Astronomers map the sky in ultraviolet (UV) light with space-based telescopes, because Earth’s atmosphere absorbs much of the UV radiation arriving from space. A survey takes exposures through defined wavelength filters, calibrates and aligns them, then combines overlapping observations into images or mosaics. The resulting maps can reveal hot, young stars and star-forming regions that are less prominent in visible-light views. No single UV map covers everything at the same depth or resolution: each survey balances area, sensitivity, sharpness and wavelength coverage.
Why ultraviolet maps come from space
Ultraviolet light has wavelengths shorter than visible light, but much of it does not reach the ground because Earth’s atmosphere absorbs it. To observe those wavelengths, astronomers use instruments aboard spacecraft. The observation is therefore not simply a photograph taken with a different color setting: the telescope and detector must be sensitive to the selected UV wavelengths, and the resulting data must be processed into an image that can be interpreted and compared with other observations.
UV observations are useful because the light highlights hot, young stars and active star-forming regions. Older, cooler stellar populations can be more prominent in visible-light images, so a UV map can bring a different part of a galaxy’s story into view. That contrast does not mean a UV image shows every young star or provides a complete account of star formation on its own. It is one wavelength-dependent view, shaped by the instrument’s filters, exposure and coverage.
How a UV survey becomes a map
A survey is built from exposures taken through one or more filters. Each filter selects a wavelength interval, so two images of the same field can record different portions of the UV signal. A telescope’s field of view limits how much sky a single pointing covers. Broad maps therefore require many pointings, while deeper observations of a smaller area generally use more observing time on that area.

- Choose the wavelength bands and fields. Survey teams decide which filters to use and whether to observe a broad region, particular targets, or both. The choice determines what wavelengths the images represent and how much sky the survey can cover.
- Record exposures. The detector collects observations of each field. A small field of view means a large mosaic may require hundreds of snapshots rather than one exposure.
- Calibrate the measurements. Processing accounts for detector response and exposure so that measured signals can be interpreted consistently. The quality and status of that calibration depend on the data product; not every observing mode has equally mature calibration support.
- Locate and align the fields. Astronomers identify stars or use reference catalogs to establish positions, then align overlapping observations. Overlaps help assemble the fields into a coherent mosaic rather than a set of unrelated frames.
- Publish images and source measurements. Combined exposures can become a mosaic. Individual detected objects can also be organized in a source catalog. Some instruments use a grism—a dispersing element that spreads incoming light—to provide low-resolution spectral information in addition to direct images.
The public products can thus include more than a picture: depending on the survey, users may find individual exposures, mosaics, catalogs or grism data. Those products answer different questions. An image helps show spatial structure; a catalog makes it easier to work with measured sources across a large field; grism data provide spectral information at low resolution. Their availability and calibration should be checked for the specific dataset before drawing conclusions.
What determines a map’s area, depth and sharpness?
“A UV map” can mean an all-sky survey, a deep image of a limited field, or detailed observations of selected galaxies. These products are not interchangeable. Sky coverage tells you how much area was observed; depth indicates how faint a source the observations can reach; angular resolution affects how well nearby sources can be distinguished. Wavelength coverage tells you which part of the UV signal was measured. A survey can be strong on one axis and limited on another.

| GALEX survey tiers | Nested coverage ranges from all-sky imaging to ultra-deep imaging over a smaller area. | NASA Open Data Portal describes FUV at 1350–1750 Å and NUV at 1750–2800 Å. A GALEX technical survey chapter instead gives FUV at 1350–1780 Å and NUV at 1770–2730 Å; the source-specific band edges differ. | NASA Open Data Portal reports an all-sky limiting depth of about AB magnitude 20–21 and ultra-deep imaging to about magnitude 26 over 4 square degrees. | Images and survey data are accessible through MAST’s MultiMission Archive. MAST flags calibration limitations for scan-mode products. |
| Swift UVOT Small Magellanic Cloud mosaic | A wide mosaic of the Small Magellanic Cloud assembled from 656 snapshots. | UVOT has a 17-by-17-arcminute field of view. Its sensitivity spans 170–650 nm, including visible wavelengths, so it is an ultraviolet/optical instrument rather than a UV-only camera. | NASA reports 1.8 days of total exposure and 2.5-arcsecond angular resolution at full size for this mosaic. | The 57-megapixel mosaic contains about 250,000 ultraviolet sources, according to NASA’s 2013 account. |
| Swift UVOT serendipitous source catalog | Catalog compiled from the instrument’s first five years of observations. | Built from 23,059 Swift datasets; catalog summary is from NASA Swift Mission Operations Center. | Not stated in the catalog summary as a single map-wide depth or resolution value (NASA Swift Mission Operations Center). | Reports 6,200,016 unique sources, with more than 2 million observed multiple times. This is a historical catalog result, not a live current source count. |
| Hubble LEGUS | Observations of selected nearby star-forming galaxies, rather than a broad all-sky survey. | Not stated as a single survey-wide band range in NASA’s LEGUS account (NASA Science). | Not stated as a comparable survey-wide depth or resolution value in NASA’s LEGUS account (NASA Science). | Provides sharper views of selected targets and studies young stellar populations; it is a different kind of program from a broad survey. |
These figures illustrate why survey labels matter. GALEX’s broad-to-deep tiers make a direct coverage-versus-depth trade-off. Swift UVOT’s compact 17-by-17-arcminute field explains why a large sky mosaic needs many pointings. Hubble’s LEGUS program focuses on selected nearby galaxies, so its value is not measured by whether it covers the whole sky.
What ultraviolet images reveal
UV maps make hot, young stars and active star-forming regions stand out. NASA’s account of Swift’s Magellanic Cloud mosaics describes dense clusters of hot, young stars and explains that viewing each galaxy in one broad image supports studies of star birth and evolution across the system. The images fill a gap that visible-light maps do not necessarily show as clearly: the UV-emitting young population can be viewed across a wide area rather than only in a narrow set of individual targets.

That is also why a UV map can complement, rather than replace, visible-light observations. A visible image may emphasize older, cooler stars, while a UV image emphasizes hotter stars and regions associated with recent star formation. Comparing wavelength-specific products helps researchers distinguish populations and spatial patterns that a single image could blur together. Hubble’s LEGUS survey likewise targets star-forming galaxies and young stellar populations; NASA notes that earlier GALEX catalogs helped lay groundwork for that study.
Images do not by themselves establish every detail of how a star formed or evolved. Catalog measurements and, where available, grism spectra provide additional kinds of evidence. The map is best understood as a carefully calibrated measurement of selected wavelengths across a stated area, not as a complete inventory of everything in a galaxy.

How to choose and reuse a public UV dataset
Start with the scientific or practical question, then choose the product whose coverage and data type fit it. Someone looking for broad sky context may need an all-sky product; someone studying faint sources in a small region may value a deeper tier; a project about the structure of a particular galaxy may benefit from a targeted mosaic or sharper observations.

Confirm which area is actually observed and whether it is continuous, a set of separate targets, or a mosaic. Do not assume that a survey’s name means uniform all-sky coverage.
- Check the filters. Identify the exact bands associated with the image. Published GALEX band edges vary between NASA’s Open Data Portal dataset description and the technical survey chapter, so cite the particular definition used rather than treating one set of cutoffs as universal.
- Check depth and exposure context. A quoted limiting magnitude applies to the stated survey tier or product, not every image from the mission. For example, GALEX’s reported all-sky depth and ultra-deep depth describe substantially different coverage regimes.
- Check resolution and intended use. Resolution figures are specific to a product and viewing scale. NASA’s 2.5-arcsecond figure applies to the Swift UVOT Small Magellanic Cloud mosaic at full size, not to every UV map.
- Check the product and calibration notes. Determine whether you are downloading an exposure, mosaic, catalog or grism product, and read its documentation. MAST says GALEX scan-mode products were created when calibration support was limited and the pipeline was not optimized for those data.
MAST identifies its MultiMission Archive as the access point for GALEX data and describes itself as the only NASA-sanctioned site distributing those data. Swift also releases data products publicly after processing. Public access does not guarantee that all products are equally calibrated or that every part of a survey has uniform exposure. A user reusing data should preserve the product’s own documentation and calibration qualifications alongside any measurements.

What large mosaics and catalogs make possible
A mosaic turns a sequence of small telescope pointings into a view large enough to study a galaxy or region as a connected scene. NASA’s Swift UVOT Small Magellanic Cloud example combines 656 snapshots into a 57-megapixel image, with about 250,000 ultraviolet sources. NASA reports 1.8 days of total exposure and 2.5-arcsecond angular resolution at full size for that mosaic. Those numbers describe this particular product, not a universal Swift survey specification.
Catalogs serve a complementary purpose. The Swift UVOT serendipitous catalog summary reports 6,200,016 unique sources in 23,059 datasets from the instrument’s first five years, with more than 2 million sources observed multiple times. Repeated observations can support comparisons across visits, but the quoted total is a historical result tied to that catalog’s time span; it should not be presented as the current number of sources in all UVOT data.
For any project, the practical distinction is whether you need an overview, measurements of many objects, or spectral information. A mosaic can reveal spatial arrangement; a catalog organizes source records; grism observations add low-resolution spectral data. A given survey may provide only some of these, and the documentation determines how confidently the products can be combined or compared.

Astronomers map ultraviolet light by observing from space, selecting wavelength filters, calibrating exposures and aligning fields into images or mosaics. The maps help expose hot, young stellar populations and star-forming regions that can be less conspicuous in visible light. But “UV map” does not mean one standardized, uniformly deep picture of the entire sky: the footprint, sensitivity, angular resolution, wavelength bands and calibration status all depend on the survey and product. Reading those qualifications is part of using the map correctly.
