigeration technician to verify every item. A controller with a similar display or menu can still be electrically incompatible or unable to reproduce the installed safety sequence.

Practical limits of automatic defrost

Automatic control removes routine manual scheduling, but it cannot correct an undersized evaporator, damaged door gasket, blocked drain, failed fan, refrigerant fault or excessive moisture load. If frost returns unusually quickly, investigate the operating condition as well as the defrost settings. Adaptive control can adjust initiation from measured conditions, but the cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed percentage of energy savings or a fixed recovery time.

For reliable operation, keep the evaporator and drain path accessible for inspection, protect sensors from being moved during cleaning and retain the manufacturer’s parameter record. Any change to termination, maximum time, fan delay or valve sequence should be documented with the reason and the original value so it can be reversed safely.
