Astronomers find galaxies by turning calibrated telescope images into catalogs: software detects significant light, measures its position and shape, separates blended sources, and assigns classifications. A catalog entry is a candidate—not automatic proof that the source is a galaxy. The thresholds, measurements, and quality checks depend on the survey and its data release.

What does it mean to “find” a galaxy in survey data?

A telescope survey does not usually identify galaxies by inspecting every image one at a time. Its processing pipeline converts exposures into calibrated images and catalogs, where each detected source has measurements such as position, brightness, and apparent shape. Researchers use those measurements and quality indicators to select objects for a particular analysis.

Three terms help clarify the process:

  • Detection means that image pixels contain a sufficiently significant signal. It does not establish what produced that signal.
  • Measurement describes the recorded properties of the detected light, such as flux, centroid, size, and shape.
  • Classification estimates what kind of source the measurements resemble—for example, a galaxy or a star. Its reliability depends on image quality, brightness, and the classifier used.

Rubin Observatory’s Data Preview 2 (DP2) documentation defines detection as finding image regions with above-threshold flux and one or more peaks. Its documented detection threshold is signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. That is a setting in this particular processing, not a universal rule for finding galaxies in every survey. How survey images become catalogs

1. Calibrate the images

Raw telescope exposures contain instrumental effects and are not yet ready for consistent measurement. Survey processing corrects for or accounts for those effects and applies calibration. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) describes producing calibrated FITS images and catalogs from raw imaging data. Its imaging workflow also resolves repeated observations so that one observation is designated primary; otherwise, the same astronomical object could be counted more than once. Calibration and catalog contents are tied to a survey’s processing and release. SDSS’s imaging pipeline history is not the same as its current SDSS-V pipelines: SDSS says the imaging pipeline used in SDSS-I/II was completed by DR8, later received astrometric and photometric-calibration corrections, and was included through DR18. Its DR20 software page describes a different pipeline landscape, including SDSS-V coverage. SDSS DR20: Software Pipelines

2. Detect significant regions of light

Detection software looks for image regions whose flux stands out from the noise according to a chosen criterion. In Rubin DP2, the documented threshold is signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. A detection can be a galaxy, a star, a noise-related feature, or another source; crossing the threshold means the signal was detected under that processing rule, not that its identity is confirmed.

Rubin DP2 distinguishes a source, detected in a processed visit image, from an object, measured in a deep coadded image. A visit image represents an individual observation, while a coadd combines observations to make a deeper image. The terms therefore describe different catalog contexts rather than interchangeable labels. Rubin Observatory Science Pipelines: Source detection and measurement — DP2

3. Separate overlapping or close sources

Two galaxies can overlap in the image, or a galaxy can lie close to another source. If several peaks fall within one detected footprint, deblending software can treat the original footprint as a parent and assign the peaks to separate child detections. Rubin’s documented DP2 processing uses Scarlet Lite for this task and includes deblended children in its catalog.

A child’s measured flux can be below the nominal detection threshold even though the parent footprint exceeded it. This is why a catalog entry should not be interpreted by applying the detection threshold to each child in isolation: the parent region may have triggered detection, after which deblending divided its light among components. The result is a best-effort separation from overlapping pixel data, not a guarantee that every division perfectly matches the true objects. Rubin Observatory Science Pipelines: Source detection and measurement — DP2

4. Measure brightness, position, and shape

After detection, pipelines measure properties including a source’s centroid, size, shape, and flux. Rubin DP2 deep-coadd object measurements include point-spread-function (PSF) and extended-shape information as well as multiple flux estimators. The PSF describes how the telescope and observing conditions spread the light of a point-like source across the image; it matters because even a star does not appear as a perfectly sharp point.

Some catalog measurements are made at a fixed coordinate even in a band where no above-threshold region was detected. Rubin calls this forced photometry. Measuring different bands at a consistent location can support multiband analysis, but a forced measurement does not independently confirm that a source exists or that it is a galaxy. 5. Classify candidates and check quality

Stars are generally unresolved or nearly point-like at survey resolution, while galaxies often show extended light. Classification methods can compare measured size and shape with the PSF and combine information from multiple wavelength bands. These are clues, not infallible labels: distance, faintness, image quality, blending, and the survey’s classifier all affect how clearly a source can be distinguished.

Rubin DP2 documents a specific limitation: its griz_model_extendedness classifier tends to label everything as a galaxy for objects fainter than approximately i = 24. Adjusting a threshold may help, but selecting faint stars optimally requires user input. The documentation also says that the documented processing lacks a classification for bad or bogus detections. Users should therefore treat classifications and flags as inputs to selection, not as a substitute for checking whether the data suit their purpose. Rubin Observatory Science Pipelines: Source detection and measurement — DP2

6. Query the catalog for a science question

Once a survey publishes its catalogs, researchers can select objects by position, measured properties, and quality criteria rather than starting from every image. SDSS makes most catalog data available through its Catalog Archive Server (CAS), although the images themselves are not available there in the same way. Its documentation recommends constructing queries carefully when selecting objects or parameters. The Dark Energy Survey (DES) DR2 offers web query, image-visualization, cutout, and notebook interfaces, providing several ways to inspect or work with catalog results. SDSS DR17: The Imaging Pipeline Dark Energy Survey Collaboration: The Dark Energy Survey Data Release 2

How do astronomers tell galaxies from stars?

At a basic level, astronomers ask whether the light is consistent with a point source blurred by the PSF or is measurably more extended. They may combine this shape information with brightness and measurements in several bands. A catalog’s star-or-galaxy label is an estimate based on those inputs; it is not a universal, definitive distinction.

The practical boundary becomes less reliable for faint or crowded sources. Rubin DP2’s extendedness caveat around i = 24 is an example specific to that classifier and processing, not a general brightness limit for all surveys. A threshold tuned for one science task can also be a poor fit for another. A researcher prioritizing a clean sample of bright galaxies may make a different selection from one trying to retain faint candidates, where more stars can be misclassified.

Survey design also affects classification. The available filters, depth, seeing, PSF variation, and calibration shape what can be measured and compared. The LSST Galaxies Science Roadmap discusses the importance of multiband data and varying PSFs for morphology work, and the potential role of simulations or human-classified training sets. These are methodological considerations rather than a promise that any one classifier will work equally well on every dataset. LSST Galaxies Science Collaboration: Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Galaxies Science Roadmap

What happens when two galaxies overlap?

The image records combined light in shared pixels, so the pipeline first detects a footprint and then looks for multiple peaks within it. Deblending assigns peaks to separate children while retaining the parent footprint as a record of the larger blended region. This allows a catalog to represent several candidates where a simple detection might otherwise produce one entry.

Deblending is an interpretation of image structure. If sources are very close, faint, or have irregular shapes, their light can be difficult to allocate cleanly. A child can also have a measured flux below the ordinary detection threshold because its parent passed that threshold. When analyzing blended objects, inspect the survey’s deblending behavior and relevant quality information instead of assuming every catalog child was independently detected above threshold.

DES DR2 measure Reported value How to interpret it
Distinct astronomical objects detected About 691 million DES DR2 release figure reported by the Dark Energy Survey Collaboration in 2021.
Benchmark galaxy and star samples 543 million galaxies and 145 million stars Samples after basic quality selection in the 2021 release paper; these are not a universal census or classification guarantee.
Sky coverage Approximately 5,000 square degrees DES DR2 footprint.
Broad bands grizY Five optical/near-infrared survey bands used for the reported release.
Median coadded catalog depth g = 24.7, r = 24.4, i = 23.8, z = 23.1, Y = 21.7 magnitudes For a 1.95-arcsecond aperture at signal-to-noise ratio 10; not a single universal limiting magnitude for all measurements or surveys.

All values in the table are from the Dark Energy Survey Collaboration’s 2021 DR2 paper. A survey’s quoted depth depends on its release, measurement definition, aperture, and signal-to-noise condition, so compare like with like. The Dark Energy Survey Data Release 2

How to choose and use a survey catalog

For a research or learning project, choose a catalog based on the science question and the release documentation—not simply the largest object count. Check the following before treating a sample as a set of galaxies:

  • Footprint and filters: Does the survey cover the sky region and wavelength bands your question requires?
  • Depth and image quality: What depth is reported, under what aperture and signal-to-noise definition? What are the seeing and PSF conditions relevant to your measurements?
  • Processing and release: Which pipeline and release produced the catalog? Are duplicate observations handled, and have calibration changes been applied?
  • Detection and deblending: What threshold is used, how are overlapping peaks handled, and can child detections have fluxes below the initial threshold?
  • Classification and flags: What classifier and quality criteria are available? Are known faint-source or bad-detection limitations relevant to your selection?
  • Access route: Can you query the catalog, view image cutouts, or use notebooks? These options can make targeted analysis easier than downloading an entire survey.

The LSST Science Pipelines documentation describes a software stack developed for Rubin’s LSST and notes that its command-line and Python interfaces can be extended to optical or near-infrared datasets. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every detection a galaxy: Detection establishes significant image signal under a processing rule; classification and quality checks address what the signal may represent.
  • Applying one survey’s threshold everywhere: Rubin DP2’s S/N greater than 5 threshold is documented for that processing, not a general astronomy standard.
  • Assuming a deblended child passed the initial threshold by itself: A parent footprint can pass while an individual child’s measured flux is lower.
  • Treating star/galaxy labels as certain at every brightness: Classifier performance can degrade for faint sources, as Rubin DP2 documents near i = 24 for its extendedness classifier.
  • Comparing catalog counts without release context: Coverage, filters, depth, pipeline, and quality selection affect the reported totals.
  • Confusing historical and current pipeline names: SDSS’s older imaging pipeline and SDSS-V pipeline coverage belong to different processing contexts; verify the named release.
