ATP Masters 1000 tournaments use three singles main-draw formats under the 2026 rulebook: 96 players outdoors, 56 outdoors, or 48 indoors. The champion earns 1,000 PIF ATP Ranking points in all three formats, but the number of entry places and some lower-round points depend on the draw size. Results at eight Masters 1000 tournaments are mandatory components of the ranking calculation, subject to detailed entry and replacement rules.

What makes a tournament a Masters 1000?

Masters 1000 is an ATP Tour tournament category. The “1000” refers to the ranking points awarded to the singles champion, not to a draw of 1,000 players or a guarantee that every participant receives the same number of points. A player’s points depend on how far they advance, the draw format, and—in the case of a qualifier—whether they also earned qualifying points.

The 2026 ATP rules describe three singles main-draw sizes. Two are outdoor formats and one is indoor. The competition rules and the PIF ATP Rankings rules are separate parts of the ATP Tour’s 2026 Rulebook: Chapter 7 sets out competition and draw provisions, while Chapter 9 contains ranking-point and ranking-period provisions. The relevant editions are dated March 31, 2026; the ranking-period provisions cited here are from the December 2025 edition of Chapter 9.

How large are the singles draws, and who gets in?

A draw is the set of players placed into the tournament’s singles main draw. The draw size determines how many places are allocated to direct acceptances, qualifiers, wild cards, and special exempts. These are different routes into the same main draw; they do not create separate tournaments or different winner-point totals.

Main-draw format Conditions Direct acceptances Qualifiers Wild cards Special exempts
96 players Outdoor 78–79 12 5 0–1
56 players Outdoor 44–45 7 4 0–1
48 players Indoor 38–39 6 3 0–1

These allocations are the 2026 rulebook’s stated structures, not a claim that every tournament uses the same draw size. For example, a 96-player outdoor event has 12 qualifying places and five wild cards, while a 48-player indoor event has six qualifying places and three wild cards. The direct-acceptance and special-exempt counts can vary within the ranges shown.

Direct acceptances

Direct acceptances are players admitted to the main draw through the tournament’s acceptance process rather than by winning a qualifying place or receiving a wild card. The rulebook gives a range rather than one fixed number for each format because the draw also accounts for the possible special-exempt place. It is safest to use the allocation for the particular format rather than assume that every Masters event has the same number of direct entries.

Qualifiers

Qualifiers reach the main draw through qualifying competition. The number of qualifying places is fixed by the format in the 2026 table: 12 for a 96-player draw, seven for a 56-player draw, and six for a 48-player draw. A player’s qualifying result can affect ranking points separately from the points earned after entering the main draw; the point rules are explained below.

Wild cards and special exempts

A wild card is a designated main-draw place, with the number allocated depending on the format: five in a 96-player draw, four in a 56-player draw, and three in a 48-player draw. A special exempt is a possible additional place in each format, not a guaranteed place at every event: the rulebook’s allocation is zero or one. The allocation table establishes the number of places, but does not by itself explain the individual selection decision for a particular tournament.

How many ranking points does each round earn?

The champion receives 1,000 ranking points in both the 96-player format and the combined 48/56-player format. The higher-round awards are the same across those formats; differences appear in the lower-round values. The table shows the points associated with the result or exit round. “R” means round, and the draw format determines which lower-round rows apply.

Result or round reached 96-player draw 48/56-player draw
Champion 1,000 1,000
Runner-up 650 650
Semifinalist 400 400
Quarterfinalist 200 200
Round of 16 100 100
R32 50 50
R64 30 10
R128 10

The blank lower-round cells mean that the 2026 points table does not list that round for that format; they are not a claim that a player in some other situation receives no points. The clearest format-specific difference is at R64: the listed award is 30 points in a 96-player draw and 10 in a 48/56-player draw. Only the 96-player table lists an R128 award, at 10 points.

In practical terms, reaching the round of 16 earns 100 points regardless of which of these draw formats is used. A semifinalist earns 400 and a finalist who loses the final earns 650. The 1,000-point winner award is the same whether the event is played in a 96-player outdoor draw, a 56-player outdoor draw, or a 48-player indoor draw.

How qualifying points work

Qualifying points are added to the points a player earns in the main draw. They are not a replacement for the main-draw award. The 2026 table distinguishes between qualifying for a 48/56-player event and qualifying for a 96-player event, and it also distinguishes winning through qualifying from losing in the final qualifying round.

WILSON US Open Tennis Balls - Extra Duty, Single Can (3 Balls)
  • Approved by USTA and ITF for competitive play
  • Official Ball of the US Open
  • Made with premium woven felt
  • Extra Duty: Ideal performance on hard, abrasive courts
  • Can includes 3 balls
Qualifying result 48/56-player event 96-player event
Qualifies for the main draw 30 points 20 points
Loses in the last qualifying round 16 points 10 points
Loses in the first qualifying round 0 points 0 points

For a concrete example, a player who qualifies for a 96-player event and then reaches the round of 16 earns the applicable 20 qualifying points plus the 100 points for that main-draw result: 120 points in total from those listed awards. A player who qualifies for a 48/56-player event and reaches the same main-draw stage earns 30 plus 100, or 130 points. Those examples apply the table’s listed points; they do not make assumptions about other ranking adjustments or a player’s full ranking calculation.

A player who loses in the last qualifying round receives 16 points at a 48/56-player event, but the rulebook specifies 10 points where the main draw is larger than 56. A first-round qualifying loss earns zero in either case. The 2026 table therefore treats qualification outcome and main-draw size as relevant, rather than assigning one universal qualifying bonus to every Masters event.

How Masters results enter the ATP ranking calculation

Points awarded at a tournament and the points included in a player’s ranking calculation are related but not identical ideas. The tournament table determines the points attached to an event result. The ranking rules determine which results are included in the relevant ranking period and how mandatory events are treated.

Under the 2026 PIF ATP Rankings rules, eight ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournaments are mandatory components of the ranking calculation for both commitment and non-commitment players. They sit alongside Grand Slam results and other categories specified by the rules. This means a player cannot treat every Masters result as simply an optional extra when considering which tournament results count toward the ranking.

Acceptance can matter even if a player does not play

The rules provide that once a player is accepted into a mandatory event in the ways specified by the ranking rules, that event’s result may count even if the player does not participate. The details of how acceptance applies are governed by the rules; this should not be generalized into a claim that every absence at every event is treated identically. In particular, “mandatory” concerns the ranking calculation and its detailed entry provisions, not a guarantee that a player will physically compete.

Limited replacement of mandatory results

The 2026 rules also allow eligible players to replace up to three mandatory Masters singles results or zero pointers with a better later score from an ATP 500 or ATP 250 tournament. The provision has conditions, including participation and the absence of a ranking penalty at the Masters event being replaced. It is therefore a limited substitution mechanism, not a general option to discard any disappointing Masters result in favor of any better score.

The practical distinction is important: a Masters tournament can award points according to its round-by-round table, yet the ranking rules determine whether and how that result enters a player’s ranking calculation. Replacement eligibility is also conditional. Players or readers assessing a particular player’s ranking should consult the applicable rule text and that player’s circumstances rather than infer the result from the tournament points table alone.

Ranking points are not the same as bonus-pool compensation

ATP rules also use points in a separate compensation mechanism. The 2026 ATP Circuit Regulations state that 30% of the fixed bonus pool for Masters 1000 tournaments and the ATP Finals is distributed using a value-per-point system based on points earned at those events. That allocation is distinct from the ranking points a tournament awards for winning or advancing through matches.

In other words, the 1,000 points listed for a Masters champion are ranking points; they should not be read as a cash amount or as a share of the bonus pool. The value-per-point mechanism is a separate allocation rule, and the 30% figure describes the share allocated through that mechanism—not the tournament’s ranking-point scale.

What to compare when looking at two Masters events

“Masters 1000” identifies the category, but it does not mean every event has an identical singles structure. To compare the mechanics of two events, check the draw format first, then use the matching entry and points provisions.

  • Draw size and conditions: Determine whether the singles main draw is 96 outdoors, 56 outdoors, or 48 indoors.
  • Entry allocation: Compare the direct-acceptance range and the number of qualifier, wild-card, and possible special-exempt places for that format.
  • Points at the player’s exit round: The winner-through-round-of-16 awards match across formats, while lower-round values differ, including the R64 award.
  • Qualifying result: If the player came through qualifying, add the qualifying points applicable to the event’s draw size and qualifying outcome.
  • Ranking treatment: Check whether the event is among the season’s mandatory ranking events and whether any specific replacement provision applies to the player.

These checks answer different questions. Draw size explains how many players and entry routes are provided; the points table explains the event award; ranking-period rules explain how the result is treated in a player’s ranking calculation. Keeping those layers separate prevents a common misunderstanding: that a Masters event’s 1,000-point label means all its draws, entry paths, and ranking consequences are identical.
