Astronomers use Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) to study different parts of a star-forming region. Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible observations reveal young stars, illuminated gas, cloud structure and shock waves; its near-infrared observations can capture some light escaping from dusty areas. Webb’s near- and mid-infrared observations reveal more of the embedded stars and dust. By comparing images and spectra from both observatories, astronomers build a more complete picture than either wavelength range can provide alone.

Why do astronomers use both Webb and Hubble?

A star-forming region is not a single kind of object. It contains dense clouds of gas and dust, newly forming stars, young stars that have begun affecting their surroundings, and material heated or illuminated by those stars. Different parts of the region emit, absorb, scatter or block different wavelengths of light. An observation in one band therefore highlights some structures while hiding or deemphasizing others.

Hubble and Webb are space telescopes, but they are not interchangeable views of the same scene. Hubble observes ultraviolet, visible and some near-infrared light. Its observations can show young stars shining in ultraviolet, visible cloud structure, ionized gas illuminated by young stars, and shock waves associated with jets. Webb is optimized for near- and mid-infrared observations, which are useful for examining young stars still embedded in dusty surroundings and the dust itself. NASA describes Webb as a way to probe deeply into star-forming regions and study conditions that lead to new stellar systems in its Science with Webb overview.

The result is a layered interpretation: Hubble helps show where young stars affect surrounding gas and how visible structures are arranged, while Webb can reveal sources and dusty material less apparent in visible light. The telescopes complement one another; neither image is a complete inventory of everything happening in a stellar nursery.

How does dust change what each telescope can see?

Dust grains in a cloud can absorb or scatter visible light. If a protostar is buried inside a dense dusty region, much of its visible light may not reach us. Infrared light, especially at longer wavelengths, is generally less hindered by dust, so some embedded sources and structures can become easier to observe in infrared images. NASA explains this difference in its Infrared Astronomy explainer.

“Less hindered” does not mean “unobstructed.” Infrared light does not pass through every cloud without limitation, and an infrared image is not a literal view through all material. Dense matter can still block or affect light; the wavelength observed and the properties of the material both matter. Webb’s advantage is that infrared observations can reveal regions that visible light shows poorly, not that dust ceases to matter.

Dust is also part of the subject, not just an obstacle. It can hide young stars in one band while emitting or affecting light in infrared bands. Comparing the views helps astronomers distinguish an area that appears dark in visible light because it is obscured from one that is simply faint in that band. The observations need to be interpreted together rather than treating a dark patch in one image as empty space.

What does each telescope reveal in a star-forming region?

Observatory and wavelength emphasis What the observations can reveal What the view does not establish by itself
Hubble: ultraviolet and visible, with some near-infrared capability Young stars, illuminated and ionized gas, visible cloud structure, and shock waves associated with jets. Near-infrared observations can capture some light escaping from embedded regions. A visible image alone cannot show every star hidden behind dust or describe all of the material inside a cloud.
Webb: near- and mid-infrared More of the embedded young stars and dusty structures; mid-infrared observations help study dust and cooler material. An infrared image does not mean the entire cloud has become transparent, nor does image appearance alone prove a particular star-formation process.

The comparison reflects the observing capabilities described in NASA’s Hubble overview of star birth and its Webb Star Lifecycle explainer. The same region can look strikingly different between bands because different material and processes dominate the light in each one.

How do Webb and Hubble work together in practice?

A useful way to understand a multiwavelength study is to follow the questions an astronomer is trying to answer. The telescope and observing mode are chosen to fit the question; there is no single image or instrument setting that answers every question about a nursery.

  1. Map the visible scene. Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible observations can locate young stars and show illuminated gas, cloud boundaries and structures associated with energetic activity such as jets. This provides a view of the parts of the region visible at those wavelengths.
  2. Look for obscured sources and dusty material. Webb’s near-infrared imaging can reveal more structure and young stars in dusty regions. Mid-infrared observations can emphasize dust and cooler material, adding a different view rather than simply making the visible image sharper.
  3. Compare corresponding areas. Astronomers examine how structures align or differ across bands. A feature visible in one band but subdued in another can point to different contributions from stars, gas or dust; the contrast is evidence to interpret, not an automatic explanation of cause.
  4. Choose spectroscopy when the question requires more than shape. If researchers need to investigate the properties of material, they can disperse light into a spectrum. The resulting wavelength information can be used to investigate composition, temperature and motion, depending on the observation and instrument mode.
  5. Interpret the combined evidence. Images show where structures appear and how they are distributed; spectra add information about the light at different wavelengths. Astronomers use the two forms of evidence to develop a physical interpretation while accounting for what each observation can and cannot see.

This is why an image comparison should not be reduced to “Webb sees more.” Webb may reveal embedded stars or dusty structures that are hard to see in a visible image, while Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible coverage provides information about stars and illuminated gas that infrared imagery alone does not replace.

What can the Pillars of Creation comparison show?

NASA’s comparison of the Pillars of Creation is a clear example of wavelength changing the view. In Hubble’s visible-light image, dust blocks parts of the pillars. In Webb’s near-infrared NIRCam view, more structure and embedded stars are visible. Webb’s mid-infrared view emphasizes dusty material. The images are not competing attempts to produce one definitive picture: each makes different features prominent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The comparison also illustrates why colors in published astronomical images need care. A displayed color can represent a filter or wavelength band, particularly when observations include infrared light outside the range human eyes can see. Unless an image’s source explicitly says otherwise, its colors should not be described as the colors a person would see by looking at the region. Color mapping is a way to encode observational data so that differences between bands and features can be inspected.

Even a dramatic image does not by itself settle how a particular star formed or what will happen next. It gives astronomers a map of observed light. To draw conclusions about causes and physical conditions, they consider the wavelength coverage, spectra where available, and the limits of the observation.

What do astronomers learn from spectra?

An image records how light is distributed across a field of view in selected bands. A spectrum separates light by wavelength, letting researchers study how its intensity varies across those wavelengths. This adds clues about material properties that cannot be read reliably from visual appearance alone. NASA describes Webb’s instrument suite and specialized observing modes in its Webb’s Scientific Instruments guide.

For star-forming regions, spectroscopy can help investigate composition, temperature and motion in parts of a nebula. Those are broad categories of questions, not a claim that every spectrum measures every property or that a particular chemical detection follows from an image. The specific result depends on the target, instrument, observing mode and analysis. A careful account of an individual detection or measured value requires the specific observation or scientific paper behind it.

Webb has several instruments and observing modes. NIRCam provides near-infrared imaging; MIRI observes mid-infrared light and offers camera and spectrograph capability; NIRSpec and NIRISS provide additional near-infrared spectroscopy modes. Choosing among them depends on the question: mapping a structure calls for imaging, while investigating wavelength-dependent properties calls for a suitable spectroscopic observation. These modes extend the analysis; they do not turn an image into a direct, self-explanatory record of a star’s history.

What do “near-infrared” and “mid-infrared” mean?

NASA’s Webb FAQ gives broad wavelength bands that help orient readers. These ranges describe general regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, not performance limits for a specific instrument:

Band Approximate wavelength range Context
Near-infrared 0.7–5 micrometers Broad band as given in NASA’s FAQ; not an instrument specification.
Mid-infrared 5–30 micrometers Broad band as given in NASA’s FAQ; not an instrument specification.
Far-infrared 30–1,000 micrometers Broad band as given in NASA’s FAQ; not an instrument specification.

NASA says Webb is sensitive to near- and mid-infrared radiation. The bands help explain why Webb can study light that visible observations do not capture, but they should not be used as substitutes for instrument documentation when a precise observing range or capability is needed. The figures and their general-band context come from NASA’s Webb FAQs.

How can young stars change their surroundings?

Newly formed stars do not merely sit inside a cloud. Their ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds can affect nearby gas and dust, disrupting or eroding parts of the surrounding cloud. In some situations, that activity can compress gas and contribute to conditions that trigger further star formation. The direction and outcome depend on the circumstances in the region; it is not accurate to treat every bright rim, cavity or pillar as proof of one universal mechanism.

Using multiple wavelengths helps astronomers examine this interaction from more than one angle. Hubble can show illuminated gas and visible structures shaped by young stars, while infrared observations can reveal more of the dust and embedded sources. NASA discusses the influence of massive stars and possible triggering in its Webb’s Star Formation Discoveries explainer. A particular image, however, should not be said to prove that radiation or winds triggered a specific new star without evidence tied to that observation.

How should you read a Webb–Hubble image comparison?

  • Check which bands are shown. A visible-light view and an infrared composite encode different parts of the spectrum, so their colors and apparent structures are not directly equivalent.
  • Ask what material each band emphasizes. A feature may stand out because it emits, reflects, absorbs or blocks light differently at that wavelength.
  • Separate observation from interpretation. The image documents light received through selected filters. Claims about temperature, composition, motion or a formation mechanism may require spectra or other analysis.
  • Keep the dust limitation in view. Infrared observations can reveal more through dusty regions than visible observations, but no single band guarantees an unobstructed view.
  • Look for the instrument and image description. The filter mapping and processing explain what displayed colors represent. Without that information, do not assume they depict natural visual color.

The most reliable mental model is that Hubble and Webb provide complementary evidence. Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible observations help trace young stars and their effects on gas; Webb’s infrared observations expose more of the embedded and dusty environment. Images establish structure and contrast, while spectra can add clues to the physical properties of the observed material.
