Australian game ratings do not convert one-for-one to ESRB or PEGI labels. Australia uses G, PG, M, MA 15+, and R 18+; G, PG, and M are advisory, while MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted. ESRB categories are age-appropriateness suggestions, and PEGI uses numbered categories. The safest comparison is to check the rating and content advice for the exact release in the country where it will be played.
A rough correspondence published by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) places PEGI 3 near Australian G, PEGI 7 near PG, PEGI 12 near M, PEGI 16 near MA 15+, and PEGI 18 near R 18+. That table is illustrative policy analysis, not an official PEGI conversion rule. It does not make the systems’ legal rules, content thresholds, or parental-control settings identical.

The letters and numbers are not a universal scale. Australian “M” and ESRB “Mature 17+” look similar but perform different jobs: Australian M is a moderate-impact advisory category with no statutory minimum age, whereas ESRB Mature 17+ is a suggested age category. Australia’s legally restricted step is MA 15+, not M.

Each organization evaluates content under its own framework, terminology and legal environment. A label can reflect the intensity, context, realism, duration and interactivity of material, not merely the presence of a particular scene. The same game can therefore receive labels that appear numerically different without either system being “wrong.”

Legal access is the biggest source of confusion. An advisory label tells families what content may be suitable; a restricted label can limit who may buy, rent or access a title under Australian classification rules. ESRB and PEGI categories should not be read as Australian legal permissions, and an Australian label should not be used to infer the law in another country.
Compare the complete package instead of one character on a box:
- the age guidance communicated by the local system;
- whether the category is advisory or legally restricted where the game is obtained;
- the content descriptors or Australian consumer advice;
- separate notices about online interaction, purchases and chance-based mechanics; and
- the exact edition, platform and territory.
How Australian game classifications work
The five Australian categories

Australian Classification describes these impact levels as G “Very mild,” PG “Mild,” M “Moderate,” MA 15+ “Strong” and R 18+ “High.” The Board says context affects the assessed impact: purpose, tone, style, detail, duration, realism and interactivity can all matter. A brief, stylized reference and a sustained, realistic depiction may therefore be treated differently even when they involve the same broad subject.

Australian Classification states that “Classifications for films and computer game consist of a rating and consumer advice.” The symbol alone is not the complete explanation. Consumer advice identifies impactful or frequent elements, which can include themes, violence, coarse language, drug use, nudity and sex.
Games can also carry advice about online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling. These notices answer questions that an age symbol cannot: whether players communicate with strangers, whether money can be spent inside the game, and whether a paid mechanic involves chance.

For a particular title, search its entry in the Australian Classification National Classification Database. Check the exact platform or release where entries differ, and read every advice line before deciding whether the game suits a child.
Australian treatment of chance and gambling mechanics
Australian rules make a distinction between ordinary purchases and purchases linked to chance. Paid in-game purchases with an element of chance, such as loot boxes, receive a minimum Australian classification of M. That does not mean every in-game purchase automatically triggers M; the stated threshold is the combination of payment and chance.

Simulated gambling receives a minimum classification of R 18+. The distinction matters when comparing an Australian release with an overseas label that may show a purchase or gambling-related descriptor without imposing the same legal access consequence.
How ESRB ratings work

ESRB says, “Rating Categories suggest age appropriateness.” That wording is important: the category is guidance, not an Australian-style statement that a person below the number is legally barred from access. “Mature 17+” is also not the same legal concept as Australian MA 15+.
Content descriptors explain the trigger
ESRB content descriptors identify material that may have contributed to a rating or that parents may want to know about. Depending on the game, descriptors can address violence, language, sexual content, drugs, gambling or other themes. A category without its descriptors leaves out the reason the rating was assigned.

Interactive elements are separate notices
ESRB interactive elements can flag features such as user interaction, online communication, in-game purchases or purchases involving random items. ESRB explains that these notices do not affect the rating assignment. They are disclosure tools, so a game can have an interactive-element notice without moving into a different age category.
The International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) administers a streamlined process for many digital games and mobile apps. That helps explain why a digital storefront may display a rating generated through a different submission path than a conventional boxed-game review. Always read the rating shown for the actual storefront and region.
How PEGI ratings work
PEGI’s numbered categories

PEGI labels should be read with the content descriptors attached to the specific release. A number indicates the system’s age guidance; it does not establish that the game has the same access rules as an Australian category with a similar-looking number.
Why PEGI 16 is not automatically Australian MA 15+
The two labels can occupy a similar position in a rough comparison, but they are created under different standards. PEGI 16 is a PEGI age-guidance category. Australian MA 15+ is a legally restricted Australian classification. A retailer, platform or parent must follow the rules that apply in the country where the game is supplied, not the rule implied by an overseas number.

Use this only as a rough orientation. The ALRC table is a policy comparison, not a current PEGI-issued conversion rule or a promise that two labels have identical content thresholds. It also cannot convert legal access: Australian M remains advisory even though the table places it beside PEGI 12, while MA 15+ remains legally restricted even though PEGI 16 is an age-guidance label.
The table is most useful when a parent encounters an overseas listing and needs a starting point for further checking. The next step is always the local classification database or storefront entry for the exact title.
What does Australian M correspond to?
There is no single official ESRB or PEGI equivalent for Australian M. The ALRC’s indicative table places Australian M near PEGI 12. ESRB’s nearest-looking label by letter is Mature 17+, but that is not a valid direct match: ESRB “M” is shorthand for “Mature 17+,” while Australian M means moderate impact and carries no legal minimum age.
To assess an Australian M game, read its consumer advice and consider the child’s age, sensitivity and ability to understand the context. Do not infer that a game is legally restricted simply because its Australian symbol is M.
What does Australian MA 15+ correspond to?
The ALRC comparison places MA 15+ near PEGI 16. That is a broad category relationship, not an exact conversion. MA 15+ is legally restricted in Australia, so retailers and platforms must apply Australian access rules even if an imported copy displays PEGI 16 or an ESRB category.

For an ESRB comparison, look at the full rating and descriptors rather than searching for a single letter. ESRB Mature 17+ communicates a higher suggested age than Australian MA 15+, but neither label can substitute for the local legal classification.
How to compare a specific game correctly
- Identify the exact release. Confirm the title, edition, platform, digital or physical format and country storefront. A sequel, remaster, cut version or regional release may carry different advice.
- Record the local age category. For Australia, use the title’s National Classification Database entry. For an ESRB or PEGI release, read the label shown by the relevant regional storefront or package.
- Read every descriptor. Note violence, themes, language, drugs, nudity, sex and any other content explanation instead of relying on the symbol alone.
- Check interaction and spending notices. Look for online communication, user interaction, in-game purchases, random-item purchases and gambling-related advice. Keep Australian chance-based purchase and simulated-gambling rules separate from ordinary spending notices.
- Apply the local access rule. Treat Australian MA 15+ and R 18+ as restricted categories. Treat Australian G, PG and M as advisory categories, then use parental judgment and device controls.
- Set the device controls. Console, computer and mobile operating systems can add age, purchase, communication and spending limits. These controls supplement classification; they do not replace checking the rating.
Common comparison mistakes
“The letters match, so the ratings match”
Australian M and ESRB Mature 17+ are the classic false match. One is an Australian moderate-impact advisory category; the other is an ESRB suggested-age category. Compare the complete labels and descriptors.
“A number is a legal minimum everywhere”
PEGI numbers communicate PEGI guidance. In Australia, only MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted among the five standard game categories. Australian M is not a legal minimum age of 15.

“Any in-game purchase means an M rating”
The Australian minimum-M rule described here concerns paid purchases with an element of chance. A purchase notice by itself is not proof that the Australian classification must be M.
“The overseas box tells me what applies in Australia”
An imported package can show another system’s label. Use the Australian database entry and Australian consumer advice for the release being supplied locally.
“The age symbol tells me whether strangers can contact my child”
Online interactivity and user-interaction notices provide information that an age category may not. Review those notices and configure communication controls separately.
A practical checklist for parents and carers
- Search the exact game in the Australian Classification National Classification Database.
- Read the consumer advice, not only the G, PG, M, MA 15+ or R 18+ symbol.
- Decide whether the category is advisory or legally restricted.
- Check for violence, themes, language, drug use, nudity and sex.
- Look for online interactivity, user communication and purchase notices.
- Pay particular attention to chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.
- Verify the platform, edition and territory before relying on a rating seen elsewhere.
- Use the console or device’s parental controls for age access, purchases, spending and communication.
Bottom line on Australian, ESRB and PEGI labels
Australian G, PG and M are advisory; MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted. ESRB categories suggest age appropriateness and add content descriptors plus separate interactive-element notices. PEGI uses 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18 guidance labels. The ALRC’s PEGI-to-Australia table is useful only as an indicative comparison, not as an official conversion.
When a child is deciding whether to play a game, check the local rating and its detailed advice for the exact release, then apply parental controls. That approach avoids the two most damaging errors: treating Australian M as a legal 15-plus restriction and treating a foreign label as if it automatically carried Australian legal meaning.
