Astronomers do not take an external photograph of the Milky Way by looking through another galaxy. Instead, they use the light from a distant quasar or galaxy as a backlight. As that light travels toward Earth, it passes through gas in the Milky Way’s halo, intergalactic space, or another foreground system. Atoms and ions in the gas remove specific wavelengths from the source spectrum. Those missing wavelengths reveal the foreground gas’s composition, temperature, ionization, density and motion.
One sightline is only a narrow pencil through space, not a complete map. By observing many background sources, matching absorbers to foreground galaxies and combining ultraviolet, optical, X-ray and emission data, astronomers build an increasingly constrained picture of the Milky Way’s circumgalactic medium (CGM): the diffuse, extended gas surrounding the visible disk.
The key idea: use a distant object as a backlight
A quasar can be billions of light-years away and still appear as a compact point of light. Its extreme brightness makes it useful for spectroscopy. As NASA team member Camilla Pacifici put it, “A quasar is the perfect object in the distant universe, because it’s luminous enough that we can see it very well.” A normal distant galaxy can also provide a suitable background, particularly when its light is bright enough for a high-quality spectrum.
The target is usually not the quasar or galaxy itself. The target is material between that source and the telescope. If a cloud of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, silicon or another element lies along the line of sight, the cloud absorbs photons at wavelengths set by the energy levels of its atoms and ions. A spectrograph spreads the incoming light into a spectrum, where the otherwise smooth source continuum contains narrow or broad absorption features.

Each feature has two kinds of information. Its wavelength identifies the transition and, after accounting for redshift, indicates where the absorbing material is located along the line of sight. Its depth and shape indicate how much material may be present, although interpretation depends on instrumental sensitivity, line saturation and physical models. Detecting several ions together gives a stronger constraint on the gas than detecting one line alone.
What an absorption spectrum can reveal
| Observable | What astronomers infer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength shift | Relative motion and redshift of the absorbing material | A shift alone does not prove that the gas belongs to the Milky Way; unrelated foreground or intergalactic systems can produce absorption. |
| Which ions absorb | Ionization state and clues to temperature and radiation environment | Conclusions require models that account for the source of ionizing radiation and gas density. |
| Line strength and profile | Column density and velocity structure along the sightline | Weak or saturated lines and limited resolution can restrict precision. |
| Several transitions from one element | A more reliable estimate of the amount of that element | Instrument sensitivity determines which transitions are detectable. |
| Different elements together | Metallicity, chemical enrichment and multiphase structure | The result describes gas projected along a selected path, not every part of the halo. |
The National Academies’ astronomy survey for the 2020s identifies absorption spectroscopy as a way to constrain circumgalactic and intergalactic density, ionization, metallicity and velocity fields. In practical terms, the spectrum is a set of measurements along one line, and the physical picture comes from interpreting those measurements with models and with observations at other wavelengths.
How the observation is carried out
- Choose a bright background source. Astronomers select a quasar or galaxy whose light passes through, or close to, the halo being investigated. Brightness matters because the absorption features can be small compared with the source’s total light.
- Obtain a spectrum. A telescope and spectrograph record intensity as a function of wavelength. The useful wavelength range depends on the instrument and on which ions are expected in the gas.
- Identify absorption lines. Scientists compare the observed features with known atomic transitions. The measured wavelength, line strength and profile are used to estimate the absorber’s redshift, column density and velocity components.
- Test the physical interpretation. The set of detected ions is compared with ionization and thermal models. This constrains whether the gas is relatively cool, warm or hot, how strongly it is ionized and how enriched it is with elements heavier than helium.
- Associate the absorber with a foreground system. Astronomers search for galaxies near the sightline and measure their distances or redshifts. An absorber is more plausibly connected to a particular galaxy when its velocity, projected position and environment are consistent with that galaxy’s halo.
- Combine sightlines and other observations. Repeating the process for many background sources samples different impact parameters and directions. Ultraviolet, optical, X-ray and emission measurements are then compared to constrain the larger halo.
NASA’s work on missing matter illustrates the association step. Researchers used ultraviolet detections of warm gas, identified galaxies at the corresponding distances and then searched for X-ray absorption from hotter material. The galaxy positions helped determine which foreground systems could plausibly contain the absorbing gas.

Using quasars to probe the Milky Way’s halo
A quasar seen through the Milky Way’s halo provides a pencil-beam measurement of gas between the quasar and Earth. The foreground gas may be far above or below the Galactic disk, where it is too diffuse and faint to detect directly in visible light. Ultraviolet or X-ray absorption can reveal that material even when its own emission is undetectable.
The spectrum does not automatically label every line as Milky Way halo gas. Some absorption can arise in the intergalactic medium, in a satellite galaxy, in a more distant foreground galaxy or in gas associated with the quasar’s own environment. Distances, redshifts, sky positions and the pattern of several ions are therefore essential for assigning an absorber to the correct structure.
A single sightline also cannot establish the halo’s total mass, outer boundary or three-dimensional shape. It samples only the gas projected in one direction. A collection of sightlines at different angular positions and distances from the Galactic center can reveal trends, such as whether an ion is more common near the disk or farther out, but the inferred structure still depends on the number and spacing of available background sources.

What Andromeda can tell us about the Milky Way
Because we live inside the Milky Way, we cannot observe its halo from an external vantage point. Astronomers therefore study comparable galaxies from outside, especially Andromeda (M31), and use the comparison to test models of our own Galaxy.

NASA reported that Hubble observations of quasars behind Andromeda were used to study M31’s dark gas halo. The reported halo extends about one million light-years from Andromeda and has a mass about half that of the galaxy’s stars. NASA also described that estimate as roughly six times larger in extent and about a thousand times more massive than earlier estimates. These figures apply to Andromeda’s halo, not to a direct measurement of the Milky Way’s total CGM mass.
| Statement | What it means for the Milky Way |
|---|---|
| Andromeda’s halo reaches about one million light-years | It demonstrates that a galaxy’s gaseous environment can extend vastly beyond its bright stellar disk; it is not a measured Milky Way radius. |
| Andromeda’s halo contains about half the mass of its stars | It shows that diffuse halo gas can represent a major baryonic reservoir; it is not the Milky Way’s measured CGM mass. |
| The Milky Way and Andromeda may have overlapping halos | This is an inference from their likely sizes and separation, not an external image of the Milky Way. |
| Project AMIGA gives approximately 104–105.5 K for the likely Milky Way CGM | This temperature range is a comparison-based inference using Andromeda observations and models, not a single direct thermometer reading for the entire halo. |
The Project AMIGA study reported that the Milky Way likely has a CGM as extended as Andromeda’s and with temperatures spanning approximately 104 to 105.5 kelvin. The wording matters: the result is an inference by comparison. It should not be presented as a direct, complete measurement of the Milky Way’s halo.

Why astronomers use more than one wavelength
No single band detects every phase of circumgalactic gas. Different temperatures and ionization states produce different useful signatures, and each technique has its own sensitivity and resolution.
| Approach | Typical information | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultraviolet absorption | Cooler and warm ions, including transitions from highly ionized atoms | Detects diffuse gas along bright background sightlines that may have little direct emission | Requires a sufficiently bright ultraviolet source and suitable instrument access; samples only the line of sight |
| X-ray absorption | Hotter gas and highly ionized elements | Probes phases that ultraviolet observations cannot see | Absorption lines are difficult to measure and demand high-quality spectra |
| Optical emission | Gas that is dense or excited enough to emit detectable light | Can show where emitting structures are located on the sky | Very diffuse halo gas may be too faint to detect directly |
| Galaxy positions and redshifts | Candidate host galaxies and their distances | Provides the environmental context needed to assign an absorber | Nearby projected galaxies can be unrelated unless their distances and velocities agree |
The National Academies survey emphasizes a multiscale, multiwavelength strategy. In practice, ultraviolet lines can identify a warm component, X-ray searches can test for hotter material, and galaxy surveys establish which systems lie at the absorber’s distance. Agreement among these independent clues is more informative than any one detection.

Sampling different impact parameters
A background source close to a galaxy’s apparent disk probes a different region from one far away on the sky. By comparing absorption strength and ionization at different projected distances, astronomers can test whether the halo becomes thinner, hotter or more highly ionized outward from the galaxy.

Comparing directions
Gas may not be distributed symmetrically. Outflows, inflows, satellite galaxies and interactions can create preferred directions or clumps. Sightlines above and below a disk, or along different azimuths, help reveal such variation. Sparse coverage means that apparent gaps can reflect missing observations rather than empty space.
Combining absorption with emission
Absorption measures the amount of material intercepted by a narrow beam. Emission depends on how much gas is present and how strongly it radiates across an extended region. Combining the two helps break some degeneracies, but neither technique alone supplies a complete three-dimensional map.
Using statistical samples
Many background quasars and galaxies allow astronomers to estimate how often absorbers occur and how their properties correlate with foreground galaxy mass, star-formation activity and environment. Statistical trends can describe a population even when the exact distance or shape of an individual cloud remains uncertain.
Important limits and common misunderstandings
- It is not a photograph. The method records spectral fingerprints in background light, not a visible picture of the Milky Way’s halo.
- The source is not the target. The quasar or galaxy supplies photons; the intervening gas creates the absorption feature being analyzed.
- One line of sight is not a map. A detection establishes conditions along one projected path and cannot by itself determine global geometry or total mass.
- Association requires evidence. A foreground galaxy must have a compatible distance or redshift and a plausible position relative to the sightline. Projection on the sky alone is insufficient.
- Different phases can be missed. Ultraviolet, X-ray and emission observations are sensitive to different temperature and ionization ranges.
- Numbers carry scope. The one-million-light-year extent and half-the-stellar-mass figure are reported for Andromeda. The approximately 104–105.5 K Milky Way range is a comparison-based inference. A definitive current total mass and complete three-dimensional distribution for the Milky Way CGM are not established by these observations alone.
What this method has established
Distant galaxies and quasars let astronomers detect otherwise invisible gas because that gas leaves identifiable absorption lines in their light. Spectroscopy can constrain the gas’s elements, ionization, density, metallicity and velocity, while galaxy distances and positions help connect each absorber to a physical system. Observations of Andromeda show how large and massive a galaxy halo can be and provide a valuable comparison for the Milky Way. The resulting picture is powerful but assembled from selected sightlines and multiple techniques, not from a single external view of our Galaxy.
