Autofocus decides where the camera focuses; auto exposure chooses settings to produce what it judges to be a suitable brightness. They work together when you take a picture, but they solve different problems—and they may not lock at the same moment. Match autofocus to whether your subject moves, then use exposure compensation if the automatic brightness misses your intent.
What autofocus and auto exposure each do
Autofocus sets lens focus
Autofocus estimates the subject’s position or distance and adjusts the lens so that subject appears sharp. A single autofocus operation can work well for a still subject; continuous autofocus can keep adjusting as the subject’s distance changes. The available names and controls vary by camera.
Auto exposure chooses brightness settings
Exposure is the light captured in an image. It depends on aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity. In automatic and program, aperture-priority and shutter-priority modes—often labeled Auto, P, A/Av and S/Tv—the camera selects some or all of these settings. The result is the camera’s estimate, not a guarantee that the brightness will match your creative intent. Sony explains these basics in its Exposure and Exposure Compensation guide.

Choose autofocus by subject movement
| Situation | Useful autofocus behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Subject is stationary | Single autofocus | The camera acquires focus once. Canon calls this One-Shot AF; its manual says that half-pressing the shutter activates autofocus and achieves focus once. |
| Subject is moving or changing distance | Continuous autofocus | The camera keeps adjusting focus while you hold the shutter button halfway. Canon calls this AI Servo AF and describes predictive focusing for a subject steadily approaching or moving away. |
These are examples from Canon’s Instruction Manual, not universal labels. Camera makers may use different names, and tracking options or focus-area controls vary. Check your model’s manual for the corresponding single and continuous settings. If a moving subject is repeatedly out of focus, continuous AF is a sensible starting point; for a still subject, single AF avoids unnecessary refocusing.

Correct automatic brightness with exposure compensation
Exposure compensation shifts the camera’s automatic exposure estimate without requiring you to choose every exposure setting yourself. A positive value asks for a brighter result; a negative value asks for a darker one. Sony describes it as adjusting the exposure the camera judges appropriate to bring it closer to the brightness you want.
- Take a test image in an automatic exposure mode that supports compensation.
- Review the image. If it is too dark, apply a small positive adjustment; if it is too bright, apply a small negative adjustment.
- Take another image and refine the adjustment if needed. The control’s location, scale and availability depend on the camera; consult its manual if you cannot find it.
Compensation changes the automatic result, but which setting the camera changes depends on the exposure mode. In a mode where the camera cannot change a particular setting, its behavior may differ; check the camera’s guide rather than assuming compensation works identically in every mode.

How metering affects exposure
Metering is how a camera samples scene brightness to estimate exposure. The names and behavior differ across models. Nikon’s specifications for the Nikon 1 AW1, for example, list Matrix, Center-weighted and Spot metering. On that model, Spot measures a small circle centered on the selected focus area. That is a model-specific example, not a specification shared by all cameras.

The camera decides how to balance bright and dark areas.
- Center-weighted: Gives more influence to brightness near the center of the frame.
- Spot: Bases its reading on a small area; on the Nikon 1 AW1, that area is centered on the selected focus area.
If a bright window or dark background causes the subject to come out with the wrong brightness, metering choice can affect the estimate. Exposure compensation is another way to correct the result. The exact metering options and their relationship to the focus point should be verified in your camera’s manual. See Nikon Imaging USA’s Nikon 1 AW1 specifications for the cited model example.

Focus and exposure may lock at different times
Do not assume the camera sets focus and exposure together on every model or in every autofocus mode. Canon’s manual says that in its described One-Shot AF and evaluative-metering setup, focus and exposure lock when focus is achieved while the shutter button is held halfway. In its AI Servo description, exposure is set when the picture is taken. Those details are tied to the described camera settings, not a rule for every camera.
Sony likewise notes that exposure adjustment during continuous shooting can depend on the focus mode, the AEL-with-shutter setting and the camera model. Its continuous-shooting exposure guidance was updated July 13, 2026. If a burst changes brightness or a half-press behaves differently than expected, check the manual for your exact model and settings.

A practical starting routine
- Set single autofocus for a stationary subject or continuous autofocus when its distance is changing.
- Choose an automatic exposure mode appropriate to how much control you want, then frame and focus.
- Review the image’s brightness rather than assuming the meter has chosen the look you want.
- Use exposure compensation in the appropriate automatic mode: positive to brighten, negative to darken.
- If focus or brightness changes unexpectedly during a half-press or burst, consult the camera manual for focus-lock, metering and AEL behavior.
