Astronomers find fast radio bursts (FRBs) by searching radio-survey data for brief pulses whose arrival time changes with frequency. A software trigger marks a candidate, not a confirmed burst. Follow-up checks help establish whether the signal is astrophysical; interferometric observations can then refine its position enough to connect it with a host galaxy. Dispersion measure helps characterize the material along the signal’s path, but it is not a sky coordinate.
What astronomers are looking for
A fast radio burst is a short-lived radio transient. It can appear as a brief increase in radio intensity in data recorded across time and frequency. As the signal travels through ionized material, its lower-frequency components arrive later than its higher-frequency components. The resulting frequency-dependent delay is called dispersion.
That sweep gives search software a pattern to test for. If a pulse is dispersed, the arrival-time difference across the observing band can be compensated by shifting the data at different frequencies relative to one another. When the shifts match the pulse’s dispersion, its energy can add up into a sharper peak instead of being spread across time.

- Detection: A search pipeline finds a signal that meets its trigger criteria.
- Candidate verification: Astronomers assess whether the signal is consistent with an astrophysical burst rather than interference or an instrumental effect.
- Localization: Observations determine the burst’s position on the sky precisely enough for further study, potentially including identification of its host galaxy.
These steps answer different questions. A candidate can be detected without being verified, and a verified burst can still have a position too uncertain to identify one galaxy.
How a survey turns radio data into candidates
Record data across time and frequency
A radio survey records measurements over time and across a range of radio frequencies. Its observing design determines how much sky it can watch, how sensitive it is to brief signals, and how finely it samples time and frequency. There is no single observing band or pipeline shared by every FRB search.
CHIME/FRB is a documented example. Its catalog paper describes a transit survey that watches the northern sky as it passes through the instrument’s field of view. The reported observing band for the system described in that paper is 400–800 MHz. Those are characteristics of the cited CHIME survey and catalog era, not universal requirements for detecting FRBs. The catalog paper also gives the pipeline details that make the search sequence concrete: CHIME/FRB Collaboration, “The First CHIME/FRB Fast Radio Burst Catalog” (2021).

Radio-frequency interference (RFI)—signals from human activity or instrumental effects—can resemble a transient. Search software therefore tries to identify and remove or reject interference before treating peaks as possible bursts. It then tests trial dispersion measures (DMs), which correspond to different amounts of frequency-dependent delay. For each trial, software compensates for the delay and searches for a concentrated pulse.

In the CHIME/FRB implementation, the data are beamformed and up-channelized before interference cleaning and the search stages. The catalog paper describes the L1 stage as using “a highly optimized tree-style dedispersion, spectral-weighting, and peak-search algorithm.” In plain terms, the system tests dispersion delays efficiently, weights frequency channels, and searches the resulting data for peaks. That quotation describes CHIME/FRB’s implementation; other observatories may use different systems.
Group triggers and assess them further
A single signal may produce detections in more than one beam or search output. Later pipeline stages combine detections across beams, identify likely unique events, reject additional interference, check for known sources, and assess whether a candidate’s DM is consistent with a possible origin beyond the Milky Way. Candidate data can also be buffered for offline review.
This sequence reduces the number of signals astronomers need to examine closely, but a pipeline trigger remains a candidate. The search software has recognized a pattern worth investigating; it has not, by that action alone, proved that a distant astrophysical source produced it.

How astronomers verify a candidate
Verification uses the signal’s properties and the circumstances of the detection. Astronomers consider whether the frequency sweep and pulse shape fit expectations for a dispersed transient, whether the event is consistent across the observing data, and whether interference or a known source could explain it. Observations from another instrument or at another time can also add evidence, when available.

The FRB verification literature describes several useful diagnostics: a broad-band signal, dispersion in excess of the expected Galactic contribution along the line of sight, a frequency-squared dispersion relation, a narrow pulse, and possible scattering. These are observational clues, not a rigid checklist that every event must satisfy in exactly the same way. The data quality, observing setup, and available follow-up differ from event to event. Interference can be especially deceptive because it may be brief and strong, just like a pulse of interest. A convincing candidate therefore needs more than a large peak in one data stream: its behavior across frequency, time, beams, and any follow-up observations matters. Confidence comes from the combined evidence, rather than from one diagnostic treated as a universal pass-or-fail rule.
What dispersion measure tells astronomers—and what it cannot
DM is an integrated electron column
Dispersion measure is an observable that tracks the integrated column of free electrons between the source and the observer. It quantifies the accumulated dispersive effect along the line of sight; it is not a direct measurement of the burst’s coordinates. In the CHIME/FRB catalog analysis, the estimated Milky Way contribution is considered using Galactic electron-density models including NE2001 and YMW16.

An excess can support an extragalactic interpretation
If the measured DM is greater than the modeled Milky Way contribution expected in that direction, the excess can support the interpretation that the signal has traveled through plasma beyond our Galaxy. The comparison depends on the Galactic model, and the total DM can include contributions from intervening material and the host galaxy. It should not be converted into an exact distance without stating the assumptions used.

Most importantly, DM does not tell astronomers which galaxy emitted the burst or exactly where in that galaxy it occurred. It describes a property of the path, not a two-dimensional position in the sky. Localized-host studies illustrate why independent positional information is needed to connect an FRB with a particular galaxy, as in Chatterjee et al., “A direct localization of a fast radio burst and its host” (2017) and Ravi et al., “A fast radio burst localized to a massive galaxy” (2019).

A wide-field survey is designed to monitor a substantial part of the sky and find transient events. Its initial position estimate is generally tied to which beam or beams detected the event. That beam-based position can be useful for follow-up, but its uncertainty may cover more sky than a single galaxy occupies. A detection position and a precise localization are therefore different products.
Interferometry improves positional information by comparing signals received at separated antennas. The separation between antennas forms a baseline; combining the measurements lets astronomers estimate the source’s direction more precisely than a survey-beam position alone. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) extends the baselines across large distances and can provide much finer angular resolution. Some observing strategies preserve high-time-resolution voltage data or trigger additional stations when a burst is detected, so the signals can later be correlated. The details depend on the array and the event, and not every FRB has data suitable for a VLBI-quality localization.

The approaches complement rather than replace one another. A survey can discover an event because it watches broadly; a follow-up array can then spend observing and data-processing effort on a particular burst to constrain its position. A precise coordinate makes it possible to search for an optical counterpart or host environment, but the radio localization itself does not establish the burst’s physical origin.

From a precise position to a host-galaxy environment
Once a radio burst is localized accurately, astronomers can compare its position with optical images and conduct follow-up observations such as spectroscopy. That can establish whether the position lies within a galaxy and help characterize the surroundings. It is a further inference built on the improved position, not something that a high DM alone supplies.
FRB 20210603A provides a concrete example. In a 2024 demonstration, CHIME and purpose-built outrigger stations used VLBI to localize the burst at detection. The reported final error ellipse was 0.2″ × 2″, within the disk of the edge-on galaxy SDSS J004105.82+211331.9. Resolved optical spectroscopy showed recent star formation near the burst position. The ellipse is the reported result for this event, not a typical precision guaranteed for all FRBs. Details are in Cassanelli et al., “A fast radio burst localized at detection to an edge-on galaxy using very-long-baseline interferometry” (2024).
The sequence matters: the radio signal was detected, the event was localized with an interferometric array, and optical follow-up characterized the nearby environment. A host association becomes possible because the positional uncertainty is sufficiently small to compare against galaxy observations; it does not follow merely from the burst’s dispersion measure.
What FRB counts and localization figures mean
Catalog totals are tied to a survey, observation period, and publication date. For example, the 2021 CHIME/FRB Collaboration catalog covers detections from 2018 July 25 through 2019 July 1. It reports 536 FRBs, including 62 bursts from 18 previously reported repeating sources. Those numbers describe that historical catalog sample, not the current total number of known FRBs.
Likewise, a localization figure describes a specific event and method. The 0.2″ × 2″ error ellipse reported for FRB 20210603A demonstrates what the CHIME-outrigger VLBI setup achieved in that case. It should not be read as the default survey-beam accuracy, a universal VLBI result, or the precision available for every detected burst.
What the detection process does not settle
Detecting and locating an FRB establish observational facts about its signal and position; they do not by themselves settle the physical mechanism that produced it. The source mechanism remains an active research question. Similarly, a precise location can support investigation of the host environment, but the evidence in this article does not make one event’s environment a universal explanation for all FRBs.
